  • Patent number: 5984014
Abstract: A pressure responsive well tool is provided of the general type including a housing having a flow conducting passage therethrough, a pressure conducting channel formed in the housing, and a spring assembly in the housing for storing potential energy in response to an increase in fluid pressure within the pressure conducting channel and releasing the stored potential energy into the pressure conducting channel in response to a decrease in fluid pressure within the pressure conducting channel. A staged latching assembly is operatively connected to the spring assembly for providing at least one intermediate stage pressure position for the spring assembly. The staged latching assembly preferably includes interfering structures on a mandrel and a collet for providing the intermediate stage pressure position. The intermediate stage pressure position of the spring assembly can be used as a stage for selectively directing the spring assembly in either direction, thereby providing better control over the tool.

  • Patent number: 5957209
Abstract: A tool connector is provided for downhole use in oil and gas fields. The tool connector includes a stinger and a stinger receptacle. The stinger is adapted to be stabbed into the stinger receptacle. A loaded engaging member movable between a running position before the stinger is stabbed into the stinger receptacle and a latched position when the stinger is stabbed into the stinger receptacle to latch the stinger and the stinger receptacle together. A release member retains the loaded engaging member in the running position. When the stinger is stabbed into the stinger receptacle and a set force is applied to the stinger and stinger receptacle, the release member releases the loaded engaging member to move to the latched position and latch the stinger and the stinger receptacle together. According to a second aspect of the invention, the tool connector is releasable, further including a releasable stop member to stop the engaging member in the latched position.

  • Patent number: 5954135
Abstract: A subterranean well assembly and method of installation which uses a selectively rupturable flow control device to initially block flow and after rupture to allow flow therethrough. The selectively rupturable device is eccentric, in that, it withstands higher pressures without rupture in a flow direction which ruptures when lower pressures are applied to the device in the opposite direction. The rupturable device is installed in a subterranean well in the flow path between the production tubing string and casing.

  • Patent number: 5850879
Abstract: Disclosed is a method of communicating data and control signals between a down hole well tool and surface equipment wherein variations in the tension of the line supporting the tool from a reference tension value established with the well tool in place for operation are imposed at one location on the support line and detected at another location on said support line said variations in tension being coded in frequency, magnitude, polarity or duration or combinations thereof to convey the data and control signals between the two locations.

  • Patent number: 5794699
Abstract: Assemblies and methods are provided for selectively opening and closing a side port in a flow conductor for a well. In general, the sliding side door assembly includes a housing and a door subassembly. The housing has a generally tubular shape defining a fluid conducting interior and central axis. A side port is formed in the housing, and a ball seat is positioned in the housing adjacent the side port. The door subassembly is operatively engaged with the housing adjacent the side port and includes a translating sleeve positioned within the housing and a ball sealing member adapted to engage the ball seat of the housing. A ball port is formed through the ball sealing member. A cooperatively engaged helical track and follower member are provided for translating a driving movement along the central axis through the translating sleeve to a rotational movement of the ball sealing member about the central axis. Driving movements acting on the door subassembly can be provided by a standard shifting tool.

  • Patent number: 5044888
Abstract: A variable speed pump control system and method which senses operational parameters during the first one half of the down stroke to control pump speed to maximize production. The method and equipment maintains ths fluid level of a well as low as possible while avoiding the pump-off condition. A variable speed motor drives a pump jack and a control means varies the pump speed. Means are provided for simultaneously sensing the pump speed, load on the rod, and the position of the rod in the pump stroke. These measurements are utilized to calculate the power transferred between the rod string and the beam during a portion of the downstroke. Before the pump is continuously operated, a series of measurements are made in the full barrel pumping condition to determine the power transferred between the rod and beam at various speeds. These are utilized to establish a relationship between pump speed and power during a portion of the downstroke.

  • Patent number: 4958861
Abstract: A tube coupling comprising a first and second tubular member the first tubular member having a bell end and the second tubular member having a pin end for telescopic engagement within the bell end of the first tubular member. A deformable band secures the first and second tubular members in telescopic engagement and prevents relative movement therebetween. Each tubular member is provided with an annular ridge. These ridges are juxtaposed when the first and second tubular members are telescopically engaged. A deformable band having a longitudinal groove formed therein has a connector loop at one end; and a projection extending outwardly from the opposite end. The band is detachably securable around the telescopically engaged tubular members. The connector loop and projection of the deformable band cooperate to tightly secure the band around the telescopically engaged tubular members, trapping the annular ridges within a longitudinal groove, for preventing relative movement of the tubular member.
