  • Patent number: 6459271
Abstract: Open circuit faults in a cable are located by applying a step function DC voltage to one end of a conductor along the cable, for example the metallic shield along a fibre optic cable. The DC current along the conductor is measured over a sampling period and integrated to determine the capacitive charge on the cable. The distance between the end of the conductor and the open circuit fault is computed from the calculated charge and the known capacitance per unit length of the conductor. The DC current in the conductor is measured by sampling the current at a predetermined sampling frequency. The sampling frequency is preferably an integral multiple of the local AC mains power frequency, either 60 Hz or 50 Hz to eliminate the effect of induced AC voltages in the calculations.

  • Patent number: 6457955
Abstract: A composite heat dissipation fan, including an impeller having first blades, and the first blades having a periphery combined with second blades for creating a side directed wind supply. The impeller is provided with a magnet ring which is energized with the stator coils of the base plate, so that the impeller is induced to rotate about the rotation shaft of the base plate. The first blades draw the ambient cold air through the wind inlet opening, and the wind outlet opening of the base plate drains the wind outward. The second blades uses part of the cold air to drain wind sideward, thereby providing a multi-directional wind draining effect so as to increase the heat dissipation efficiency.

  • Patent number: 6454206
Abstract: A damping apparatus for damping vibrations in a vibrating system including a piston which is reciprocally movable in a fluid filled chamber, piston movement in either direction of movement being resisted by fluid pressure in the chamber behind the piston, which resistance provides damping forces which act to oppose piston movement, the piston being connected to one component of the vibrating system and the chamber being connected to a second component of the vibrating system, characterised in that structure is provided to relieve the fluid pressure behind the piston to allow substantially unopposed piston movement in the chamber without damping forces being provided, during piston movements which occur in response to vibrations in the vibrating system at frequencies other than a fundamental frequency which the damping apparatus primarily is intended to damp.

  • Patent number: 6453643
Abstract: In wrapping palletized loads with stretchable film having an elastic memory, when the wrapping is about completed, a distancing device is placed close to the wrapped load on which the last wrapping turn rests, so that a pocket is formed in the turn. The carriage of the wrapping machine is stopped in a predetermined angular position and the film tail is aligned and placed in a main clamp and a secondary clamp. Subsequently, a cutting device cuts the film between the two clamps, and the main clamp holding the leading end coming from the wrapping machine carriage moves backward at rest. The other clamp holding the tail end is introduced into the pocket and then opens and is drawn out from the pocket together with the distancing device , so that the wrapping tail gets caught and blocked by friction in the last turn which shrinks flat.

  • Patent number: 6454101
Abstract: An endless conveyor for conveying substantially rotationally-symmetrical products, comprising at least one endless conveying element and a number of transverse elements extending substantially perpendicularly to a conveying direction. At least one hourglass-shaped roller is mounted on each transverse element. The mutual distance between the successive transverse elements in a first path part is smaller than in a second path part. A first control device is provided for effecting an increase of distance between the transverse elements at a first transition from the first to the second path part. A second control device is provided for effecting a decrease of distance between the transverse elements at a second transition from the second to the first path part. A rotationally-symmetrical support element is movable, in a portion of the second path, between each pair of successive hourglass-shaped rollers for supporting the products to be conveyed.

  • Patent number: 6450236
Abstract: A method of ascending casting in a casting cavity where filling from the bottom results in a region of reduced pressure formed during the cooling in which solidification can be expected to take place last. The region is post-fed with molten material from a shortest possible feeding duct. By doing this, the consumption of casting metal is reduced, because it is no longer necessary to use a surplus of molten material to keep the bottom ingate open for feeding purposes and the consumption of mold material is also reduced because it is no longer necessary to adapt the mold to accommodate surplus molten material.

  • Patent number: 6451537
Abstract: In accordance with this invention, there is provided a DNA sequence which can encode an enzyme protein functioning as the rice dihydrodipicolinate synthase (DHDPS). One example of the DNA sequence according to this invention is the DNA having the nucleotide sequence shown in SEQ ID No. 1 of Sequence Listing. Additionally, this invention provides the DNA having the nucleotide sequence of SEQ ID No. 5, as well as the DNA having the nucleotide sequence of SEQ ID No. 7 of Sequence Listing, as the DNA which is capable of encoding the protein having the DHDPS activity. When cultivation is made of the plant cells in which there has been introduced a recombinant vector having carried therein a DNA fragment containing the DNA of this invention as inserted at downstream of the promoter of said recombinant vector, it is feasible to regenerate from said plant cells a transgenic plant having a high lysine content.
