Abstract: The yarn folding mechanism includes a pair of wires extended across a plurality of strands of yarn between two opposing surfaces, the wires being connected at each end to a rotationally movable member capable of moving the wires along separate, concentric, orbital paths. The orbital movement at the ends of the wires is translated into linear movement where the wires engage and fold the yarn by a cam surface that engages and guides the wires along their separate linear paths. The wires are connected at their ends to a coil spring so that the length of the wire between the members can vary, all the time maintaining a minimum tension in the wires. Each member is rotated by a reversible stepping motor that is programmed to move its wire along a predetermined orbital path.

Abstract: Closed loop propagation channels for magnetic bubbles are mutually exclusively accessed by means of two different sets of repeating sequences of discrete, pulsed magnetic drive field orientations. A closed loop bubble propagation circuit is driven by a repeating sequence of pulsed orientations in which a plurality of interlaced subsets of the sequence operate corresponding sections of the circuit. A closed loop zigzag circuit traversing sections of the loop parallel to the sides of an equilateral triangle is driven by a sequence of pulsed field orientations aligned respectively with the sides of the equilateral triangle. Continuous overlay circuits are introduced driven by sequences of discrete nonorthogonal, pulsed drive field orientations repetitively realigning with consecutive segments of the overlay circuit.

Abstract: In a submersible deep well pump unit, a plastic fluid intake base coupling the motor to the pump is placed in axial compression over its entire length by means of overlapping bolts respectively connecting the base to the motor and the pump, resulting in a low cost, corrosion and impact resistant pump-motor base.
Abstract: A rivet making machine and method in which a stationary set of angularly spaced head forming tools and a ram supported reciprocable set of body working tools are aligned at angularly spaced stations with each other and with a set of body dies carried by a rotatable indexing disc for successive positioning at the work stations. The body dies are independently movable axially of the indexing plate as necessary for cooperation of the head forming and body working tools on a blank carried by each body die. Blank cut-off is effected by a shearing die pair, one die pair being established at the end of each body die opposite the end thereof cooperating with the head forming tools. The other of the shearing die pair may be a fixed die in which relative movement of the shearing die pair is accomplished by indexing movement of the body dies. Alternatively, a shearing tool establishing the other die of the pair may be moved independently of body die indexing.
Abstract: A methacrylate is prepared by reacting methacrylic acid and an alcohol in vapor phase in the presence of a catalyst. The catalyst is a solid acid catalyst of silica-titania obtained by coprecipitating the same from an aqueous solution of a silicon and a titanium compound.
Abstract: A surgical gown is formed of a front panel of a single section of material which has two sleeves with the front portion of each one integral with the front panel so that no seams are located at the front of the gown. Each sleeve is formed of a single section of material which is folded and joined by a seam located along the upper edge of the sleeve. The gown further includes a back portion joined to the front panel and sleeves.
Abstract: A laser beam label reader head of single common axis type wherein light reflection coming from a laser-irradiated label along the axis of a scanning laser beam is diverted by an apertured mirror toward a photoelectric converter. The photoelectric converter is provided with means for removing and blocking incident general light coming from sources other than the laser-irradiated label to preclude influences by ambient light and improve S/N ratio.
Abstract: A technique for automatic detection of abnormalities, particularly pathology, in biomedical specimens. Light transmittance or reflectance data over a large number of wavelengths for numerous samples are correlated mathematically with conventional clinical results to select test wavelengths and constants for a correlation equation. Optical instrumentation with an analog or digital computer applies the resulting correlation equation to the spectral data on a given specimen at the test wavelengths to determine quantitatively the presence of the abnormality.
Abstract: A resin composition containing, as a radioactive ray-resistant stabilizer, an alkyl-substituted condensed tetracyclic hydrocarbon compound of the generic formula,[C.sub.16 H.sub.10 --R.sub.xwherein R denotes an alkyl group having one to four carbon atoms and x is an integer from 1 to 4, and when x is an integer of 2 or more, R may be the same or different.
Abstract: A cut-off stock feeding device for an automatic high speed cold nut former and more particularly a transfer feeding disc of intermittent rotary motion provided with indentations along the periphery thereof to receive and transfer cut-off blanks to successive discs in sequence.
Abstract: The total nitrogen content of a given specimen is determined by sealing the specimen in conjunction with copper oxide and calcium oxide in a tube under vacuum to form a sealed specimen tube, heating the sealed specimen tube and consequently causing the specimen therein to undergo combustion and generate nitrogen, subsequently placing in a vacuumized compartment the resultant sealed specimen tube now containing the generated nitrogen, breaking the tube therein so as to liberate the nitrogen from the tube interior into the compartment and measuring the volume and pressure of the nitrogen thus released in the compartment. The heavy nitrogen content of this specimen is determined by causing a part of the released nitrogen to be collected in a separate tube connected to the compartment in which nitrogen is generated. The tube in which the nitrogen gas is collected is sealed and subsequently the heavy nitrogen concentration in the sealed nitrogen tube is measured by an ordinary method.
Abstract: A feeding device for a high speed nut former machine is disclosed having a mechanism mounted on the machine and attached to a feeding plate capable of advancing in a linear fashion and returning in a motion in which the feeding plate is removed from a guide path. The feeding plate has a plurality of indentations of a configuration suitable for holding and conveying the nut blanks being formed along the guide path defined by guide plates between successive nut blank forming dies due to the motion of the mechanism attached to the feeding plate by causing the indentations to mesh with the blanks and to convey the blanks forward in a linear fashion, to next leave the feeding path, and to then return to the original position. In this manner, nut blanks are successively fed in an intermittent fashion from one die to the next in a plurality of steps.

Abstract: A machine for manufacturing herringbone-pleated structures of a type particularly suitable for use in cylindrical or flat filter elements. The machine includes consecutive feeding forming and bunching components by which a continuous band of flat sheet material, which may be pre-pleated longitudinally, is fed between a pair of endless forming assemblies which cooperate to form continuously a roughed-out shape of the final herringbone-pleated structure and which also advance to a bunching means positioned downstream from the forming assemblies. The bunching means operates to tighten up the folds of the roughed-out shape both longitudinally and transversely to provide the final structure.
Abstract: A high-speed intermittent rotary mechanism which includes two pairs of meshing driving gears and driven gears properly located respectively on driving and driven shafts with equal center-to-center distances. The driving gears are fixed on the driving shaft and the driven gears, which cooperate with an epicyclic train of gears, are pivotally mounted on the driven shaft by means of bearings. One or both pairs of the abovementioned meshing driving and driven gears are cam-shaped to transmit a smooth, accurate and intermittent rotary motion while in high speed operation.
