Abstract: A valve comprising a valve body (10) having inlet (14 ) and outlet (18) passages communicating with a valve chamber (15). A valve element (90) is movable through the valve chamber adjacent a valve seat (92) and a flow deflector ring (104) having a central opening which has discontinuous deflector surfaces (106) around a central opening separated by spaced grooves (108) arranger to disrupt flow a stream of fluid flowing between the valve element and the valve seat to prevent the formation of a vena contracta downstream from the valve seat. A plurality of sleeves (34,36) having cylindrical walls divide the valve chamber to form an entrance section (15a) and an outlet section (15b).
Abstract: A comfortable backpacking harness including a plurality of flexible shoulder straps connected end to end by buckles to form an endless belt and a plurality of adjustable length article engaging loops permanently connected to the shoulder strap assembly. The shoulder straps and article engaging loops connected together in a manner to form a weight supporting quadrilateral on the back of the wearer whereby loads of any shape or weight can be carried by the harness.
Abstract: In accordance with the present invention, a constant flow rate control valve is provided including a cup member disposed in the flow passage through the valve. The cup member has a port located in an end wall of the cup member and a plurality of ports in the sidewall of the cup member. The cup member is movable axially within the valve, with such movement being opposed by a resilient spring member downstream of the cup member. A fixed shear ring in the valve body surrounding the sidewall of the cup member blocks or exposes areas of the sidewall ports in response to movement of the cup member. Fluid pressure acting on the end wall of the cup member urges the cup member against the spring, so that the shear member exposes only that sidewall port area appropriate to the pressure being exerted. The sidewall ports have non-identical shapes and areas, with one or more longer sidewall ports extending further toward the end wall of the cup member than the other, shorter sidewall ports.
Abstract: Impingement heating or cooling apparatus that employs an axial flow fan, a plenum, collector and a columnating assembly for directing jets of a temperature controlled gas against the surface of a food product. Means for contacting a first layer of food products with impinging jets of a temperature controlled gas and for simultaneously contacting a second layer of food products with an alternating, convective flow of a temperature controlled gas is also provided.

Abstract: Disclosed is a valve trim design for use in reducing valve cavitation. Valve and seat are axially movable and have frustoconical facing surfaces which form an annulus therebetween to control flow. The seat has an external frustoconical surface and a plurality of pairs of ports communicating with an internal bore. The ports are aligned so that flow from the ports impinge upon each other within the interior chamber of the valve seat to reduce cavitation.
Abstract: An improved mechanism for cushioning shocks imparted to a stationary body from various sizes of vessels, including a resiliently retarded telescoping member having a first movement versus thrust characteristic with a relatively high rate of movement versus thrust over a first predetermined range of thrusts, and an abruptly lower rate of movement versus thrust for thrusts exceeding said first predetermined range.
Abstract: A clamping apparatus is disclosed for use in clamping wooden chord and web members together in manufacturing wooden trusses. The clamping apparatus uses an inflatable conduit (50) to force an elongated clamp to a closed position. In a second embodiment, two inflatable conduits (150 and 152) move a tubular member (136) in opposite directions for urging a truss (120) against a stationary brace (32). Tubes (150 and 152) are selectively inflated and deflated through a valve (170).
Abstract: An actuator control system is disclosed using fluid dispensing means to selectively add or remove fluid from a closed actuator system, whereby the movement of the actuator is volume rather than pressure responsive.
Abstract: Disclosed is a bellows control valve with means to pressurize the bellows chamber to very high pressure without creating a significant detrimental differential pressure across the bellows.
Abstract: A loader device for loading carpet rolls onto small trucks comprising a frame with a plurality of rollers mounted transversely thereon at spaced intervals along the length of the frame, the rollers being coupled together to be driven simultaneously in the same rotational direction by a variable speed reversible DC motor, the rollers having a textured surface to provide strong frictional engagement with the carpet rolls, the frame being adapted to fit wholly within the bed area of the truck with the tail gate closed when not in use and to slide to a loading position with one end extending over the open tail gate of the truck.
Abstract: An inker for a printing press in which an excess of ink is applied to the surface (45) of a resilient roller and the ink is metered by a metering member (10') to form a film of controlled thickness on the resilient roller surface. The metering member is a long strip including a polished metering surface and a polished support surface (26) which intersect to form a polished metering edge (25), the polished support surface (26) intersecting with a polished trailing surface (28a) to form a polished trailing edge (28b). The metering edge (25) and trailing edge (28b) are closely spaced such that the entire support surface is indented into the resilient roller surface for metering a film (130) of ink and for assuring that the ink will separate cleanly from the metering member at the trailing edge (28b).
Abstract: An apparatus and method to saturate a fibrous web. The apparatus comprises a sealed chamber divided to form a low pressure preparation zone and a high pressure treatment zone. Air is evacuated from the open area between the fibers in the web in the vacuum zone and liquid in the treatment zone is forced into the evacuated open area between the fibers in the web. A pair of nip rollers are submerged in liquid in the treatment zone for squeezing residual air and liquid from the open area between the fibers in the web to cause liquid to be drawn into the open area between the fibers in the web upon exiting the nip between the rollers.
Abstract: Aircraft attitude along the pitch axis is controlled by inputting a velocity command to a pitch control subsystem that includes a velocity side channel and a gain side channel of a pitch servo amplifier. An output from each channel of the pitch servo amplifier is applied to a pitch servo motor for positioning a primary control surface. The velocity of the pitch servo motor is detected by a velocity detector that generates a velocity feedback signal and control signals for each channel of the pitch servo amplifier. Also responsive to the velocity signal of the detector is a pre-flight test circuit for pre-flight checkout of the pitch control subsystem. In each line from the output of the channels of the pitch servo amplifier is a current detector that is part of a pitch trim control subsystem that responds to the current through the pitch servo motor to generate a trim velocity command signal. This velocity command signal is input to a velocity side channel and a gain side channel of a trim servo amplifier.
Abstract: A clamping means is disclosed for use in clamping wooden chord and web members together in manufacturing wooden trusses. The clamping means uses an inflatable conduit to force an elongated clamp to a closed position.
Abstract: An automatic sheet register control system for a printing press comprising: photocells (81-85) sensing the position of a sheet (5) relative to printing cylinder (48U); and a computer (86-89) to generate signals to actuators (75a, 75b) to adjust the length of bands (16a, 16b) which carry the sheets (5) to establish and control register of the sheet (5) relative to the printing cylinder (48U).

Abstract: An exercising device comprising a computer associated with an actuating arm pivotally mounted on a frame, movement of the actuating arm being resisted by a double acting hydraulic cylinder. Position and pressure sensors associated with the hydraulic cylinder and the actuating arm deliver signals through the microprocessor to the computer for indicating power or work exerted by a user for moving the actuating arm. The double acting cylinder has a control valve to permit independent adjustment of resistance to movement of the piston in opposite directions.
Abstract: An improved seal apparatus for a rotary machine including a rotary internal combustion engine. The machine generally comprises a rotor rotatably disposed in a circular working section in a hollow machine housing, a divider valve, and for an internal combustion engine a compression-expansion valve being rotatably secured in the housing and in sealing engagement with the rotor to divide the working space in the housing into an intake space and an exhaust space. The rotor of the machine has a piston formed thereon and the improved seal apparatus includes a plurality of seal bars in recesses between recessed connecting runners in the piston perimeter surface and urged into sealing relation with the inner wall of the housing.
