  • Patent number: 5669405
Abstract: An apparatus and method for automatic disablement of a pressure relief valve used in connection with a backflow preventer in a fire line. A normally open solenoid valve is included in a pressure sampling line, extending from an inlet, or upstream chamber to one side of the pressure relief valve. A water flow switch, interconnected to a power supply and the solenoid valve, is provided in the fire line. In response to water flowing through the fire line, the switch conducts, actuating the solenoid to a closed position. The solenoid thereby hydraulically isolates the inlet sensor line leading to the pressure relief valve. By maintaining high pressure in this portion of the sensor line, the pressure relief valve is effectively disabled. Thus, even if a check valve malfunction occurs, the pressure relief valve will not open and cannot cause a catastrophic loss of water pressure in the fire line.

  • Patent number: 5647583
Abstract: An apparatus and method for singulating sheets from a stack of sheets and transporting individual ones of them to a conveyor. A picker arm is mounted at its upper end to a rotatable shaft, for reciprocating movement between first and second positions. A lower end of the arm includes a foot and a movable gripper jaw. When the arm is rotated into the first position, it grasps a segregated sheet. As the arm reverses direction and rotates toward the second position, it draws the sheet away from the stack. A sensor, provided within the foot, produces an electrical signal corresponding to the thickness of the sheet. The digital output signal is compared to a reference, or calibration value stored in a computer. If the output signal falls unacceptably outside the reference value, a signal is stored to effect later outsorting. Just before the arm reaches the second position, the jaw is opened, dropping the sheet upon the conveyor.

  • Patent number: 5645720
Abstract: A mounting head with an internal by-pass valve for use with disposable cartridge filters, for purifying gases or liquids. In preparation for changing a spent filter, the valve mechanism is translated from a first, lowered position to a second, raised position. Product is thereby redirected through a bypass passageway, allowing an uninterrupted flow of gas or liquid product to the downstream appliance or instrument. Concurrent with the valve translation, the old filter is physically decoupled from the head, and a new filter is installed in its place. Retranslation of the valve to its first position, resumes product flow through the cartridge filter.

  • Patent number: 5645009
Abstract: Disclosed is a construction applicable to stern drive and outboard types of power boat propulsion units for enhancing the performance normally provided by the customary trim/tilt capabilities designed into the units. At a critical juncture in the trim/tilt operation, the present device automatically "kicks in" and by intercepting only a predetermined portion of the propeller backwash provides an almost immediate stern up/bow down result without noticeable speed retardation. The device lends itself either to kit form or to factory installation.

  • Patent number: 5584315
Abstract: A check valve assembly, including a check valve and an associated check valve mounting flange. Additionally, a backflow preventer is shown, which uses a pair of check valve assemblies transversely positioned within a tubular housing. Also disclosed is a method for installing a downstream check valve to a mounting flange, located within a remote, outlet chamber of the backflow preventer housing. The check valve has an elongated base plate, generally elongated in shape. The mounting flange is provided with an elongated hole, sized and configured to pass a properly oriented downstream check valve during installation and removal procedures. The location and design of the downstream check valve assembly ensures that during backflow conditions, the check valve compresses against the mounting flange in sealing engagement.

  • Patent number: 5531312
Abstract: An apparatus and method for singulating individual articles from a group of articles. A rotary vacuum wheel includes a plurality of article pockets in its outer edge periphery. Apertures within each pocket are in communication with a vacuum pump. An article collection bin has a lower discharge port, through which a portion of the wheel periphery passes. The attractive vacuum forces draw individual articles into a respective pocket where they are secured. Continued rotation of the wheel transports the singulated articles to a discharge station, for further processing, such as labeling, counting, or packaging.
