Abstract: A portable filter device provides a substantial mass of particulated charcoal distributed in a horizontally orientated lenticular configuration across a horizontal orifice to provide substantially uniform filtration properties over the orifice area. The filter device is releasably assemblable to allow change of particulated charcoal for replacement or modification and optionally to provide for use of a second supplementally associated mechanical filter. A casement defines an internal plenum that carries a squirrel-cage type fan that draws air through the filter, acts as an equalizing reservoir, and provides space for optional sorbefacient materials.
Abstract: A method is presented to scan fission tracks in solid state track recording material that provides a high degree of accuracy. Three separate methods of estimating true track density are used, each in its range of greatest reliability. The first method for low track density directly observes tracks and counts them. The second method for ranges of medial track density uses the Buffon needle method of determining the probability of track pile up to determine true track density. The third method, which is applicable at high track density, measures the amount of transmitted light to determine the opaque track area and relates this to true track density. The three methods are complimentary to each other and one of the set is automatically applied to any measured areal unit. The method is applied with known apparatus.
Abstract: A containment-type trap for flying insects provides a rigid, opaque top element of elongate shape that is carried within an orifice defined in the top of a flat, flexible, partially transparent container bag to support that bag. The top member provides entryways for flying insects and both top and bag provide charactristics to attract flying insects. The bag carries containerized attractant material so that oil, water or both may be added to the assembled device to create a viable trap. Water aids in drowning insects and oil aids in asphyxiating them. The trap is collapsible to a small volume for storage and transport and is inexpensive of manufacture so as to be disposable after a single use.
Abstract: A primary forming member is associated with a secondary supporting structure to allow rapid construction of elongate concrete structures of uniform cross-section by removing the primary forming member before the concrete mass supported by the secondary supporting structure is set or self-supporting. The primary forming member provides plural spaced forming arches, foldable for transport, and supported for vertical motion on a carriage providing for horizontal motion along the axis of symmetry of the formed structure. The primary forming member supports a plurality of spaced support arches of the secondary supporting structure with a plurality of cross elements therebetween to support rigid panels that create a forming surface for plastic concrete and remain as a part of a formed concrete structure to provide insulation. The forming system forms a self-supporting arched concrete surface with spaced depending arches by being sequentially moved axially therealong.
Abstract: A mechanism for monitoring multiple engine and drive-line conditions wherein annunciators are associated with a selectively engageable engine kill means. Illuminated light emitting diode (LED) gauges are arrayed to visually indicate various engine and other driveline conditions. Audio signal generating apparatus is selectively operative by a switching means to provide an audio signal responsive to an alert condition indicated by one or more of the visual display gauges. A flashing light also indicates a danger or alert condition indicated by the LED gauges. Complementing the audio and visual monitoring apparatus is an engine kill device that upon activation and after a preset delay will cut off power to the engine to limit potential engine damage.
Abstract: A collimator apparatus is disclosed for directing a high energy electron beam from an accelerator through an exit aperture and through a spaced and non-connected collimator tube in juxtaposition with a target area in a patient. The collimator tube is adjustably positioned and positionally maintained by jig structure supported independently of the accelerator structure. A rod type alignment device is releasably positionable in the collimator tube to define alignment of that tube by a novel method using traditional isocentric motions of a patient couch and accelerator gantry. Collimator tubes of varying diameters and exit configurations may be selectively utilized to accurately conform an electron beam to a particular target area and provide uniform irradiation over that target area.
Abstract: A pallet is disclosed that is formed completely of paperboard to foldably move from a collapsed to an erected mode. The pallet provides planar upper and lower surfaces with a plurality of tabs defined in each surface to extend inwardly to communicate with similar cooperating tabs from the opposite surface to form pillar-like supports that allow the two surfaces to fold from a collapsed adjacent position to an erected vertically spaced position. End fasteners and side elements communicating between the upper and lower surface elements to aid structural support and rigidity and releasably maintain the erected mode, with the columnar elements substantially in peripendicular relationship to the bottom and top elements. Spaced pairs of channels are defined between the top and bottom elements to allow access of tined forklifts from any side of the pallet. The pallet structure will support traditional loads heretofore supported on wooden pallets of similar size.
Abstract: A solid state track recording type dosimeter is disclosed to measure the time dependence of the absolute fission rates of nuclides or neutron fluence over a period of time. In a primary species an inner recording drum is rotatably contained within an exterior housing drum that defines a series of collimating slit apertures overlying windows defined in the stationary drum through which radiation can enter. Film type solid state track recorders are positioned circumferentially about the surface of the internal recording drum to record such radiation or its secondary products during relative rotation of the two elements. In another species both the recording element and the aperture element assume the configuration of adjacent disks. Based on slit size of apertures and relative rotational velocity of the inner drum, radiation parameters within a test area may be measured as a function of time and spectra deduced therefrom.
Abstract: Entry structure for a containment type insect trap having a flexible containment bag is disclosed. A first disposable configuration of my entry structure provides a vaned column slidably carried in a fastening plate to move from an inward closed position to an outward open position to provide a trap that may be used as its own container for merchandising, opened for use and after use closed to be used as a disposal container. A second reusable configuration of my entry structure releasably fastens the entry structure to the fastening plate so that both may be reused with new containment bags and attractant. The vaned configuration of the entryway column aids insect entrapment and dispersement of airborne odoriferous attractant from the trap containment bag. The trap provides the common amenities of known containment type insect traps to aid insect attraction, entrapment, killing, and disposal.
Abstract: A mechanical device to scratch and stroke household pets upon demand is disclosed. A base fastenable on a vertical structural element mounts a petting arm for vertically adjustable and foldable positioning perpendicularly thereto. The petting arm is a compound member interconnected in its medial part by a motivating mechanism that moves the outer portion, carrying a hand-like petting element in a petting and stroking fashion. The motivating mechanism may be electrically activated and if so may include an electronic eye or position sensitive switch to sense pet position to institute petting upon pet demand. Vertical adjustment of the petting arm on the base allows use of the device with various sized animals.
Abstract: An expander to repair elongate thin walled pipes or tubes of larger diameter is disclosed. Similar elongate expander beams are pivotally interconnected by plural, parallel articulating links for motion toward and away from each other. One of the beams is longer than the other and carries a hitch structure that is attachable to the ordinary three-point hitch of a wheeled tractor for locomotion, positioning, and powering of the expander. Hydraulic linkage communicates angularly between the expander beams to move them toward and away from each other for use.
Abstract: A device to attract flying insects and cause their demise by electrocution provides two spaced cylindrical grids that are oppositely charged electrically in such fashion and so spaced that an insect coming in contact therewith or passing therebetween causes an electric discharge between the grids that kills the insect. The device provides a light to aid in attracting insects primarily during hours of darkness and an openable container for olfactory attractants such as food stuffs and pheromones. The attractant container, if opened during use of the device, deactivates the electrical circuitry to avoid operator injury.
Abstract: An indicating funnel for filling a container through an opening is formed as two peripherally joined, coaxially arranged funnels, one nested within the other to define a cavity between adjacent funnel walls. A vertically movable fluid level indicator is reciprocatable between the funnels and behind a transparent wall portion of the exterior funnel for viewing between a first lowered position and a second raised postion. The indicator in its lower portion is operably associated with a float positoned within the lowermost portion of the cavity between funnels to indicate fluid level in a serviced container. The exterior funnel, at its intersection with an associated spout, optionally incorporates positoning flanges for maintaining funnel alignment and stability cooperatively with various sized openings. Additionally, the fluid level indicator may include a luminescent feature enabling enhanced visibility and a cap skirt portion lessening spill potential.
Abstract: A wheeled trailer provides carriage for a delimbing member having associated means to move a log therethrough and a cutoff member to cut delimbed logs to merchandizable lengths. The vehicle is propelled by a separate tractor and logs are presented to and removed from the mechanism by separate log handling devices. The vehicle is of small simple, rugged, durable nature to accommodate Western logging on rough and rugged terrain. The delimbing and cutoff members are pivotally mounted on the vehicle, and pivotally interconnected to each other to require parallel orientation so that delimbed logs are cut to length substantially perpendicularly to their axis. Log cutting is accomplished by a chain-type saw.
