  • Patent number: 6186635
Abstract: A device for increasing the visibility of bicyclists and others “at risk” at night and during other low visibility conditions, and the chemical method of producing the same, wherein the device is a luminescent, planar portion of material manufactured using a mixture of PVC, phosphorescent, brightener, and fluorescent color that results in bonding of the phosphorescent and fluorescent ingredients. The luminescent portion provides continuous, visible light emission in the dark and at other times of low visibility, given intermittent exposure to an external light source. A fastener for attaching the luminescent material to the spokes of a bicycle wheel is also provided. An anchor pin projecting through the luminescent portion has a slotted end for receiving the spoke of a bicycle wheel. A lock washer fits over the tapered end of the anchor pin and retains the spoke between the closed end of the slot and a flange.

  • Patent number: 6039521
Abstract: An improved device for attaching tailgate enclosures to a pickup truck. The device comprises attachment posts installed adjacent to the opposing interior sidewalls of a pickup truck. Each post has an upper cylinder, received telescopically into a lower cylinder and biased upward by a helical spring. Semi-rigid, textured plates are disposed at either end of the posts. Looped members are disposed on the cylinders, providing an attachment means for a net-type or other alternative tailgate enclosure. The posts are installed between the upper sidewall lip and the floor of the pickup bed at either side of the bed, being held in place by the force exerted on the upper plate by the helical spring.

  • Patent number: 5969616
Abstract: A driver alarm system for alerting the driver to conditions of fatigue and drowsiness. The alarm system has a power source, an on-off switch, signaling device, and a depressible control button. A flexible jacket for installation on the steering control of a vehicle which transmits pressure of the driver's grip to bear on the depressible control button to deactivate the signaling device. In one embodiment, the pressure transmitter is a pneumatic or hydraulic element inside the jacket. In another embodiment, the pressure transmitter is a spring-biased element. In still another embodiment, the pressure transmitting element comprises a center conductor surrounded by a compressible conductive element, providing variable resistance. Current is provided to an electromagnet when pressure on the jacket decreases resistance. The electromagnet biases a magnetic control button to activate and deactivate the signaling device in response to pressure on the jacket.

  • Patent number: 5749860
Abstract: A disposable self-capping needle which can be completely contained with its own sheath before and after injection takes place. The enclosing needle sheath has a protective rear seal and an openable front lid. By removing the seal a syringe can be connected to an internal needle plunger assembly to permit reciprocating needle motion within its sheath. Injection is accomplished by opening the sheath's front lid after which the needle may be completely withdrawn back into the sheath for safe disposal. Internal sheath guiding and holding grooves permit the needle's plunger assembly to reciprocate freely.

  • Patent number: 5640933
Abstract: A restraining chute for various types of livestock in the form of a parallelpiped frame, having side kick safety panels, a back gate, and an adjustable head catch. The safety panels are secured to longitudinal rails by releasable locking handles, which allow the panels to be moved along the rail and secured in place. The panels serve to prevent injury from the kick of the animal both before and after the animal is secured in the chute. The head catch is adjustable, consisting of two pivotal arms which can be pulled to secure the neck of the animal between the vertical pivot arm and the frame of the chute. Notches on the horizontal pivot arm fit onto a stationary peg mounted to the chute frame, allowing the head catch to be secured in place and properly adjusted. The animal is thus secured without complex restraints that tend to obstruct grooming and washing. A back gate on the chute enhances the safety of the user by preventing the animal from exiting the chute before it is fully secured therein.
