  • Patent number: 7144210
Abstract: A rotary tool holder includes a shank having a flange, a tapered outer surface, and front and rear contact portions. The tapered outer surface corresponds to the tapered bore of a spindle, and flexible circular cantilevers are provided at one or both contact portions such that a free end of the cantilevers expands radially due to centrifugal force to maintain contact with the tapered bore. The shank can be formed from an inner member and a sleeve disposed thereover, in which portions of the sleeve form the circular cantilevers. The circular cantilevers can also be formed by a cavity created in the shank. Alternatively, instead of circular cantilevers, the shank of the tool holder can have a taper which is optimized for a certain speed, wherein the taper of the shank has a first taper at rest and a different, optimized taper at a desired speed.

  • Patent number: 7144205
Abstract: An insert retention screw has a head with a radius that is a sufficient size to fit within a mounting hole of a cutting insert and seat within a seating plane within the mounting hole that is generally perpendicular to the axis of the insert when the screw is at an angle in a range of about 0–15 degrees. The retention screw is provided for holding a cutting insert in the pocket of a tool body. The pocket is partially defined by a floor and a seating surface. A threaded hole is at an angle that is taken with reference to the pocket floor. The insert has a mounting hole passing therethrough. The retention screw passes through the mounting hole and threads into the threaded hole so as to draw the insert against the seating surface.

  • Patent number: 7134811
Abstract: An end mill type rotary cutting tool and associated cutting inserts that collectively compensate for radial pocket runout, thereby eliminating overlap marks in a machined work piece. The tool has pockets arrayed in helical flutes such that after one insert has abraded the work piece, a subsequent flute makes an overlapping pass. The inserts are so mounted in the cutting tool and have curved corners configured such that no degree of pocket runout due to manufacturing tolerances will cause any portion of the cutting edge of any insert to form an incuse cut in the work piece which penetrates the machined surface by more than the manufacturing tolerance. Thus overlap of inserts eliminate outward projections in the machined work piece and dimensions and configuration of the inserts and their pockets eliminate inward gouges, thereby eliminating visible overlap marks in the work piece.

  • Patent number: 7118313
Abstract: A cutting die head that can be set and/or reset without an external mechanism. To this end, the die head includes a die body including a plurality of radially adjustable blocks, each block having a cutter mounted thereon and a radially outwardly facing cam surface. A sleeve surrounds the die body and has an inner surface. The inner surface has a plurality of cam surfaces arranged to communicate with the cam surfaces of the blocks such that axial movement of the sleeve results in radial movement of the blocks. In one embodiment the sleeve is caused to move axially by fluid pressure.

  • Patent number: 7104171
Abstract: A toolholder has a conventional square shank body with a pocket extending downwardly from the top surface of the body so that the cutting tip of an insert mounted within the pocket is positioned below the top surface of the square shank body. This permits the pocket to have a back wall through which coolant may be introduced and directed against the cutting insert. Typically, the cutting tip of a conventional square shank toolholder is aligned with the top surface of the toolholder. Additionally, a toolholder assembly is disclosed which includes a plurality of such toolholders.

  • Patent number: 7089838
Abstract: A zero centerline toolholder assembly includes a cutting insert mounted to a toolholder. The center, RC, of the nose radius of the cutting insert is aligned with or lies on a centerline, LT, of the toolholder. The centerline, LT, of the toolholder may be also aligned with a rotational axis, CT2, of a tool spindle. The tool spindle is tilted at an angle with respect to an axis, P, that is substantially perpendicular to a longitudinal axis, LW, of a work piece. As a result of the zero centerline configuration, the radial component of the torque load on the toolholder is virtually eliminated. In addition, the toolholder assembly has a shorter tool length, thereby reducing deflection load on the toolholder.
