  • Patent number: 4291837
Abstract: An irrigation line move operates fully automatically for twenty-four hours and includes a prime mover carriage carrying a gasoline engine which drives a pipe of a wheel line through a hydraulic drive system, and the wheel pipe, through a first planetary transmission, drives a shaft paralleling the pipe. The shaft drives a slave carriage through a second planetary transmission. The engine is started under the control of a circuit having a stepping switch which sequentially shuts off water to the line, allows the line to drain, starts the engine to move the line, stops the engine, and turns on the water to the pipe. The above cycle is repeated after a given time of irrigation. The first planetary transmission includes a chain driving a plurality of planetary sprockets.

  • Patent number: 4290591
Abstract: A hand tool is described for holding the front of an electrical outlet box a predetermined distance outwardly beyond the front surface of a stud or other structural member as the box is installed so that when wallboard or other finish material is mounted to the stud, the front of the box is flush with the wallboard. The tool includes jaws for gripping a side panel of the outlet box, indicia for indicating the depth which the side panel is inserted into the jaws, and a spacing member which engages the stud and establishes the predetermined distance between the front surface of the stud and the front of the electrical outlet box. The tool also may include an elevation establishing device for spacing the electrical outlet box a desired distance above the floor. In one embodiment, the indicia comprise pins which limit the depth to which the side panel can be inserted into the jaws. Also, in this embodiment the spacing member comprises first and second spacing bars detachably mounted to the pins.

  • Patent number: 4277223
Abstract: A double-case, multi-stage, centrifugal pump having a plurality of impellers mounted on a common shaft at axially spaced pump stages. The first pump stage is housed within a unitary forward case section of a three-section inner case assembly. Subsequent stages are housed within two rearward case sections disposed in axial joint-forming relationship with each other and radial joint-forming relationship with the forward case section. The inner case assembly is supported within an outer case assembly which provides a suction chamber surrounding the forward case section and a discharge chamber surrounding the rearward case sections, the inner and outer case assemblies being constructed in such manner that the pressure in the discharge chamber sealably forces the inner case sections together during operation of the pump.

  • Patent number: 4273064
Abstract: A hatch cover for closing and sealing a hatch opening has a latching mechanism at one side of the cover which includes a rotatable hub and plural latching arms extending in different directions from the hub towards a rim of the opening. Rotation of the hub in one direction causes the latching arms to engage the rim and tightly latch the cover to the rim while rotation of the hub in the opposite direction retracts the latching arms and frees them from the rim to enable removal of the cover from the opening. A shaft extends through the cover and is axially slidable and rotatable relative to it. The shaft is axially slidable relative to the hub and continuously engages it so that rotation of the shaft correspondingly rotates the hub. A handle fixed to the upper end of the shaft rotates the hub to activate the arms.

  • Patent number: 4272984
Abstract: For sealing a pipeline at selective locations in order to perform leak tests, a pipeline packer assembly capable of internal travel within the pipeline can be moved to and stopped at selected locations and the packer inflated against the interior pipe walls to prevent further movement of the unit, and to provide a seal so that the pipeline may be subjected to internal high pressures to detect leaks. According to the invention, a control device for such unit comprises a gamma ray detector and signal processor receiving the electrical analogue signal from the gamma ray detector. An energizing signal from the signal processor actuates a stepping switch which provides "inflate" and "deflate" energization of the packer, and is kept in "off" condition while the packer is inoperative as in transit within the pipeline. A radiation source on the surface or selectively inserted into a bore hole near the pipeline provides a stimulus for the gamma ray detector which controls the operation of the stepping switch.

  • Patent number: 4262730
Abstract: The specification discloses a strike off apparatus for leveling and compacting mounds of sand extending above the upper edges of open-top mold boxes of varying heights carried in succession along a pathway. A pair of pivotally supported rollers extend across the pathway. A sensor determines the height of a sand mound in a mold box before it reaches the rollers. An elevating mechanism responsive to the sensor adjusts the rollers to a height so that they level and compact the sand mound as the mold box is carried thereunder. A control system including electrical and hydraulic circuits is provided for automatically controlling the cyclical operation of the apparatus.

  • Patent number: 4259926
Abstract: A method and apparatus for the field rearing of planktonic larvae of marine animals involving suspending a field culture enclosure in oceanic tidal waters, stocking the enclosure with larvae of a preselected species of marine animal, permitting the enclosure to orient in response to the tidal flow of water, screening out larger plankton from entry into the enclosure and filtering water leaving the enclosure to impede the escape of the larvae and food plankton. The culture enclosure is suspended from floatation means and is equipped with a drop-rudder supported horizontally outwardly and spaced form the enclosure side The entry port has a plurality of deflection vanes to direct incoming water towards the enclosure periphery so that a substantially circular flow of water within the enclosure is achieved. By withdrawing water from the enclosure bottom a down-welling combines with the circular flow to cause food plankton and larvae to accumulate near the center and top of the enclosure.

  • Patent number: 4255876
Abstract: An athletic shoe is described including a shoe upper having a toe section and a main body section joined together and to a sole portion. Preferably the toe section extends forwardly of the metatarsophalangeal joints and is of a stretchable material to permit flexing of toes within the shoe, while the main body portion is of a nonstretchable material to restrict pronation of the rest of the foot. When the shoe is laced, first and second external reinforcing strips on the medial side of the upper, respectively exert pressure on the forward and rearward sides of the ball of the foot to restrict its motion. A third such strip on the other side of such upper limits the motion of the fifth metatarsophalangeal joint and urges the ball of the foot between the first and second strips. The first and third strips also join the toe and main body sections together without these sections overlapping.

  • Patent number: 4253247
Abstract: The specification discloses a hot gas distributor in a paper making machine. The distributor includes a pipe supported by end plates and supporting an elongated hood divided by partitions into a multitude of chambers. Centered in each chamber is a tubular nozzle extending through aligned holes in the pipe. Hot gas in the pipe flows into the nozzle through ports in the nozzle and down through the nozzle into the chamber and through a slotted arcuate plate forming the bottom of the chamber. Adapter blocks on the pipe support the nozzles and bonnets which support pneumatic actuators and through which connecting rods extend. A piston-like control plug or valve member on the rod closes the ports in nozzles to the extents that the pneumatic actuators are set to differentially dry a paper web just below the hood.
