Abstract: New thermoplastic polymers based on aromatic polyether-sulfones, which have molecular weights of from about 15,000 to 35,000 and contain units of the formula ##STR1## and a process for their manufacture.
Abstract: The reaction product obtained from cis-benzenetrioxide, hydrazine and phthalic anhydride, and its manufacture. The compounds are intermediates for stereospecific syntheses of aminocyclitols.
Abstract: A process for admixing additives to plastics and simultaneously removing volatile constituents in a horizontal devolatilizing extruder. Taken in sequence in the direction of flow, the additives are first introduced into the devolatilizing extruder from above, and the plastic melt, solution or dispersion is then introduced from below, while the bulk of the volatile constituents are withdrawn from the devolatilizing extruder at an orifice located vertically above the point at which the plastic is fed in. The process permits the removal of volatile constituents with simultaneous admixture of additives during aftertreatment of plastics, in a single step and at very high throughputs.

Abstract: A process for the manufacture of easily dispersed, transparent iron oxide pigments of high tinctorial strength, in which the pigment paste, moist with water, is homogenized under the action of shear forces in the presence of at least one monohydric aliphatic or cycloaliphatic alcohol of 4 to 12 carbon atoms which is partially soluble in water and can be vaporized without decomposition, and the kneaded mixture is then dried under gentle conditions. The pigments are easily dispersed in finishes or binder solutions for printing inks. Very pure and glossy colorations of optimum transparency are obtained.

Abstract: An expansion joint with an elastomer seal having longitudinal frames made from aluminum extrusions extending longitudinally of an expansion joint for pavements and bridge decks. The longitudinal frames are mounted by anchor bolts in the pavement or bridge deck concrete, which pavement or bridge deck has a concrete or asphaltic wear surface. The elastomer seal is fixedly held in the longitudinal frames by elongated tongue and groove means, and the joint space is spanned by at least one shallow, V-shaped elastomer wall which deforms downwardly as the joint width becomes narrower. The longitudinal frames are held in position in steps in the concrete adjacent to the joint by the anchor bolts, which have threaded ends projecting upwardly into an upwardly facing longitudinal channel and the hollow space of a hollow segment of substantially square cross section in the respective longitudinal frames.
Abstract: Process for the manufacture of shaped articles of a mixture of polystyrene and a copolymer of ethylene with vinyl ester, acrylate or methacrylate. To this end, the said copolymers having a content of from 3 to 40% by weight of unsaturated ester are reacted with monomeric styrene in aqueous suspension in the presence of free-radical polymerization initiators. Whereas a portion of the styrene used is directly grafted onto the ethylene copolymer, the remainder of the polymerized styrene is present in a finely divided state as a homopolymer beside or within the grafted ethylene copolymer. There are obtained homogeneous shaped articles having a styrene content of more than 50% by weight.

Abstract: The invention relates to the manufacture of acicular cobalt-modified .gamma.-iron(III) oxide by coating an acicular .alpha.-iron(III) oxide or its hydrate with an inorganic protective coating, subsequent reduction to magnetite at 350.degree. to 650.degree. C, application of the cobalt compound to this magnetite or to the .gamma.-iron(III) oxide obtained therefrom by oxidation, and subsequent heat treatment at 80.degree. to 300.degree. C, if necessary with simultaneous oxidation of the magnetite to the corresponding .gamma.-iron(III) oxide. This iron oxide has high coercivity and can be used as the magnetic component in magnetic recording media for recording high frequencies without having the disadvantage of thermal and mechanical instability.

Abstract: Acicular gamma-iron(III) oxide is manufactured by reacting an iron(II) salt solution with an aqueous solution of an alkali metal hydroxide and oxidizing the resulting suspension of iron(II) hydroxide in three stages. In a first stage, at most from 0.1 to 4% by weight of the amount of iron(II) hydroxide originally present is oxidized in the course of from 0.1 to 4 hours, in a second stage from 10 to 25% by weight of the said original amount are oxidized in the course of from 1.5 to 6 hours and in a third stage the remaining amount is oxidized. After the oxidation, the goethite formed is reduced to magnetite and the latter is then oxidized to acicular gamma-iron(III) oxide.
