  • Patent number: 5345058
Abstract: A system for negating remnant magnetic fields in a weld joint between two workpieces includes a controller and an electromagnet with two feet that form the pole pieces. The electromagnet feet are formed with surfaces that provide a substantial area for magnetic flux coupling with each workpiece on either side of the weld joint. Inside and outside surface pairs on the electromagnet feet permit effective placement of the electromagnet on the outside or inside of right angle corners formed by two workpieces to be welded. The electromagnet feet may be rotatively connected to the core to accommodate various workpiece configurations. The controller includes an autotransformer and two separate manually operable current controls.

  • Patent number: 5333913
Abstract: Galvanic isolation between two fluid-conducting members made of dissimilar materials is provided by a coupling pipe that separates the two members (e.g. a pipe and a valve). The coupling pipe includes a tubular section and two flange sections, which mate with the two fluid-conducting members. An insulating liner on the inside diameter of the tubular and flange sections of the coupling device extends the entire length of coupling pipe and is coextensive with flange insulators that separate the coupling pipe from the two fluid-conducting members. The substantial separation distance provided by the coupling pipe with continuous insulation prevents or significantly reduces electrochemical corrosion.

  • Patent number: 5331330
Abstract: A lightning detection and display system for aircraft is disclosed. A lightning detection system detects the bearing and distance of lightning strikes to the aircraft and the aircraft navigation system determines the aircraft position relative to earth. A computer then calculates the position of each strike relative to earth and displays the aircraft's position and lightning strike locations in their correct relative positions. While the aircraft moves, the computer periodically updates the display data to maintain an accurate depiction. The system stores a history of lightning strikes and displays such history in a time-lapse mode to represent the storm's trend in direction and magnitude.

  • Patent number: 5319686
Abstract: The spent nuclear fuel rods stored in a wet pit are extracted dry and transported dry to a transport container for dry transportation to a storage area or treatment center. The spent nuclear fuel rods are withdrawn from the wet pit, held within a cask that may be selectively closed at the bottom and transferred while the rod is dry after it is removed from the wet pit and then positioned over a dry container with an open top for a dry transfer of each of the rods to the container. Between the container and the cask is a closure that includes a shield plug and a shielding base that supports the shield plug and allows the shield plug to be moved on guide rails to the position above the open top of the container where the shield plug may then be raised allowing the shielding base to be moved out of position on the rails and the shield plug lowered to close off the container.

  • Patent number: 5286116
Abstract: An improved motor and bearing assembly is provided for use in an axial gap electric motor. The motor and bearing assembly includes a bearing support, bearing cones circumferentially mounted on the bearing support and a rotating bearing member. Each bearing cone has an axial conical surface at one end. The conical surfaces face each other to form a V-shaped cross-sectional groove. The rotating bearing member includes two rotating bearing rings abutting one another, each ring having an angularly disposed surface forming a V-shaped configuration complementary to the V-shaped groove of the bearing cones. The rotating bearing member provides axial and radial support of the rotor of the axial gap electric motor. Each of the bearing cones is axially movable relative to the bearing support, thereby permitting the stator-to-rotor gap and the bearing clearance to be adjusted after final assembly.
