  • Patent number: 5546573
Abstract: User specification of cultural bias during creation of a database allows for managing cultural bias of the database on a distributed data processing system. Upon creation of a database, it is determined if a cultural tag is specified by the user. A default cultural tag is provided if it is determined that no user specified cultural tag is provided. In some embodiments, the cultural tag is subject to validation. The user specified cultural tag or default cultural tag is then placed in a configuration file for the database. Query, change, or reset of the default cultural tag is also provided.

  • Patent number: 5511196
Abstract: A method and system in a data processing system for the establishment of relationships between reference objects in an object oriented environment and an associated data object residing outside an object oriented environment. A data object within an application outside an object oriented environment is identified. Multiple reference objects within an oriented environment are then established. Each reference object has a unique identifier and is associated with one of multiple users. Each reference object is associated with the identified data object so that multiple users may concurrently access the data object utilizing an associated reference object. The associated data object may then be modified in response to a modification of any reference object. Similarly, the reference objects may be modified in response to a modification of the associated data object.

  • Patent number: 5452421
Abstract: A method and system for improved communication in a data processing system. The data processing system includes at least one host and a storage subsystem having storage subsystem devices and at least one storage subsystem controller. The storage subsystem controller includes paths coupling the storage subsystem controller to storage subsystem devices. Communication is initiated between the storage subsystem controller and a selected storage subsystem device in response to a receipt of a request for communication. The request for communication specifies a predetermined path and a specified activity in response to a failure condition. A specified activity is automatically selected in response to a failure to achieve communication utilizing the predetermined path.

  • Patent number: 5420975
Abstract: A method and system for the automatic alteration of a display of multiple user selectable menu options. A counter is associated with each user selectable menu option. The counter associated with a user selectable menu option is then incremented in response to each selection by a user of the user selectable menu option. The display of the user selectable menu option is automatically altered in response to a state of the associated counter.

  • Patent number: 5404524
Abstract: A method and system for permitting simultaneous communication between a data processing system and input pointing devices of multiple types. During the initialization of an operating system, each input pointing device which is coupled to a data processing system is automatically identified. Thereafter, in response to each input from any one of the identified input pointing devices, a particular software routine is automatically selected, thus permitting each identified input pointing device to communicate with the data processing system.

  • Patent number: 5392295
Abstract: The invention provides a circuit and method for performing test procedures on a data storage and recovery system for a magnetic storage unit. Error sample values from a read operator in a data storage and recovery system are applied to a first and a second process path to generate output signals. A source of level samples of a logical data level is also provided. The first process path generates an output signal comprising a square of each error value sample. The second process path compares the error value samples and a compare level and generates an output signal comprising a result of each comparison. The output signal of the first process path, the second process path, or the level samples is selected and is associated with a data type. In response to a coincidence of a data type associated with a selected signal with a desired data type, the selected signal is gated and then accumulated. The window during which the selected signal is accumulated may vary.

  • Patent number: 5381527
Abstract: A method and system are disclosed for the efficient distribution of messages utilizing a data processing system. A distribution channel is selected in response to a user selection of a particular distribution media. If transmission via the selected distribution channel fails, an alternate distribution media is automatically selected and the message converted to that alternate distribution media. Transmission is then attempted utilizing the alternate distribution media via a different distribution channel. In one depicted embodiment of the present invention the process of automatically selecting a different distribution media and attempting transmission via a different distribution channel continues until such time as a transmission is successful or a specified maximum number of attempted transmissions has occurred.

  • Patent number: 5317695
Abstract: A method and system for permitting communication between a data processing system and input pointing devices of multiple types. During the initialization of an operating system, a particular selectable software routine is automatically selected in response to an automatic determination that a particular type of input pointing device is coupled to the data processing system. Thereafter, the particular selectable software routine which was automatically selected permits communication between the data processing system and the particular type of input pointing device which is coupled to the data processing system.

  • Patent number: 5267106
Abstract: A system is disclosed for clamping disks in a spaced parallel relationship around a circular hub in a disk drive storage system. An annular clamp is provided which includes tabs extending inwardly into the aperture of the annular clamp which define a slightly smaller aperture. When a collapsing force is applied to the annular clamp, these tabs are displaced outwardly such that the annular clamp may be placed over the circular hub. The circular hub includes a lip for receiving the tabs and prohibiting axial movement of the annular clamp in response to a release of the collapsing force. Annular spacers are also disposed around the circular hub between adjacent disks. In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, each annular spacer includes multiple pads on each side thereof, minimizing any disk distortion which may be caused by spacer size variations.
