  • Patent number: 4451541
Abstract: A zinc-based composition comprising from 0.01 to 5 percent lead and 0.01 to 20 percent tin, preferably minor amounts of chromium and/or titanium and/or nickel and with the balance being zinc is provided. A minor amount of copper may also be present. The composition is particularly useful for joining copper and copper alloys because it will wet and readily flow on the copper or copper alloy surfaces. It can be used with or without a flux. It has reduced dissolving action on the copper and copper alloys due to its reduced reactivity with them. It also has improved conductivity vis-a-vis conventional lead-tin and lead-tin-silver solders.

  • Patent number: 4449635
Abstract: A lift crane having a separated transporter-supported front ring segment and a transporter-supported rear works including a counterweight. The front ring segment is connected by a frame element to the rear works and supports a carrier which pivotally mounts a forwardly-inclined boom and a rearwardly-inclined mast. Movement of the carrier across the front ring segment is permitted by two equal-length links pivotally connected to opposite sides of the carrier and the respective opposite sides of a horizontal bracket mounted on the frame element. The center of rotation of the carrier as it traverses the front ring segment is substantially coincident with the imaginary vertex of a truncated isosceles triangle formed by the carrier and lines running axially along the links. When the carrier is centered on the front ring segment, the center of rotation is also substantially coincident with a vertical axis running through the rearward-most point of the mast.

  • Patent number: 4448430
Abstract: Sealing strips, such as for sealing around door openings in vehicle bodies, for example. The sealing strip comprises a hollow tubular soft sealing section which is supported around the door opening by means of a channel-shaped gripping section. In order to support the sealing section at positions around the opening where the sealing strip has to be curved or bent, lengths of soft flexible material of generally rectangular cross-section are positioned within the hollow interior of the sealing section at the appropriate positions. Each such length is a relatively loose fit within the hollow interior of the sealing section and is held in position by means of adhesive. The lengths of the soft flexible material prevent partial "collapse" or distortion of the sealing section at the bends or curves, but because they do not fill the hollow interior of the sealing section, they do not impair its compressibility in the sealing direction.

  • Patent number: 4449111
Abstract: A transformer has an insulator interposed between respective primary and secondary coils wound on a coil bobbin which has an axial winding part and opposing radially extending flanges. The insulator is made from a continuous sheet of material which is corrugated to provide an insulating base having a width larger than the width of the winding part of the coil bobbin and from a continuous, plastic insulating sheet member having substantially the same width as the winding part. The corrugated insulated base material and insulating sheet member are wound between the primary coil and the secondary coil and the corrugated insulating base is bent at both side edges to be L-shaped to intimately fit to the inner surface of the flanges of the coil bobbin so as to provide an insulator which positively prevents coil wire at each end portion of the coil from dropping out of alignment with respective coil turns.

  • Patent number: 4447793
Abstract: An actuator has a rotor with permanently magnetized North and South poles. A housing supports three pole members having respective coils and pole pieces. The first pole piece is always a North pole but the coils on the second and third pole pieces are arranged such that each can be of either polarity with the other simultaneously being of the opposite polarity. The rotor therefore has two stable positions, one when the second pole piece is a North pole and the third pole piece is a South pole and the other being 120.degree. from this position in the clockwise direction (when the second pole piece is a South pole and the third pole piece is a North pole). The rotor movement may however be stopped 15.degree. short of each such position by mechanical detents, so as to limit the maximum angular movement to 90.degree.. The actuator may be used to drive a switchable microwave coupling arrangement.

  • Patent number: 4446817
Abstract: Substrates on which vapor deposition is to take place are mounted on the outside of a generally bell-shaped susceptor which is itself mounted immediately outside a similarly shaped shield which is transparent to infra-red radiation. Infra-red lamps are mounted within the shield and the radiant heat from them passes through the shield and heats the substrates through the susceptor. An outer, opaque, shield defines an annular gas passage through which reactant gases pass over the heated substrate to cause vapor deposition thereon. Purging gas may be passed between the transparent shield and the susceptor. The lamps and the susceptor may be relatively rotated. The arrangement substantially eliminates the possibility of the reactant gas causing deposition on the transparent shield which would interfere with the passage of radiant heat to the susceptor and the substrate.

  • Patent number: 4446814
Abstract: A device for application of lacquer or the like to a sheet in a printing press. The lacquer is applied by an applicator cylinder having an associated applicator roller. Lacquer is fed from a fountain having a fountain roller which is slowly driven, the lacquer being transferred from the fountain roller to the applicator roller either directly or through intermediate rollers to form a nip in which the lacquer tends to build up. The amount of lacquer transferred by the fountain roller per unit time is determined by a metering roller which engages the fountain roller. A sensing device located at the nip senses the level of lacquer buildup and produces an output signal upon departure of the building from an optimum level. In one embodiment of the invention the output signal is utilized to bring about a corrective adjustment in the position of the metering roller so that the buildup at the nip tends to be restored to optimum level.

  • Patent number: 4446785
Abstract: A clutch and brake system for starting and stopping a power press uses hydraulically actuated brake and clutch mechanisms. To start the press, the brake is hydraulically released while the clutch is hydraulically engaged at a predetermined intermediate torque level which is less than the full clutch torque level. The clutch is maintained at that intermediate torque level until the present drive shaft has attained its substantially full speed, and is then increased to the full clutch torque level. To stop the press, the clutch is hydraulically disengaged while the brake is hydraulically engaged at a predetermined intermediate torque level which is less than the full brake torque level. The brake is maintained at this intermediate torque level until the press drive shaft has substantially stopped, at which time the brake torque is increased to the full brake torque level.
