  • Patent number: 4145562
Abstract: A DC arc furnace melt electrode is formed by a metal bar encased by a refractory encasement forming a passage containing the bar with the latter having an inner end and maintained molten by the melt and an outer end for an electrical connection and maintained solid by cooling. Granules of refractory having higher density than the melt and molten electrode end are submerged in this end to prevent or retard any flow of the molten metal, for the purpose of reducing convection heating of the molten electrode end by the melt in the furnace hearth.

  • Patent number: 4145650
Abstract: A method and apparatus for operating an internally timed switching regulator, in which a controllable switch is closed when the output voltage falls below a predetermined first set value and in which the controllable switch is opened when the output voltage exceeds a second set value in which an exponentially variable second set value is used in order to obtain at least approximately constant "on" or "off" time of the switch, to thereby keep the switching frequency constant regardless of changes of the input voltage, the load and the ambient temperature.

  • Patent number: 4144360
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for the currentless catalytic precipitation of aluminum. The surface of insulating and conductive materials (substrates) to be aluminized is (1) catalyzed, while a film-forming moisture-insensitive layer is developed, with a compound active at the boundary surfaces, by a brief immersion in a dilute solution of (a) a modified ester or acylate of titanium, zirconium or vanadium, substituted at the metal atom with short- and long-chain organic radicals or (b), a chloride of the transition metals of the IV and V secondary group of the periodic system of the elements and a water-containing metal soap of a polyvalent metal, preferably aluminum soaps; (2) is intensively rinsed with aprotic solvents, preferably having a boiling point of over 100.degree. C.; and (3) is immersed in a 1 to 4% solution of trialkylaminalanes in a solvent mixture of aromatic and highly viscous aliphatic compounds. A homogeneous and strongly adhering aluminum coating is thereby obtained.

  • Patent number: 4144470
Abstract: A pole changeable three phase winding for a fractional pole pair ratio p.sub.1 :p.sub.2 = (3m .+-. 1)/3n with p.sub.2 = 3n being an integral multiple of the number of phases and m and n being positive integers. Each phase winding for the first number of poles 2p.sub.1 consists of 2p.sub.1 /t equal winding branches, of which a number G, divisible by three, of so-called base winding-branches carry current for the first number of poles 2p.sub.1 and for the second number of poles 2p.sub.2, where one third of each of the base winding branches, for the second number of poles 2p.sub.2, are assigned to all three phase windings. The remaining number N of winding branches are designed as zero branches which are ineffective for the second number of poles 2p.sub.2, so that a division into G base winding branches and N zero branches according to G + N = 2p.sub.1 /t takes place, where t is an integral divisor of 2p.sub.1.

  • Patent number: 4143443
Abstract: A pilot hole hinge and brad door installing apparatus is disclosed which facilitates door installation by the amateur or unskilled craftperson. Hinge plates used for installing doors in accordance with the invention include pilot holes which receive pilot brads to temporarily install a door in its opening after the companion plates of the hinge are permanently installed on either the door or door jamb. While so temporarily installed, a "trial before error" fitting of the door in its opening and accurate location of the companion plates of the hinge for permanent installation of the door is achieved. The door and hinge plate mortise and screw holes are accurately located and the probability of misalignment or destructive error is reduced.

  • Patent number: 4144032
Abstract: Personal dosimeter, which provides great ease in immediately obtaining reading results, includes a plastic tube, open on the bottom, and containing near its top, a well through the bottom of which is inserted a piece of inert wick and a cover made of a soft plastic placed over the top of the tube. When the dosimeter is to be put into use, a predetermined amount of liquid reagent is injected into the well formed near the top, which reactant moves by capillary action into the inert wick where it adsorbs, absorbs or reacts with a toxic substance to be measured by the dosimeter. After the required time period for measuring exposure, the dosimeter is turned over, additional reactant placed in the tube from the bottom and mixed with the reactant therein, the reactant then being used to determine the concentration of the toxic substance.

  • Patent number: 4143891
Abstract: The negotiable document which may be used, e.g. by airlines includes a cover sheet provided with a hot spot carbon or other image transfer medium and at least one underlying sheet fully or partly coated with microcapsules of a dye intensifier and attractor. When information is imprinted on the cover sheet, the microcapsules of the dye intensifier in the underlying sheet are burst to wet the sheet and, thus, allow impregnation of the image transferred by the hot spot carbon into the fibers of the sheet. At the same time, the dye within the hot spot carbon is attracted into the sheet. The impregnation of the sheet is sufficient to prevent removal of the image from the underlying sheet without first destroying the sheet or mutilating it in such a manner that the defalcation effort is obvious.

  • Patent number: 4142319
Abstract: A fishing lure having a spoon-shaped blade with a first attachment location for a fishing line and a second attachment location spaced from the first location includes an offset tail in the form of an elongated stiff member having a first end firmly attached to the blade at the second attachment location and a second end carrying a loosely attached hook. The stiff member extends away from the blade in a direction such that the center of gravity of the member is offset with respect to an extension of a line between the first attachment point and the second attachment point. The offset tail causes the lure to trail through the water in a sinuous path with realistic short side-to-side darting motions. The stiff member may be made of wire, with beads of brass, or other material heavier than water, strung along the wire, preferably in order of increasing size from the first end to the second end.
