  • Patent number: 4354764
Abstract: A specimen testing apparatus is disclosed, including a sensing device for engaging a specimen mounted on a support, an electrical measuring system associated with the sensing device for producing an electrical signal that is a function of a variation in a physical characteristic of the specimen as determined by the sensing device, and an electromagnetic compensation system for applying a compensating force to the sensing device. In one operating condition (as, for example, when the thermal expansion properties of the specimen are being tested), the compensation system is operable to apply to the sensing device a force compensating for the weight of the sensing device, thereby to cause the sensing device to rest upon the specimen in a weightless force-free manner. Alternately, the compensation system may be operable to apply to the sensing device a supplemental force in the compressive stressing condition, as might be desired when penetration tests are to be conducted on the specimen.

  • Patent number: 4355353
Abstract: A forward converter circuit (FIG. 1) is provided with a transformer reset sensing circuit (FIG. 2) whereby base drive to the switching transistor TR1 is inhibited until after reset of the transformer T1. The reset sensing circuit includes a sensing winding T1d provided on the transformer for sensing the waveform at the primary winding T1a, a comparator IC1 and diodes D5, D4 connected in such a way that one input of the comparator is high when the waveform changes in one direction, and the other input of the comparator is high when the waveform changes in the other direction. The output of the comparator inhibits switching of the transistor before reset and thus allows the use of a maximum switching duty cycle of 50% without risk of transformer saturation.

  • Patent number: 4353761
Abstract: A composite container is disclosed having a synthetic plastic end closure member spin-bonded to the thermoplastic synthetic plastic inner liner layer of a composite container body wall. The synthetic plastic end closure member includes annular downwardly depending inner fin and outer chime portions which are concentrically spaced to define therebetween an annular groove. One of the body and end members is rotated relative to the other member when they are in spaced vertical alignment, whereupon the members are axially displaced together to wedge the upper end of the body member into the annular groove of the end closure member. During this spin bonding process, the fin portion of the end closure member is supported against radial inward deflection, whereby the spinning frictional engagement between the fin portion of the end closure member and the inner liner layer of the body member causes softening and subsequent bonding of the fin portion to the inner liner layer.

  • Patent number: 4349008
Abstract: Apparatus for producing spark ignition of an internal combustion engine in which sparks at the spark plugs are initiated by a high voltage pulse of typically 20 KV and are sustained thereafter by a d.c. voltage of typically 3 KV. In one embodiment the d.c. voltage is produced from a 12 volt supply by a d.c. to d.c. converter, the converter being adapted to produce a substantially constant voltage irrespective of the current drain produced by the spark, within given limits. The converter is also adapted to shut down its operation in the event of an output short circuit. The converter is disclosed connected to a lean burn PROCO engine with the result that only one spark plug per cylinder is required. In an alternative embodiment the d.c. sustaining voltage is derived directly from a conventional alternator driven by the engine.

  • Patent number: 4337838
Abstract: An improved weighing apparatus of the electromagnetic load compensation type is disclosed, characterized by the provision of a stationary permanent magnet system including two oppositely arranged pairs of spaced parallel flat magnet members that cooperate to define a common air gap. The compensation current coil, which is connected for movement with the movable load-receiving member, is of a flat annular configuration and is contained in the plane of the air gap extending between the magnet members of each pair. The magnet members of one pair are magnetized oppositely from those of the other pair, whereby the magnetic field established across the portion of the air gap between the permanent magnet members of one pair is of a direction opposite that established between the permanent magnet members of the other pair. Consequently, not only can the compensation current for a desired compensation force effect be reduced, but also, the manufacture of the permanent magnet system is greatly simplified.

  • Patent number: 4336122
Abstract: An electrolysis apparatus is disclosed and comprises a plurality of cells connected in series both on the current flow path (an electrical course being connected across the end ones of the electrodes) and the electrolyte/gas flow path (electrolyte entering one end cell through one end electrode and gas issuing from the other end cell through the other end electrode), the cells including at least one series of gas generating cells followed by at least one cooling cell. The end electrodes of a series of cells may be short circuited so that these cells become cooling cells because they are not active to generate gas and instead the electrolyte and gas flowing through them undergoes cooling. The apparatus may be arranged for generating detonating gas or may be modified for generating oxygen and hydrogen at separate outlets.
