Abstract: A power converter interfaces a variable voltage and variable frequency motor to a fixed voltage and fixed frequency network. A first inverter is connected to the motor stator. A dc link is connected between the first inverter and a second inverter. Each inverter includes switches. A filter is connected between the second inverter and the network. A first controller for the first inverter uses a dc link voltage demand signal indicative of a desired dc link voltage to control the first inverter switches to achieve a desired dc link voltage level. A second controller for the second inverter uses a power demand signal indicative of a power to be transferred to the dc link from the network through the second inverter, and a voltage demand signal indicative of a voltage to be achieved at the filter to control the second inverter switches to achieve desired power and voltage levels.

Abstract: A workpiece supporting device for a multiple-die horizontal forging press comprises a transfer pliers arranged at each recess of a die and having a movable stem operating as a workpiece ejecting means, the stem being coupled, at one end portion thereof, facing a driving mechanism, through a coupling bracket, to a driving rod, one end of which, arranged at a recess of the die respectively of the transfer pliers, houses a workpiece restraining device, formed by a rocker mechanism, which can swing about a cross pivot pin and against a spring means affecting an arm of the rocker mechanism.

Abstract: MPLS labels can be used to tunnel data packets through IP networks. At a start point such as a router or network terminator, the IP destination address is examined and one or more labels are generated which relate to the topology of the network. The labels can include QoS information. The packet is then sent to the destination via a label switched path. At the destination the packet may be sent on via a further label switched path by examining the IP address from the received label and generating one or more fresh labels for the passage of the packet through the further label switched path.

Abstract: A power distribution system that can be used in naval ships and submarines includes a first power generation system including at least one power source for supplying power to a first service distribution system that includes at least one dc distribution busbar for carrying a distribution voltage and a distribution current and at least one switchboard that includes protective switchgear with contacts. A zonal power distribution sub-system includes a zonal power supply unit for supplying power to at least one electrical load and a zonal energy store connected to the at least one switchboard of the first service distribution system for supplying power to the zonal power supply unit. The at least one power source is regulated according to a power source foldback and stabilizing characteristic and a power source starting characteristic. The at least one electrical load is regulated according to a load shedding and stabilizing characteristic.

Abstract: In order to upgrade firmware at network elements in a communications network a network upgrade protocol agent is installed on each network element. These agents run an upgrade protocol which allows an upgrade to be loaded onto a first network element and then broadcast through the network. The protocol includes notification messages, which change the state of the network elements to which the upgrade relates, download messages which include the firmware upgrade, apply messages which instruct relevant network elements to apply the upgrade, and inventory messages which send an inventory of firmware stored at a network element to neighboring elements to enable a determination to be made of whether a network element has received all relevant firmware upgrades.

Abstract: A quiet, non-binding collapsible spring mechanism for resiliently supporting a mattress includes a system of collapsible, sinuous springs, each having hooked ends for silencing the mechanism during use or collapse, as well as central offset portions for enabling the sinuous springs to compress to a greater extent than heretofore. Both rigid and yieldable support structures connect the spring mechanism to an item of furniture.

Abstract: A stabilized support for supporting motion-sensitive, ultra-lightweight, camera equipment includes a hollow platform on which the camera equipment is mounted, and a structure on which the platform is detachably mounted. The structure has a handle, a counterweight mounted below the platform, and an arm for connecting the handle with the counterweight. The platform has a plurality of interior compartments preferably arranged in generally parallel rows at opposite sides of the platform, each row extending past a center of gravity. A plurality of ballast weights is held and confined in the interior compartments within the platform to balance the support when held by the handle, or supported by optional support legs. The placement of the ballast weights is based on a balancing procedure in which the camera equipment is balanced relative to a stationary horizontal support surface.

Abstract: An exciter assembly for supplying a field current to the rotor windings of a superconducting synchronous machine includes a pulse transformer having a stationary primary winding and a secondary winding that is mounted to the rotor of the superconducting synchronous machine for rotation therewith. A switched mode power supply supplies a pulsed voltage to the primary winding of the pulse transformer. The pulsed voltage developed at the secondary winding of the pulse transformer is supplied to the rotor windings through a rectifier semiconductor device and a pair of transfer leads. The rotor windings and a flywheel semiconductor device are located inside a cryogenic chamber or cryostat. The flywheel semiconductor device is connected in parallel with the rotor windings and operates in unison with the rectifier semiconductor device in order to provide synchronous rectification of the switched mode power supply output.

An array of six semiconductor switches 10a to 10f are arranged such that each of the three ac voltage lines AC1, AC2 an AC3 can be connected to one of the two dc voltage lines DC1 and DC2 when the associated switch is closed. A freewheel path is provided between the two dc voltage lines DC1 and DC2, which provides a fifth state of operation when all the switches 10a to 10f are open.
