  • Patent number: 4879050
Abstract: The invention provides an efficient and reliable method for extinguishing fire of a chlorosilane compound, which is a notoriously dangerous inflammable material in respect of the difficulty of extinguishment of fire thereof, by sprinkling a specific porous inert silica based or silica-alumina based powder defined by the content of silica or overall content of silica and alumina as well as various parameters as a powdery material followed by spraying an aqueous solution of sodium chloride, potassium chloride or calcium chloride. The fire extinguishing efficiency can be further enhanced when the sprinkled powder is a blend of the above defined porous powder and a specific silica sand in a specific proportion. When the sprinkled powder is such a binary blend, considerably good results can be obtained even by omitting the step of spraying of the aqueous salt solution.

  • Patent number: 4877678
Abstract: The printing sheet of the invention comprises a base sheet and two successive coating layers provided thereon, of which the first coating layer, which serves as a water-absorbing layer, is formed of a dispersion of a powdery highly water-absorptive resin, e.g., poly(sodium acrylate), in a polymeric vehicle and the second coating layer, which serves as a water absorption-controlling layer, is formed of a dispersion of an inorganic powder such as silica in a polymeric vehicle. By virtue of the adequately controlled velocity and capacity of water absorption, the printing sheet can give a very satisfactory printed matter in respect of the color density and sharpness of the printed patterns when it is used in printing on an ink-jet printer by using an aqueous ink.

  • Patent number: 4874416
Abstract: In place of the conventional rod-in-tube method, a novel method is proposed for the preparation of a high-quality base material of quartz glass for optical fibers according to which a glassy rod composed of the core portion of a larger refractive index and the first cladding layer of a smaller refractive index is first prepared by silica soot deposition by the flame hydrolysis of a gaseous silicon compound followed by dehydration and vitrification, and then the glassy rod is covered with a layer of further silica soot deposition which is subsequently converted to the second cladding layer by vitrification. The inventive base material for optical fibers is excellent in the geometry relative to the diameter of the core portion and thickness of the cladding layer as well as concentricity of the core and the cladding.

  • Patent number: 4871679
Abstract: A method of preparing an integral multilayer analytical element such as for analysis of calcium comprising a water-impermeable light-transmissive support, a reagent layer containing a water-soluble indicator capable of reacting with an analyte to produce an optically detectable change, and a porous spreading layer containing a spreading action controller and/or an acid capable of decomposing the calcium compounds in a sample, superposed in this order, wherein the spreading action controller and/or the acid is dissolved in an organic solvent which does not dissolve the above water-soluble indicator, this solution is incorporated into the porous spreading layer, and this superposed material is dried. In the method of the present invention, the migration of the water-soluble indicator in the reagent layer at the time of incorporating the spreading action controller or the acid into the spreading layer is inhibited by using a particular organic solvent.
