Abstract: An apparatus for thoroughly mixing components of fluid material and, more particularly, for combining and homogenizing streams of gaseous, liquid and/or granular material by passage through a tube-like conduit which contains a plurality of consecutive mixing elements comprising a set of stationary, angularly disposed flow-deflecting baffles of particular form and configuration which cause a repeated dividing, displacement and recombining of the fluid stream and thereby provide improved radial mixing and approximation of ideal plug flow.
Abstract: Foams of mixtures of polyolefins and styrene polymers are produced by mixing the polymers with low-boiling expanding agents in the presence of a hydrogenated styrene/butadiene block polymer or a graft polymer of styrene on a polyolefin at temperatures above the softening point of the polymer mixture and under a pressure which prevents foaming of the mixture, followed by extrusion of the foamable mixture into a zone of lower pressure. The resulting foams are resistant to organic solvents.
Abstract: A portable conditioned heated air breathing device is provided comprising a compartmented canister with a collapsible hose storage compartment, an air conditioning compartment and a heating compartment and which also contains an ejector for ejecting an additive into the conditioned air as well as a structural arrangement for mixing fresh air with heated air, a filter for filtering the air and a device for igniting a burner from the outside of the canister and a manually controllable valve for controlling the flow of fuel to the burner.
Abstract: A process for the production of a multifilament textured yarn by melt-spinning different polymers (for example a polyamide and a polyester) or copolymers (for example copolymers of nylon-6 and nylon-6,6) to form a highly preoriented multifilament yarn at substantially the same draw-off rate for all the constituent filaments of the yarn, followed by stretching under substantially the same stretching conditions for all the constituent filaments of the yarn, the stretching ratio lying above the elastic limit of at least one of the spun polymers and the preorientation of the freshly spun filaments being sufficient to provide a maximum stretching ratio available in the stretching stage of not more than 1:2.5, i.e. not more than 2.5 times the unstretched or spun length of filaments. Yarns are produced which may have the appearance of texturized continuous multifilament yarns or crimped staple fiber yarns.
Abstract: 2-Hydroxynaphthalene-3-carboxylic acid is prepared by the reaction of sodium-.beta.-naphtholate with carbon dioxide, extraction of the reaction mixture in the presence of water with benzene or a benzene derivative in a specific ratio and separation of the end product from the extracted mixture. The product is a starting material for the production of dyes and a coupling component in the manufacture of azo dyes.

Abstract: A process for the quiet and smokeless flaring of process gases by sharp separation of the air intake and combustion steps. Compared with conventional off-gas flares, steam consumption is reduced and blow-back of the flame into the mixing tube is avoided by using a combined mixing and combustion chamber. This extends the operating range and life of flare facilities.

Abstract: A process for the manufacture of acicular magnetic gamma-iron(III) oxide by reducing acicular alpha-iron(III) oxide to magnetite and then oxidizing it to gamma-iron(III) oxide, wherein the alpha-iron(III) oxide is treated with a water-soluble alkaline earth metal compound and an alkylphenol with one to three alkyl radicals, each of 4 to 24 carbon atoms, on the benzene nucleus. Gamma-iron(III) oxides manufactured in this way show better magnetic orientability in the binder-containing dispersion, and a higher coercive force than prior art magnetic pigments.

Abstract: Coated magnetic recording media, especially video tapes and computer tapes, comprising a non-magnetic base carrying a magnetic coating which consists of a dispersion, essentially containing a finely divided magnetic pigment in an organic binder and at least one lubricant. A compound of the formula ##STR1## in which n is an integer of from 1 to 3 and R is alkyl, alkoxyalkyl or aralkyl, each of 3 to 18 carbon atoms, is used as a lubricant. The products have high abrasion resistance coupled with only little transfer of material to the magnetic heads even under fluctuating climatic conditions.

Abstract: An improved tape transport apparatus of the type in which the supply and take-up reels are simultaneously driven by surface engagement of a capstan with the outermost layer of tape on each reel. The uniform tape tension required in a system of this type is produced and maintained by the combination of a braking force on the reel acting as the supply reel and of different biasing forces which cause different deformation of the capstan at the points of surface engagement of the supply and take-up reels with the capstan. A substantially constant tension profile is obtained by balancing the tension contributed by the two types of forces. A braking/biasing unit on each of the reel shafts provides both an undirectional braking force to resist the rotation of the shaft acting as the supply shaft and the biasing forces required to produce the unequal deformation.
Abstract: Magnetic recording tape especially suitable for use as video tape and computer tape, comprising a base carrying a magnetic coating which consists essentially of a dispersion of a finely divided magnetic pigment and at least one lubricant in an organic binder. The lubricant is a compound of the formula ##STR1## IN WHICH N IS AN INTEGER OF FROM 3 TO 8 AND R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are an alkoxy or aralkoxy radical or conjointly are an alkyldioxy radical of 3 to 18 carbon atoms. A magnetic recording tape prepared with a high proportion of such a lubricant is distinguished by high abrasion resistance coupled with a minimum transfer of material to the magnetic heads even under fluctuating climatic conditions.
