  • Patent number: 6072174
Abstract: A method of magneto-optically modulating light comprises the steps of linearly polarizing the light on its transmission path, and placing a magneto-optic effect element on the transmission path of the polarized light with the spontaneous magnetization direction of the magneto-optic effect element being substantially parallel with the transmission path. The plane of polarization of the polarized light is rotated about the transmission path in the absence of the magnetic field applied to the magneto-optic effect element having the polarized light pass therethrough. The method further comprises the step of applying the magnetic field to the magneto-optic effect element with its internal magnetization being oriented in a direction perpendicular to the transmission path. The plane of polarization of the polarized light is maintained in its initial state in the presence of the magnetic field applied to the magneto-optic effect element having the polarized light pass therethrough.

  • Patent number: 6069694
Abstract: In a flow cell, a flow cell body defines a fluid passageway. Opposed fiber optic cable assemblies with sapphire windows project into the fluid passageway. The fiber optic cable assemblies are axially adjustable in position to provide a capability of varying the path length for the light beam passing between the sapphire windows of the fiber optic cable assemblies in the fluid flowing in the fluid flow path. The path length is precisely settable by means of a feeler gauge which is inserted in a position between the windows of the fiber optic cable assemblies by means of a fixture inserted into the flow path. The fixture is in two parts which engage the fiber optic cable assemblies from opposite ends of the flow path and the fixture is provided with an oblong slot to properly orient the feeler gauge in the flow path between the fiber optic cable assemblies.

  • Patent number: 6049913
Abstract: A waterproof outer garment comprises one piece of material wrappable around the wearer between the knees and the back, with edges overlapping and securable to one another by quick locking and quick release fasteners. The edges are securable in varying amounts of overlap to adjust the garment to the size of the wearer, and suspenders prevent the garment slipping down on the wearer. In one embodiment, the entire garment is made from a material impervious to the ingress of water. In another embodiment, portions of the garment which are not subject to contact under pressure with snow and water are made of a lighter weight material which need not be waterproof. Garments according to the present invention which are made partly from non-waterproof material can be made lighter, more comfortable and perhaps more stylish than garments made entirely from waterproof material.

  • Patent number: 6050257
Abstract: An open grill assembly, with a radiant heating sheet, can be assembled together into a rigid grill, with rods forming a frame supporting the radiant sheet and the grid in a spaced apart relationship. The components can be disassembled into a compact bundle, preferably a flat bundle. When assembled, in a preferred embodiment, the radiant heating sheet is adapted to rest on the top of the burner, so that the rods forming the frame need not touch the ground, allowing a single, economical design to be used with most, and perhaps all, commercially available burners. In operation, the burner heats the radiant heating sheet and radiant heat from the sheet cooks food on the grid.
