The amount of water resistance being imposed is adjustable. In another embodiment, a paddle wheel is employed with blades along the outer periphery being adjustable to vary the amount of water resistance.
Abstract: A guttered paving block which can interlock with identical paving blocks in only one way to simply the assembly of a ground cover consisting of a square narrow waisted portion and a pair of oppositely situated extended head portions with pointed ends. The narrow waist portion makes the block easy to pick up with one hand. Dummy grooves which are parallel are provided to facilitate the manufacture of the block. Another embodiment is designed to permit a large number of patterns when assembled. It consists of a rectangular portion with a smaller square portion appended to one side of the rectangular portion.
Abstract: A light emitting panel formed by a single layer of parallel and contiguously arranged clad optical fibers supplied with light from a source at one end of the panel. The fibers are cemented together and the cladding is removed from the light emitting surface of the panel. In one embodiment, each fiber is looped at the end of the panel remote from the source of light so that both ends of each fiber is connected to the source of light.
Abstract: A pair of chaps for use in riding a saddled horse comprising a sheet of material made from neoprene between 1/8 and 1/4 inch in thickness in which VELCRO strips are used on the leg portions to wrap around each leg and VELCRO strips are employed on the waist band. Suede strips on the legs facing the saddle are employed to resist rubbing against the saddle. The waist band is also lined with suede.
Abstract: A vial containing liquid contents constructed so as to permit transfer of its contents to a syringe without the use of a needle with the syringe. One embodiment employs rotation of a cap to align openings avoiding the use of a needle. In another embodiment, there is provided mounted within apparatus located on the mouth of the vial a needle which is built in to the apparatus. The syringe engages the needle which is then depressed to puncture the cork sealing the vial, the vial is then inverted, and the contents drained into the syringe. The needle is withdrawn thereby resealing the contents of the vial, and the needle remains with the vial.
Abstract: Apparatus and method for automatically irrigating and fertilizing a plurality of zones in a lawn and other botanical systems. A conventional underground sprinkler system may be employed having a source of liquefied fertilizer to be inserted into the main water supply or any of the zonal lines when water is being delivered to one of the zones. A clock is used to establish a maximum duration of fertilizer delivery. Normalizing timers are employed to restrict the flow of fertilizer as a fraction of the maximum duration depending on which zone is being irrigated.
Abstract: A snowshoe constructed of a solid piece of rigid material having a cross brace for pivotally supporting a binding for the boot of the wearer. An opening forward of the cross brace permits the toe of the boot to pivot downwardly. The snowshoe is provided with braces of L-shaped construction and openings to reduce weight. Studs may be employed for traction on hardpacked snow and ice. The solid piece making up the platform of the shoe is made from a light weight rigid plastic material such as polypropylene.
Abstract: A door locking mechanism for a door which is mounted on the inside of a door which can be hung to open either inwardly or outwardly. The mechanism consists of a lever arm pivotally mounted connected at its ends to extended members which at their opposite ends are connected to lock bolts. The frame supporting the door is equipped with members to receive the bolts when the door is locked. The outside of the door is provided with a lock to move the bolts out or in to lock or unlock the door. The inside of the door is provided with a knob to effect the movement of the bolts.
Abstract: A device for securing a Chevrolet rally cap to the wheel of an automotive vehicle to deter the theft of the cap. The device is completely hidden from view and consists of a ring which attaches to the inside of the rally cap, cables extending from said ring having washers at the other end. The cables are of sufficient length to permit the washers to be mounted on the wheel stud lugs while the ring is attached to the rally cap. After the washers are mounted then the rally cap is mounted on the wheel rim in conventional fashion, by frictional engagement. The cables remain nested within the cap and are not visible. If the rally cap is pried loose in an attempt to steal it, the cables will prevent the theft and the thief will not be able to remove the cap without finding out first how the cap is restrained and then obtaining a tool to release the cap. This effectively acts as a deterrent to casual thievery.
Abstract: A protective garment for use by a person holding an infant comprising a back portion which is of waist length to permit the person to sit comfortably. The garment has a front portion of thigh length to protect the clothing of the person against being soiled by any spitting up of the infant. The two portions are joined along one vertical edge each so that the front portion can be wrapped around the front of the person. The front portion has a flap which goes over the opposite shoulder of the person and uses a Velcro type connection to hold it in place. Short puffy sleeves are employed at the ends of the shoulders to provide support for the head of the infant.
Abstract: Method and apparatus for the real time detection of the formation of ice on a surface in which a sensor having spaced electrodes along the surface is embedded in the surface for which detection is to be provided. Resistance between the electrodes is monitored and electrode temperature is monitored. When a sharp rise in resistance on the surface due to the presence of ice is detected at the same time that the surface temperature is at or below the freezing temperature of water, then a computer provides a signal to indicate the formation of ice.
Abstract: A combined needle and catheter assembly comprising a body in which is provided a plunger having the needle at one end with the catheter enclosing said needle with the tip exposed. A pusher is provided to move the plunger to the proximate end of the body to expose the needle with catheter and to lock the plunger in place against a spring which biases the plunger toward the distal position in the body. After use of the needle with the catheter moved into place, a release is employed to permit the plunger with needle to be driven back into the body, permitting the catheter to be separated from the body and ready for use.
Abstract: Safety restraining apparatus for a model airplane under power comprising an inverted U-shaped member having a hinged member mounted on the top. The hinged member consists of a pair of spaced arms and legs which limit motion of the hinged member to one direction when the U-shaped member is inserted into the ground. The aircraft with propeller turning is restrained by the hinged member coming into contact with the horizontal stabilizers. The aircraft is released for take off by withdrawing the airplane permitting the hinged member to drop to ground under gravity to be out of the way. One advantage of this invention is that the arms drop out of the way when the airplane is withdrawn. Another advantage of this design is that once the device is mounted in the ground it can be reused any number of times without removing it from the ground. Thus, for a full day of flying, for example, the device is installed, used repeatedly, and then removed when the equipment is to be put away and the area is left.
Abstract: A rear end collision avoidance system utilizing a plurality of lamps facing the rear of the vehicle and a deceleration measuring device to sequence said lights so as to indicate the changes in speed of said vehicle. The system is actuated when the brake in the vehicle is applied. The measuring device utilizes a circular disk which is free to roll in a arc shaped slot.
