  • Patent number: 4740137
Abstract: The pump system provides for a more efficient operation of multistage centrifugal pumps operating at less than designed capacity. The system includes a flow meter located in the inlet conduit to the pump, a control valve is located in a discharge conduit that extends from the discharge of the first stage of the pump to the inlet conduit, and a connection between the flow meter and control valve whereby the control valve will open to bypass liquid from the first stage discharge to assure that flow through the first stage is greater than the value wherein the internal recirculation occurs. Thus, the pump is capable of circulating a substantially greater amount of liquid through the first stage of the pump when the demand volume at the pump discharge is substantially less than the design value.

  • Patent number: 4729960
Abstract: Disclosed are methods of prospecting for subterranean deposits of hydrocarbon. Earth samples are taken at various depths in a substantially vertical column of earth overlying an area suspected of containing an underground petroliferous deposit. The magnetic susceptibility of each sample is then measured (or the concentration of maghemite or greigite therein determined) to determine the relative concentration of diagenetic magnetic material therein. The relative concentration data is correlated with depth from the surface to the approximate maximum penetration depth of surface-related oxygen. An anomaly occurring in the curve produced by such correlation demonstrates the likelihood of discovering a subterranean deposit therebelow.

  • Patent number: 4720127
Abstract: A door latch includes an elongated stationary case and a latch bolt mounted to reciprocate longitudinally in the case between outwardly extended and inwardly retracted positions. The latch bolt is driven between the two positions by a driver mechanically connected to the latch bolt and longitudinally movable within the case under control of first and second cams. The rotation of either cam will cause the driver to move in direction to pull the latch bolt to in inwardly retracted position. A pushbutton key is mounted to a sidewall of the case and movable in direction into and out of the case to lock one of the cams against rotation. The key is mounted to a pin which is received by a camming means on the other cam whereby rotation of the other cam will move the pin in direction to retract the key from the first mentioned cam. A spindle for rotating the cams is comprised of first and second segments in end butting relation and rotatable with respect to each other.

  • Patent number: 4714259
Abstract: In a sealing ring structure comprising a sealing ring (1) made of a tough-elastic plastic material and a stressing ring (11) made of a rubber-elastic material, the sealing ring (1) is provided with an annular recess (2) on its sealing surface which rests against the other machine component (14). The stressing ring (11) is arranged in the sealing ring (1) approximately centrically relative to the said recess so that the force of the stressing ring (11) is distributed over the two end portions of the sealing ring (1) defining the recess (2). Any dimensional deviations resulting from tolerances or temperature changes are compensated by smaller or greater deflection of the central portion of the sealing ring (1), without notable changes to the surface pressures encountered between the sealing ring (1) and the sealing surface (15) which are essential for the proper operation.

  • Patent number: 4708212
Abstract: Lag-determining method and apparatus which provides for determination of and an indication of when borehole cuttings from preselected depths arrive at the surface of the earth is disclosed and includes devices for inputting the value of the lag strokes and the predetermined drilling depth increments. A signal representative of the actual drilling depth is provided to a computer circuitry. Counter circuitry accumulates a count of the strokes of the positive displacement mud pump. Adder circuitry sums the lag strokes and the accumulated count of the mud pump. Comparator circuitry provides an output when the compared values of the accumulated number of strokes of the positive displacement mud pump equals the sum of the lag strokes and the strokes of the positive displacement mud pump at a predetermined depth plus the depth increment. Visual and audio indications provide notification of the arrival of borehole cuttings from preselected depths.

  • Patent number: 4692575
Abstract: A switch responsive to fluctuations in the level of a vacuum. A ball is contained in an upright chamber and is normally in contact with an actuating means in the chamber. The actuating means is normally biased to one position but is shifted by the weight of the ball to another position. The chamber is connected to the vacuum source so as to apply a lifting suction force to the ball. If the suction force exerted by the vacuum exceeds a predetermined level, the ball will be lifted from the actuating means thereby shifting the position of the actuating means and generating a signal indicative of the vacuum level. Means are provided to adjust the level of vacuum necessary to lift the ball from the actuating means.
