Abstract: A communications device provides a user with a sensory cue that informs the user of certain characteristics of a subsequent action that includes data communications. By informing the user of the data communication characteristics before the user initiates the data communication action, the invention appropriately sets user expectations regarding the data communication characteristics. For example, one embodiment of the invention is implemented in a portable communications device with a screen. For subsequent actions that include wireless communications, the portable communications device simultaneously displays a wireless link icon sensory cue next to a user interface graphic element. The user interface element is used to initiate the subsequent action. The user interface element can be an operating system object having an embedded link type icon.

Abstract: According to one embodiment of the present invention, a voltage regulator is disclosed. The voltage regulator includes a step-down portion to step down an input voltage to a desired voltage when the input voltage is provided by a battery power source; and a step-up portion to step up the input voltage to the desired voltage when the input voltage is provided by a system rail. In accordance with another embodiment of the present invention, the voltage regulator provides power to a display device such as an LCD, a flat panel display, a plasma screen, and a TFT display.
Abstract: A switch and a process of operating a switch are described where a received data frame is copied one or more times into a memory before being transmitted out of the switch. The switch and method determine how much space in the memory is needed to store all of the copies of the received data frame and then the switch and method determine locations in the memory for storing the copies of the received data frames. The copies of the received data frame are stored until the ports designated as transmitting the copies of the received data frame are ready. When a port is ready, a copy of the received data frame is read out of the memory and the port is instructed where to locate the copy on a bus. When the port has retrieved the copy of the data frame, it transmits the data frame out of the switch.
Abstract: A system may include a buffer, a local clock, and a processor. The buffer may store and output received media information. The local clock may control a rate at which the buffer outputs stored media information. The processor may determine a number of mean time differences between the local clock and a remote clock at a corresponding number of different times. The processor may also detect whether the local clock has drifted relative to the remote clock based on the number of mean time differences, and the processor may adjust the local clock if the local clock has drifted.
Abstract: Various embodiments of a magnetic detacher with open access are described. In one embodiment, the magnetic detacher may include magnet assembly to provide open access to a hard tag and a magnetic field sufficient to disengage a clamping mechanism of the hard tag. Other embodiments are described and claimed.
Abstract: Various method and apparatus are provided to perform call routing, queuing and other call processing in packet telephony networks. In one embodiment, an automatic call distributor (ACD) system to perform call processing for packet telephony calls may include a call control proxy subsystem coupled to an ACD application. The call control proxy subsystem may be arranged to handle call control for packet telephony calls on behalf of one or more other subsystems or endpoints. The ACD application may control or coordinate call processing for packet telephony calls.

Abstract: A method and apparatus to compensate for spectral attenuation are described wherein the spectral attenuation for a communications channel is determined, a first filter is created for the attenuation and the first filter compensates for the attenuation. The spectral attenuation for the communications channel is determined by a received L sequence signal that is used to model the spectral attenuation as a second filter. Other embodiments are described and claimed.
Abstract: A network apparatus is provided between a network and a plurality of processing nodes or servers. The network apparatus includes a content based message director (e.g., XML director) to route or direct messages received from the network to one of the processing nodes based upon the application data, including business transaction information.
Abstract: A method and apparatus for diversity switching control are generally described herein. According to one embodiment, a diversity control network is introduced which effectively reduces the number of coaxial cables required to interface with N antennas from the conventional N cables, to N/2 thereby providing significant cost saving.

Abstract: Various embodiments of an internal antenna and motherboard architecture are described. In one embodiment, a wireless device may include a housing enclosing a first motherboard and a second motherboard. The ground plane of the first motherboard may be coupled to the ground plane of the second motherboard within the housing. The first motherboard and the second motherboard may act as an internal antenna system for the wireless device. Other embodiments are described and claimed.
Abstract: An apparatus, system, method, and article for a multi-tap microelectromechanical inductor are described. The apparatus may include an inductor formed on a substrate, a switching mechanism contacting the inductor to vary inductance of said inductor; and a disconnect mechanism contacting the inductor to reduce parasitic effects of the inductor upon actuation of said switching mechanism. Other embodiments are described and claimed.
Abstract: A method and apparatus to model routing in a network are described wherein a data test route table (DTRT) is created from a route table, a stream of packets to test the DTRT is generated, and the DTRT is tested using the stream of packets. Other embodiments are described and claimed.
Abstract: A system to monitor performance of a computing device includes a first bridge to interface with a first set of devices, and a second bridge to interface with a second set of devices. Configuration registers store configuration data associated with the second set of devices, and are accessible through the second bridge. A hub interface allows data to transfer downstream from the first bridge to the second bridge, and allows data to transfer upstream from the second bridge to the first bridge. A controller, external to the first and second bridges, accesses the configuration registers via the second bridge. A logic device allows the second bridge to send data to, and receive data from, the controller.

Abstract: Various embodiments directed to performing speech recognition over a data channel are described. One or more embodiments may comprise encoding voice information to be communicated over a voice channel using a voice compression algorithm, switching from said voice channel to a data channel, encoding voice information to be communicated over said data channel using said voice compression algorithm used for said voice channel, and communicating encoded voice information over said data channel. Other embodiments are described and claimed.
Abstract: Methods and apparatus are provided for reserving power in a handheld computer by inducing a sleep mode when the energy supply of the handheld computer reaches a predetermined low level. A software is provided which operates a sleep mode when a device of the handheld computer detects a predetermined low battery voltage. A processor operates the software to place the handheld computer in a low energy-consuming shutdown state in which an interrupt controller operates to mask those interrupt signals thus providing an user with the impression that the device has entered an unresponsive sleep mode. In maintaining the sleep mode, the processor operates such that all input signals that request the handheld computer to power up remain active but so long as the battery voltage remains below a predetermined voltage the interrupt signals to power up selected applications and devices are masked.
