Abstract: Organic materials normally subject to gradual degradation in the presence of oxygen are stabilized by inclusion of an aromatic fluorophosphite having at least one benzene group bonded through oxygen to phosphorus and at least one fluorine atom bonded directly to the same phosphorus. Stabilization is improved by also including a conventional phenolic antioxidant. Many of the aromatic fluorophosphites are new compounds.
Abstract: Olefin oligomers having a lower pour point are obtained by forming a mixture of C.sub.8-18 olefins containing 50-90 weight percent .alpha.-olefins and 10-50 weight percent internal olefins and oligomerizing this mixture using a Friedel Crafts catalyst (e.g. BF.sub.3) and a promoter (e.g. n-butanol). The mixture of olefins can be formed from .alpha.-olefins (e.g. 1-decene) by subjecting the .alpha.-olefins to isomerization until 10-50 weight percent of the olefins are internal olefins.

Abstract: Phosphorus compounds having at least one chlorine, bromine or iodine bonded directly to phosphorus are transhalogenated with fluorine by reaction with a fluoride salt, e.g., KF, or ammonium fluoride in an inert solvent in the presence of a catalytic amount of a carboxylic acid.
Abstract: Hydrocarbylaluminoxanes, especially methylaluminoxane, having high catalytic activity in the polymerization of olefins are made in high yield and low gel content by impinging (1) a solution of a hydrocarbyl aluminum, e.g. trimethyl aluminum, in an inert solvent, e.g. toleune, with (2) a water dispersion in an inert solvent (e.g. toluene) in a T-shaped reactor such that the hydrocarbyl aluminum and water immediately react to form an aluminoxane solution which is promptly removed from the T-shaped reactor through its third arm. The water dispersion is formed by passing a solvent/water mixture through a static mixer which comprises a plurality of deflection vanes forming a tortuous path through the static mixer causing extremely turbulent flow.
Abstract: 3,5-di-alkyl-4-hydroxybenzyl-substituted aromatics are made in improved yield by co-feeding 2,6-di-alkyl-4-alkoxymethyl phenol and sulfuric acid to a benzene compound, e.g. mesitylene, in an inert solvent at -10.degree. to 50.degree. C.

Abstract: Antioxidant compounds having the structure: ##STR1## in which p is 1 or 2 and + is a tert-butyl group provide excellent oxidation stability, melt flow index and yellow index, especially in polypropylene.
Abstract: Phenol is di-orthoalkylated in high yield by reacting, in a first stage, phenol containing only 1 mole of an aluminum phenoxide for each 100-800 moles of phenol with an olefin at 85.degree.-175.degree. C. until the reaction mixture contains 3 wt percent or less phenol and then, in a second stage, continuing the reaction at 25.degree.-80.degree. C. until the mixture contains a substantial amount of 2,6-di-alkylphenol.

Abstract: A highly efficient continuous process for the winning of bromine from a bromide-containing brine which increases overall bromine recovery efficiency, decreases chlorine requirements, decreases waste-brine neutralization, improves steam recovery, increases capacity and significantly reduces total amount of steam necessary for bromine recovery over prior art. This is accomplished by operating a two-stage subatmospheric apparatus comprising a steaming out tower and a secondary flash chamber. The steaming out or contact tower is operated near the vapor pressure of the feed brine so that only stripping steam is required to remove elemental bromine from the brine. The second stage or secondary flash chamber is operated at a lower pressure than the stage one steaming out tower and enables recovery of bromine, steam and chlorine from the waste bromide-depleted brin or tail brine which might otherwise to be lost.
