Abstract: Nitrodiphenyl ether derivatives of the general formula: ##STR1## wherein X stands for Cl, F, CH.sub.3 or CF.sub.3, n is an integer of 1-3 with the proviso that X may be the same or different when n is 2 or 3 but X.sub.n should not be 2,4-dichloro substituent,Are valuable as herbicides possessing an excellent herbicidal activity to a wide variety of undesirable weeds with an extremely low toxicity to useful crops. These nitrodiphenyl ether derivatives are prepared by hydroxyethylation of a compound of the above general formula except that a halogen atom is present in place of nitro group and subsequent halogenation of the .beta.-hydroxyethoxy group of the resulting compound.

Abstract: In a home fire extinguishing system, a garden hose is wound upon a reel mounted in a cabinet and is charged with water pressure from the house supply while wound on the reel. Water is fed to the reel through a rotary connector to a T-connector in the middle of the reel. Pipe sections extend from the side legs of the T-connector to the rotary connector and to a bearing mounted on the sidewall of the cabinet. The reel is thus rotatably mounted between the rotary connector and the bearing. Apertured round plates, which form the sides of the reel, are positioned over the pipe sections and are maintained in position on the pipe sections by means of bolts and a spacer positioned around the center leg of the T-connector.
Abstract: Methacrylic acid is manufactured by oxidative dehydrogenation of isobutyric acid in vapor phase in the presence of a supported catalyst containing a heteropolyacid and/or a reduced form of the heteropolyacid. A highly siliceous material having a high water absorbability is used as a carrier for the catalyst to improve the conversion rate and selectivity as well as the catalyst durability.
Abstract: An internal shoe drum brake comprises a pair of brake shoes, return spring means, service brake means, manually actuated auxiliary brake means including an actuating lever with a finger and an adjustable, in length, strut. The strut includes relatively rotatable screw threaded parts, i.e., a screw-threaded spindle slidably received in a tube member, a ratchet wheel in threaded engagement with the spindle and stopper held in yielding contact with the wheel, so that the strut is adjustable in length to adjust shoe clearances, a pivoted adjusting lever with a pawl tooth for effecting rotation of the ratchet wheel relative to the spindle upon brake application by the auxiliary brake means, and a prestressed coil torsion spring arranged to transmit forces to urge the adjusting lever in a direction to effect shoe clearance adjustment as required in response to operation of the auxiliary brake means.
Abstract: The disclosed photographic enlarger has a vertically movable head portion which includes a housing for a light source and a mounting for a negative which can be moved together in a horizontal plane by virtue of being suspended from a pair of carriage members which move horizontally, in linear paths, at right angles to each other.
Abstract: A fluidized-bed process and apparatus involving a vertical column containing a plurality of perforated trays, each tray having a weir disposed on its upper surface to divide that surface into first and second sections, each of which has a plurality of apertures. One section of each tray constitutes 80 to 95% of the total tray surface area. Location of the weir on successive trays alternates from side to side of the column to provide for cross-flow of the fluidized material on the trays.
Abstract: A concentrated proteinaceous food material which is suitable for the production of various cooking foodstuffs resembling those of livestock meat which has a texture like that of livestock meat and which shows an excellent water-retaining property is obtained by adding to marine animal meat an edible salt to adjust pH value of said meat in the range of from 6.5 to 7.7 and removing fats and water by use of a hydrophilic organic solvent. In one embodiment the pH of the marine animal meat is adjusted to a value in the range of from 7.2 to 7.7 by using, as the edible salt, a bicarbonate and, at the same time, mixing the meat with common salt or a sucrose fatty acid ester to convert the meat into a meat paste and subsequently removing fats and water by use of a hydrophilic organic solvent.

Abstract: Solid titanium trichloride in the form of fine granules having low aluminum compound content, which is suitable as a catalyst for polymerization of .alpha.-olefins, especially, propylene is obtained as a precipitate by heating liquefied titanium trichloride in the presence of a liberating agent, and separating the thus formed precipitate. The liquefied titanium trichloride is preferably prepared with an reducing titanium tetrachloride by organic aluminium compound in the presence of ether and hydrocarbon.
Abstract: A rotary pump for hot pitch, asphalt and like viscous solidifiable material, having a cylindrical outer extension on a packing gland to provide an elongated passage around a driving shaft, thereby allowing leaking material to solidify and be reduced into powder before falling from the outer end of the packing gland.
Abstract: A segment type, electric light figure indicator including a casing defining a plurality of flat compartments wherein at least one of the compartments is sub-divided into a plurality of sub-compartments. Each sub-compartment has a cross-section in a lateral plane in the shape of a triangle, the bases of triangles being substantially linearly aligned. At least one light source is mounted in each sub-compartment in the apex angle of the triangle. A cover plate covers the top opening of the casing and has a plurality of slots which permit light emanating from the light sources to shine through, at least one of the slots being located parallel to, in front of and coextensive with the aligned bases of the triangles of the sub-compartments. The sub-compartments each have a reflecting wall inclined to the cover plate at an angle of about 15.degree. to 75.degree., the inclined wall being located immediately behind the slot coextensive with the aligned triangle bases.

Abstract: A hydraulic control device for use with an automatic speed change gear device for a diesel engine using a torque convertor and an auxiliary speed change gear device. This hydraulic control device is provided with a back pressure control valve controlled by means of a throttle pressure developed in response to a throttle opening, wherein when the throttle opening is smaller than a given opening, a pressure oil having a pressure lower than a line pressure is introduced to an accumulator, and when the throttle opening is greater than the aforesaid given opening, a pressure oil having the same pressure level as that of said line pressure is fed to said accumulator to thereby obtain a desired engaging pressure for said automatic speed change gear device, thus effectively preventing a shock due to a change in speed. This device may also be used with a gasoline engine.
