  • Patent number: 4411726
Abstract: A composite container is disclosed having a synthetic plastic end closure member spin-bonded to the thermoplastic synthetic plastic inner liner layer of a composite container body wall. The synthetic plastic end closure member includes annular downwardly depending inner fin and outer chime portions which are concentrically spaced to define therebetween an annular groove. One of the body and end members is rotated relative to the other member when they are in spaced vertical alignment, whereupon the members are axially displaced together to wedge the upper end of the body member into the annular groove of the end closure member. During this spin bonding process, the fin portion of the end closure member is supported against radial inward deflection, whereby the spinning frictional engagement between the fin portion of the end closure member and the inner liner layer of the body member causes softening and subsequent bonding of the fin portion to the inner liner layer.

  • Patent number: 4410031
Abstract: A latent heat accumulator is disclosed including an upright container hav, in a major volume first section, a latent heat storage medium, and a passage for a heat exchange medium extending through the charge in the first section. The passage is of the type of a conduit provided with intake openings at different levels. The flow of heat exchange medium through the conduit generates low pressure at the intake openings with the result that a part of the surrounding charge of the heat storage medium is drawn into the conduit for thorough intermixing and heat transfer. The intake openings are preferably protected to prevent large solidified particles of the heat storage medium from blocking the openings or from entering the conduit. The invention improves the heat transfer capacity and reduces the charge of the heat storage medium entering the associated heat exchange circulation system while retaining a relatively simple structure of the accumulator.

  • Patent number: 4409958
Abstract: A method and apparatus for obtaining water at a desired temperature from a generally vertical tank such as a water heater is disclosed, characterized in that water is drawn from the tank at a plurality of spaced vertical points where the water temperature has the desired temperature. The tank contains a quantity of water having a variable non-uniform temperature. A vertical pipe open at its upper and lower ends is centrally arranged within the tank, the lower end of the pipe extending through the bottom of the tank to define a water outlet. A plurality of normally closed, temperature responsive valves are connected with the pipe in vertically spaced relation. Each of the valves is operable when the water adjacent thereto has a predetermined temperature to deliver that water to the pipe, whereby the water at the outlet will have the predetermined temperature.

  • Patent number: 4408226
Abstract: Test apparatus for monitoring transmissions contained in a broad band television video signal is disclosed including a sampling device operating at an integer multiple of the digital bit rate which is above the Nyguist level and a temporary storage device for storing the sample produced by the sampling device. A microprocessor is used to compute from the stored samples a value of a parameter of the digital transmission and to control the sampling device whereby the sample can be taken at appropriate points for the parameter to be tested. To that end, conversion means are provided for converting the stored samples so as to recreate the input digital transmission for resampling at the points determined by the microprocessor.

  • Patent number: 4392019
Abstract: A system for surround sound utilizes three audio channels two of which are either in phase of 180.degree. out of phase for all angles of elevation and azimuth of the incident sound and which can be decoded to give good quality stereo reception. The third channel contains the signal indicative of the "front-back" information and this signal is chosen to yield the best quality of surround sound reception consistent with minimum interference to the quality of mono and stereo reception for a given type or range of program material. Preferably, the third channel is phase shifted by 90.degree. with respect to the phase of the other two channels. The three audio channels can be derived directly from three directional microphones or can be derived from the Ambisonics `B` format in which case an encoding matrix of the following form is used: ##EQU1## where .SIGMA., .DELTA. and T are the signals in the three audio channels and W, X and Y are the input signals to the encoding matrix.

  • Patent number: 4384527
Abstract: An explosive body having an intensified detonation pressure is disclosed, characterized in that the body includes a main explosive charge and an auxiliary explosive charge. A material is arranged between the charges for transmitting the impact wave from the detonating auxiliary charge to the main charge. Detonation of the main charge is delayed following detonation of the auxiliary charge, whereby the impact wave of the auxiliary charge compresses the explosive of the main charge. Thus, the intensity of the resulting detonation pressure of the main charge is increased.
