Abstract: A system for heating the air in the room containing a fireplace includes a heat exchanger mounted at the top portion of the combustion chamber of the fireplace to extend across the chimney flue opening and a fan for circulating room air through the heat exchanger in heat exchange relationship with the combustion gases passing from the combustion chamber in a vortex flow through a heat exchange passage in the heat exchanger to the chimney flue opening. There are preferably provided a pair of the heat exchangers mounted in side-by-side relationship to conform with the rectangular shape of the plain view of the fireplace.

Abstract: A portable drinking water filtration apparatus for filtering and purifying water comprises a housing, a chamber formed inside the housing having an inlet opening, a first outlet opening, and a second outlet opening, filtration media positioned inside the chamber between the chamber inlet opening and the chamber outlet openings, and a pump mounted on the housing for forcing water through the filtration media, the second chamber outlet opening being in contact with the first chamber outlet opening for venting air as water is forced through the filtration media and discharged from the first chamber outlet opening and for discharging water from the chamber when the first chamber outlet opening is plugged. A plurality of bottle connection members are formed on the housing adjacent to the first chamber outlet opening for connecting the housing to a variety of different sized bottles.

Abstract: The present invention pertains to the use of a refractory ceramic brick based on MgO containing 3% to 23% of a pre-synthesized MgO.times.Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 (MA spinel) with an Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 content of 75 to 95 wt. % for lining cement rotary kilns.

Abstract: The present invention pertains to a refractory brick based on at least one refractory metal oxide in a particle fraction of <8 mm containing 4 to 30 wt. % of a very fine refractory fraction, prepared by firing below a temperature at which the particles of the very fine refractory fraction sinter by recrystallization with grain growth.

Abstract: Combinations of materials in composite form, which are thermoadhesive to themselves by treatment at temperatures not exceeding 90.degree. C. and which can be shaped in the form of a laminate at said temperature, are characterized in that they comprise an open mesh textile substrate first impregnated or coated with a first rubber-like elastoviscous constituent having a softening point not exceeding 90.degree. C. and further coated with a second, semi crystalline constituent essentially of polyester type having a fusion temperature from 35.degree. to 80.degree. C. These combinations have controlled adhesiveness and adequate fluidity for easy application by hand, particularly in do-it-yourself applications, orthopedics, sport and physiotherapy.

Abstract: An apparatus and a method are disclosed for measuring the concentration of fibrinogen that contributes to the clotting of blood. The apparatus utilizes a potentiophotometer that provides an output which is directly indicative of the fibrinogen concentration in the blood sample. The present invention takes into account the prothrombin time which is defined as the time between the injection of a reagent into a sample of the blood being measured and the time of the clotting or coagulation. The present invention relies on the knowledge that a specified minimum amount of fibrinogen needs to be present in the blood sample in order to detect the forming of a clot. After the detection of the specified minimum amount, the invention then relies on monitors for the fibrinogen concentration to decrease to a value which is less than the specified minimum amount.

Abstract: A golf training aid for putting comprises a sheet of stiff material made in the form of a five-pointed star with a body portion, a forward point portion extending forwardly from the body portion with an aiming and digging flange at the forward end of the forward point portion, which extends at right angles to the body portion for aiming along a line to the target, two side point portions extending sideways away from the body portion and having forward edges which terminate in side points, two rear point portions extending rearwardly from the body portion which terminate in rear points, and a forward stub connected to the flange by a bend line. The digger flange is wide enough to prevent movement of the star when the flange is inserted into the ground.

Abstract: A deck double plug assembly for plugging first inboard and second outboard deck holes in the deck of converted railroad autorack cars comprises a first plug connected to a second plug base assembly by a connector portion. The second outboard plug assembly is clamped to the deck to cover and plug the second outboard deck hole, whereby the deck plug assembly may be installed by one person. The method of installation from the top surface of the deck includes the steps of loosely assembling the second outboard plug assembly, holding the second deck plug assembly and pushing the first plug downwardly through the second outboard deck hole, inserting the first inboard plug into the first deck hole from underneath the deck, and clamping the second plug assembly to the deck surrounding the second deck hole.

Abstract: An easily-assembled, heat resistant connector for releasably joining end portions of three capillary tubes for use in chromatography without interrupting flow or interfering with chromatographic results comprises a main body, and a glass insert which has first, second and third hollow legs that are connected together at a central portion, and a connector that connects each leg of the glass insert to a capillary tube. Each leg of the glass insert extends outwardly from the central portion towards an open end portion, and each leg has an inboard bore with a taper that receives and end portion of one of the capillary tubes. The taper is wider near the open end portion of the leg and narrower near the central portion. The connectors are mounted on the main body and a sealing ferrule is provided in each connector for making a seal between the capillary tubes and the legs of the glass insert.

Abstract: An orthopedic pillow for helping to correct and helping to prevent hyperkyphosis and rigidity of the thoracic spine and for returning the normal lordotic cervical curve comprises a base panel having a first end portion, a second end portion, a left top surface segment extending between the first end portion and the second end portion, and a right top surface segment extending between the first end portion and the second end portion, a first crown for supporting the thoracic spine, the first crown being formed on the first end portion of the base panel, extending toward the second end portion of the base panel, and dividing at least partially the left top surface segment from the right top surface segment, and a transition ramp formed in the first end portion of the first crown for supporting the spine just under and below the shoulder blades of a reclining person.

Abstract: A tee divider and method for dividing a tee area of a golf driving range into subsections and for blocking golf balls errantly hit by a first golfer from hitting a second golfer practicing next to the first golfer, comprises a frame having an upper end portion and a lower end portion, mounting feet mounted on the lower end portion of the frame for securing the tee divider on the tee area and for supporting the tee divider in an upright position substantially perpendicular to the plane of the tee area, a deflector sheet extending between the upper end portion of the frame and the lower end portion of the frame for blocking golf balls hit by a first golfer from hitting a second golfer practicing next to the first golfer on the opposite side of the tee divider, and a fastening rope for attaching the deflector sheet to the frame.

Abstract: The setting device for tubular bone fractures (3,4) consists of a longitudinally extended flattened setting element (20) and of bone screws (10), which in each case are connected to one other by means of a screw (11) and a cone (16) in addition to a taper segment section (15). The setting element (20) has an essentially rectangular cross-section of tissue-compatible high-density material, in particular of implant steel. In each of the two end sections (21) of the setting element (20), at least two bores are provided, which extend through the opposite wide sides thereof. The bone screws (10) are guided through these bores. The setting element (20) consists integrally of the two relatively rigid end pieces (21) and a connection piece (31) lying therebetween. This connection piece (31) is in comparison with the end sections (21) elastic as its cross-section is smaller than that of the end sections (21).

Abstract: A method of coating substrates such as pharmaceutical tablets, food and confectionery forms, agricultural seeds and the like, with a protective film comprises the steps of mixing a cellulosic polymer, maltodextrin, and a plasticizer into water to form an aqueous coating suspension, spraying an effective amount of said coating suspension onto said substrates to form a film coating on said substrates, and drying the film coating on said substrates. Optionally, a detackifier, a secondary film former, a flow aid, and/or a colorant may be dispersed into the coating suspension before applying the coating suspension to the substrates. A dry powder edible film coating composition for use in pharmaceuticals, food and confectionery forms, agricultural seeds, and the like, comprises a dry mixture of a cellulosic polymer, maltodextrin, and a plasticizer. Optionally, the dry coating composition may include a detackifier, a secondary film former, a flow aid, and/or a colorant.

Abstract: A wear liner for use in a railroad freight car between a truck bolster bowl and a car body center plate comprises a non-metallic wear liner bowl which has a horizontal bottom floor, and an upstanding circumferential side wall extending upwardly from the periphery of the bottom floor to a top flange which forms an upper rim. A sealing member extends outwardly from the upper rim and has an upper lip which extends outwardly and upwardly to contact a base shoulder of the center plate. The sealing member also has a lower lip that extends outwardly and downwardly to contact a top shoulder of the truck bolster bowl. The floor and circumferential side wall of the wear liner are made of a harder synthetic resin plastic material than the synthetic resin plastic material of which the softer sealing member is made. The composite sealing member lips are outboard of the side wall of the car body center plate and the truck bolster bowl so as to be out of the way when the center plate is being lowered into the truck bowl.
