Abstract: A canceling method and apparatus can achieve a fast communication by improving an S/N value by adaptively canceling a noise with respect to a frequency or band having a large noise by selecting noise canceling band in accordance with a condition of noise being generated. A reception signal contains a specific signal having a specified time position, amplitude and phase. A noise distribution of the specific signal is recognized so as to predict a noise by extracting a frequency band having a larger noise component from a pair of frequencies generated by the insertion of the specific signal. An original transmission signal is reproduced by canceling the predicted noise from the reception signal.
Abstract: A pen-based portable computer system, and more particularly, to a computer system which includes a host computer or a server that is adapted to interface with one or more wireless interface devices over a radio link. The wireless interface devices are pen-based devices which include a digitizer panel and are adapted to operate on a mouse mode, as well as a pen mode. In a mouse mode, pen down events are translated into mouse data and transmitted over the radio link to the remote server or host computer. In a pen mode, pen down events in an ink field are formulated as pen data. In accordance with an important aspect of the present invention, the wireless interface device includes a local handwriting recognition system for translating handwriting into characters which are then transmitted to the remote server or host computer over a radio link for processing.

Abstract: A communication system capable of performing efficient Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) transmission by flexibly handling connection services. A Bit Error Rate (BER) measurement unit measures BER of individual optical signals with different wavelengths. A BER transmission unit transmits BER information to the sending end. A wavelength assignment unit assigns each wavelength to at least one of high Quality-of-Service (QoS) communication and low QoS communication. A wavelength-assignment exchanging unit identifies low quality wavelengths with high BERs being used for the high QoS communication, and unless the low quality wavelengths being used for the high QoS communication outnumber the high quality wavelengths with low BERs being used for the low QoS communication, it exchanges the low quality wavelengths and an equal number of the high quality wavelengths. An optical signal transmission unit multiplexes the wavelengths to transmit the optical signals.
Abstract: A transmitting apparatus for cross connecting and transmitting main signals which enter via ring-configured transmission lines to which working and protection channels have been assigned in first and second directions, and rescuing a main signal by looping back the main signal in the opposite direction using the protection channel when a transmission line fails. Storing non-rescue information which indicates whether each channel that is the object of rescue by loop-back is a non-rescue channel. Determining whether a failure for which rescue is impossible has occurred in each channel, which is the object of rescue, other than a non-rescue channel. On the basis of main-signal cross-connect information, interchanging a result of discrimination of each channel and inserting the interchanged result of discrimination in the main signal of the corresponding channel after cross connect.
Abstract: An apparatus for measuring a medical substance where a prism having a high refractive index, a thin metal film formed on one of the surfaces of the prism, a light source for making a light incident upon the thin metal film, and a detector for detecting an incident angle of a light being made incident upon a film on which a plasmon resonance phenomenon is generated on the thin metal film are provided. The medical substance, i.e. antigen as an object to be measured, is fixed to the surface of the thin metal film, and the condition for generating the plasmon resonance phenomenon is varied when a mixture of antibody which is coupled with the medical substance in a specific manner and a sample is made contact with a surface of the thin metal film; and the amount of the medical substance can be detected by recognizing the change with a high sensitivity.
Abstract: The movement of an object due to the continuous pushing of a simple ON/OFF switch is made an easier-to-use interface for users by a method of moving an object displayed on a screen of a TV monitor of a computer having a controller which has a pressure-sensitive unit. In the method, the pushing by a user on the controller is sensed by the pressure-sensitive unit, a pressure-sensing output signal is determined depending on the pushing pressure, and the object is moved within the screen of the TV monitor depending on the magnitude of the pressure-sensing output signal of the controller.
Abstract: To provide a plasma display device which implements a peak luminance higher than prior art, reduces the power dissipation, improves the smoothness of gradation display, and conducts clear display suitable especially for TV display. By setting a plurality of APL levels according to the average value of the scene brightness, and by shortening a sustaining pulse period and increasing the number of sustaining pulses of each sub-field in APL levels having small APL, the peak luminance is raised. Further, by making the sustaining pulse period long in APL levels having large APL requiring large discharge light emission power, the light emission efficiency is improved and the maximum power dissipation is reduced. The luminance distribution in the scene when the APL level is small is detected. On the basis of that information, setting of the number of sustaining pulses and the sustaining pulse period is changed in the same APL level.
Abstract: A semiconductor film formation method allowing a single-crystal semiconductor film to be formed at a desired position on a substrate with reliability is disclosed. After preparing the substrate having a non-single-crystal semiconductor film formed thereon and an optical mask having a predetermined pattern, a projection area of the optical mask is relatively positioned at the desired position on the substrate. Thereafter, the desired position of the non-single-crystal semiconductor film is irradiated with laser light through the optical mask to change an irradiated portion of the non-single-crystal semiconductor film to the single-crystal semiconductor film. Then, an insulation film is formed on at least the single-crystal semiconductor film.
