  • Patent number: 5632908
Abstract: An optical fiber support member is made by forming on a monocrystalline silicon substrate member (26) a first mask layer (27) of, e.g., silicon dioxide. The first mask layer is masked and etched to a first depth to define a pattern of first (29) and second (30) features, the first features defining the locations of optical fiber support grooves (15), and the second features defining the locations of support member reference surfaces (17, 19). Next, only the second features are etched to a second depth deeper than the first depth. Finally, the first and second features are simultaneously etched into the substrate such that the second features are etched to a greater depth than the first features. By defining the first and second features simultaneously in a single mask and etch step, one can assure the final precise alignment of etched V-grooves to etched reference surfaces.

  • Patent number: 5623321
Abstract: A circuit for cutting off power to selected components in a network which requires that backup power be supplied to other components. A monitoring signal is generated and combined with the power coupled to the components. A signal detector in the selected components determines the absence of the monitoring signal which is indicative of a commercial power outage. The signal detector then activates a cutoff mechanism which cuts off a portion of the component from the backup power without obstructing the flow of power and of the monitoring signal to the output of the component so power may be used by other downstream components.

  • Patent number: 5614939
Abstract: Disclosed is a circuit and system for preventing tampering with services provided in a broadband transmission network. A coaxial relay is coupled between a cable providing signals in the network and the drop cable to the customer's premises. The coil which operates the relay is coupled to the shield conductor of the drop cable and to a source of dc potential. As long as a current flows through the shield portion and the coil, the customer is connected to the network through the relay. If current stops, as when the customer disconnects the drop cable, the customer is disconnected from the network.

  • Patent number: 5568684
Abstract: An electronic device (12, 13) is substantially enclosed by a fluid encapsulant (17). The fluid encapsulant consists essentially of a silicone resin and a catalyst selected from the group consisting of platinum and tin. The silicone resin is selected from the group consisting of polydimethlysiloxane, polymethylphenylsiloxane, polydimethyldiphenylsiloxane, and mixtures thereof. Such silicone resins comprise molecules terminating in vinyl components and hydride components. The molar ratio of vinyl components to hydride components is maintained within the range of five to twenty. As will be explained more fully later, this ratio of vinyl components to hydride components assures that the resin will remain substantially a liquid even after cure, due to limited cross-linking or polymerization during the cure. The electronic device is contained within a container (16) having a sealed cover (18) for containing the liquid encapsulant during the operation of the electronic device.
