  • Patent number: 4883952
Abstract: An optical sensor comprises a polychromatic light source (3), a detector (4), and first and second polarizers (7) (8) disposed in the light path between the source and the detector. The polarization axis of the first polarizer (7) is substantially orthogonal to that of the second (8), and there is a modulating element (6) of birefringent material disposed therebetween. The modulating element is disposed such that a change in the parameter to be measured alters the optical path length of the polychromatic light through the modulating element, thereby changing the color of the light incident on the detector (4). The detector comprises first and second photo-responsive elements (9) (10), the responsivity with respect to wavelength of the first element (9) being different from that of the second (10).

  • Patent number: 4835384
Abstract: An apparatus for determining displacement of an object, comprises a light source which propagates a polychromatic light signal along a path to a detector, the detector being capable of detecting the intensity of incident radiation at a plurality of different wavelengths, and a radiation modulation means mechanically coupled to said object for movement therewith, displacement of the object being arranged to cause displacement of the radiation modulating means in said path such as to vary the distributed spectral content of the light reaching the detector. In one embodiment the radiation modulation means comprises a filter which attenuates the intensity of transmitted wavelengths to different degrees and which is mechanically coupled to said object such that movement of the object displaces the filter so as to vary the extent to which the filter intercepts the radiation signal propagated by said light source.

  • Patent number: 4814601
Abstract: A moire fringe displacement sensor includes first and second gratings (3) (4), a polychromatic light source (1) illuminating the gratings, and a detector (8). The gratings are disposed such that a relative displacement of the first and second gratings causes a variation in the color of the light reaching the detector. The detector (8) comprises first and second photo-responsive elements (11) (12), the responsivity with respect to wavelength of the first element (11) being different from that of the second (12). Signals from the photo-responsive elements are fed to a micro-processor (15) which calculates the color of the light incident on the detector as represented by two or more parameters on the Chromaticity (CIE) Diagram, and interprets the color in terms of the displacement of the first and second gratings.

  • Patent number: 4739656
Abstract: A fluid flow sensing device comprises first and second p-n junctions, one of which is arranged to be disposed in the fluid flow to be measured and the other of which is arranged to be disposed at a position such that its temperature depends only on that of the fluid. An amplifier monitors the voltage drop across the first p-n junction. A comparator compares the measured voltage drop across the first p-n junction with a reference level to provide a feedback voltage which is used to control the heating of the first p-n junction such as to maintain the temperature of that junction constant irrespective of variations in the fluid flow or the fluid temperature. A current is passed through the second p-n junction and the voltage drop across it is monitored and compared with the feedback voltage to provide a signal which is a function of fluid flow alone.

  • Patent number: 4705436
Abstract: A drill jig for making a channel in a timber for containing flowable preservative comprises a body (10) having a first or perpendicular guide bore (20), a second or oblique guide bore (22) and a third or vertical guide bore (24). The guide bores (22) and (24) intersect in a cylindrical locating spigot (18) and the axes of the guide bores (20) and (22) intersect in the timber to be drilled. A collet (26) on the shank of the drill bit (28) limits the depth of penetration by the lower face (32) of the collet abutting an abutment face (34) on the body (10). The depth of pentration when using the guide bore (20) or (24) is limited by the collet (26) coming into abutment with an adjustable stop (38) on the body (10). No adjustments are necessary as between drilling perpendicular or oblique bores and it is ensured that the bores formed in the timber intersect to form a continuous channel for receiving flowable preservative.

  • Patent number: 4695956
Abstract: An apparatus and method of use thereof which quantifies the processes of hemostasis occuring in human blood. The apparatus utilizes an oscillator transducer which is sensitive to changes of viscosity and tensile strength of surrounding blood as coagulation occurs in the latter. An oscillator, which may be excited to oscillate at a natural resonant frequency, is housed within an enclosure designed to accommodate a finite quantity of blood in contact with the oscillator. As hemostasis occurs, the frequency at which the oscillator resonates is impaired. A control and computation system for measurement of the change of frequency is coupled to the oscillator, which counts the number of oscillations of the oscillator transducer during a predetermined time period, and computes the frequency as a function of the known time period and the counted oscillations.

  • Patent number: 4693034
Abstract: A master pattern assembly for providing eyeglass lens circumference shape guidance in an edge grinding machine, suitable for creation of a replacement lens for eyeglasses where one lens is broken and one remains intact. The intact lens is removed from the frame, its optical center is located, and the lens is adhered to a dual-adhesive pad which is also adhered on a side opposite the lens to a body block. The block and pad define coaxial throughgoing bores centered on the optical center of the lens. The bore of the block is then received on a rotatable axis of a conventional edge grinding machine, where the assembly is rotated and the circumference of the intact lens acts as a cam in contact with a pattern follower, controlling circumference formation of a new lens.
