  • Patent number: 4056680
Abstract: A d.c. high tension cable termination or joint and method of manufacturing same is described. The cable comprises an electric conductor, an electrically insulating layer which is concentrically applied over the conductor, and a semi-conductive layer which is concentrically applied over the insulating layer in close contact therewith. The cable termination or joint comprises an electrically insulating liquid impregnated into a portion of the semi-conductive layer which is located adjacent to an end of the insulating layer so as to present an electrical resistance which is higher than that of the non-impregnated portion of the semi-conductive layer but is lower than that of the insulating layer. The electric conductor is electrically connected with the end of that portion of the semi-conductive layer impregnated with the insulating liquid which is located nearer the conductor.

  • Patent number: 4053977
Abstract: A process for etching a thin film or foil of an electrically conductive resistive material, preferably an alloy predominantly comprising nickel and chromium, by electrolytic etching under conditions of electrochemical machining above Jacquet's plateau on the I.V. characteristic curve. The process is particularly suitable for manufacturing a planar electrical resistor having a high stability, a low temperature coefficient, and a high ohmic value despite the relatively low resistivity of the film or foil. The anode surface polarization is maintained substantially constant over the surface of the foil or film by removing the by-products of the etching process, i.e., gases, viscous layers and other impurities, by mechanical effects such as an electrolytic flow or mechanical vibration, or both together. These mechanical effects are carefully balanced against the applied potential values such that the rate of formation of the layers and gases at the anode is equal to their rate of removal.

  • Patent number: 4052763
Abstract: A rivet making machine and method in which a stationary set of angularly spaced head forming tools and a ram supported reciprocable set of body working tools are aligned at angularly spaced stations with each other and with a set of body dies carried by a rotatable indexing disc for successive positioning at the work stations. The body dies are independently movable axially of the indexing plate as necessary for cooperation of the head forming and body working tools on a blank carried by each body die. Blank cut-off is effected by a shearing die pair, one die pair being established at the end of each body die opposite the end thereof cooperating with the head forming tools. The other of the shearing die pair may be a fixed die in which relative movement of the shearing die pair is accomplished by indexing movement of the body dies. Alternatively, a shearing tool establishing the other die of the pair may be moved independently of body die indexing.

  • Patent number: 4051849
Abstract: In a catheter feeding system, a flexible resilient tube surrounds the catheter extending out of the catheter placement fixture. A portion of the tube is pleated adjacent to the fixture and the remainder of the tube is cylindrical. The catheter is fed forward by pinching the catheter through the tube between the thumb and forefinger behind the pleated portion and pushing the catheter forward into the fixture causing the tube to collapse axially in the pleated portion. A tubular jacket, which is also attached to the fixture, surrounds the pleated portion to keep it from wiggling out of axial alignment with the catheter during the feeding operation.

  • Patent number: 4049772
Abstract: A chromic acid solution can advantageously be recovered from the waste water by a process which comprises passing the waste water successively through an anion-exchange column system consisting of two or more serially interconnected anion-exchange resin columns each packed with an anion-exchange resin thereby deionizing the waste water, and, in the course of this deionization treatment, column backwashing the first anion-exchange resin when the anion-exchange capacity thereof has fallen to the point where the influent to and the effluent from the first anion-exchange resin column have become substantially equal in terms of chromate ion content. In the course of the regeneration treatment, the waste water is diverted to enter the anion-exchange column system through the second anion-exchange resin column. After the regeneration treatment has been completed, the first anion-exchange resin column is put back into service in the anion-exchange system so as to serve as the last stage.

  • Patent number: 4048717
Abstract: A method and apparatus are disclosed for assembling a rotor mounted on a shaft and a plurality of bearing support members, each of which includes bearings, within an encapsulated sleeve in precise axial alignment for use in a wet motor circulator. A curable adhesive is applied to a predetermined location on the interior surface of the sleeve determined by the prospective location of a bearing support member therein. The bearing support members are positioned on the shaft on each side of the rotor, and the rotor and bearing support members are fixed as a subassembly in a curing fixture adapted to maintain alignment of the rotor with each of the support members. A curable adhesive is applied to the other bearing support member and the subassembly is axially aligned relative to the sleeve on a common axis in an assembly fixture.

  • Patent number: 4049235
Abstract: A double-acting spool-type hydraulic control valve having a spring centered spool is described, the spool centering spring being arranged in conventional manner between two spring seats which bear in opposite directions on an end portion of the spool within a cover secured to one end face of the valve body. The spool is capable of a degree of over-travel beyond each of the maximum flow positions, which over-travel is resisted by an auxiliary spring arranged within the centering spring. Ball-and-recess type detent elements are provided for holding the spool at either of the maximum flow positions, these detent elements being arranged at the free end of the centering spring cover. The recessed detent element is shiftable on the spool axis between stops so that the spool can shift to a detented maximum flow position after having been forced to over-travel to permit registration between ball and recess.

  • Patent number: 4049548
Abstract: For on-site, continuous, bulk water purification, a dual-monitored, two-pass system employs two successive banks of mixed-bed, strong-based resin cylinders. Raw water first flows down through a bank of primary cylinders in parallel. The outlets of the primary cylinders are connected in parallel via an overhead carry-over pipe to a smaller bank of polisher cylinders whose outlets are connected in parallel via a final filter to a discharge outlet. Probes monitoring the concentration of impurities are located in the carry-over pipe and following the final filter. The efficient arrangement of cylinders in a van allows easy replacement of exhausted cylinders without interrupting water treatment.

  • Patent number: 4047822
Abstract: A fitting for detachably interconnecting two walls of an item of furniture at an angle to one another. The fitting comprises a bearing body locatable in one wall, which body has two bores formed therein, a rotatable torsion bolt being located in one bore and a portion of a tightening bolt in the other bore. On its external surface the torsion bolt is grooved. The two bores communicate with one another. In use, the head of the tightening bolt engages with the groove in the torsion bolt, and the opposed end of the tightening bolt engages in the other wall whereby rotation of the torsion bolt locks the tightening bolt in position and causes said walls to be interconnected.
