  • Patent number: 4158806
Abstract: The proposed method for checking the state of the lining of a melting unit consists of measuring the electric parameters of equal portions of the lining, located along the perimeter of the melting unit. This is followed by determining the arithmetic mean and the maximum value of these parameters and comparing the two. The result of the comparison is indicative of the state of the lining. According to the invention, the device for checking the state of the lining comprises electrodes which are uniformly installed on the lining along the perimeter of the melting unit. The electrodes are connected to the inputs of an information unit, which provides information about the state of the lining, as well as to the inputs of a maximum value unit for determining the maximum value of a parameter being measured. One output of the maximum value unit is connected to the first input of a comparison unit for comparing the maximum value and the arithmetic mean of the parameter being measured.

  • Patent number: 4156451
Abstract: A continuous or semi-continuous metal casting method comprising the feeding of a liquid metal upon a bottom plate arranged inside an orifice of an annular inductor and the shaping of molten metal into an ingot by the electromagnetic field of said inductor. The bottom plate with the metal is then lowered, and a cooling medium is supplied upon the lateral face of the ingot in several cooling tiers arranged at various levels longitudinally of the ingot. As the bottom of the ingot comes level with a next adjacent coolant tier along the motion of the ingot cooling tier, the cooling tiers, beginning from the topmost one, are cut out or off one after the other, and until the casting ends, the cooling medium is supplied upon the lateral face of the ingot by the cooling tier that maintains the solidification front substantially at the mid-height of the inductor.
