Abstract: The present invention is a process for forming hydroxy-terminated aromatic oligomeric phosphates by the initial reaction of a monoaryl dihalophosphate, such as monophenyl dichlorophosphate, with an aromatic diol, such as resorcinol, to form a halo-terminated aromatic oligomeric phosphate and the subsequent reaction of that halo-terminated phosphate with aromatic diol to form the hydroxy-terminated aromatic oligomeric phosphate. The initial and subsequent reactions preferably employ a Lewis acid catalyst, such as magnesium dichloride.

Abstract: A process for the production of ketene dimers from fatty acid halides by reaction with tertiary amines. The process is operated batchwise and the reaction is started in the presence of an initial reaction mixture containing ketene dimer and pre-prepared crystals of tertiary amine hydrogen halide and is carried out in the substantial absence of additional solvents.
Abstract: An ionic metallocene catalyst for olefin polymerization which comprises: (1) a cyclopentadienyl-type ligand, a Group IVB transition metal, and alkyl, aryl, or hydride substituents, as a cation, and (2) a weakly coordinating anion comprising boron substituted with halogenated, such as tetra fluoro, aryl substituents preferably containing silylalkyl substitution, such as para-silyl t-butyldimethyl.
Abstract: A lubricant composition for an internal combustion engine contains a lubricant basestock and an effective amount for antiwear properties of an oligomer containing at least one mesogenic segment and at least one flexible segment. The oligomer can have a centrally disposed flexible segment, e.g., derived from a polyalkylene glycol such as polypropylene glycol, with mesogenic segments as end caps or it can contain alternating flexible and mesogenic segments, e.g., comprising a repeat unit comprising aromatic ester groups and at least one linear polyalkylene spacer. The oligomer preferably has a molecular weight of from about 1,000 to about 4,000 and is present at from about 0.1% to about 3%, by weight of the basestock.

Abstract: A laminate, adapted to be used as a supporting board for a printed circuit, is disclosed which comprises layers of an electrically non-conductive matrix material reinforced with unidirectionally (UD) oriented fibers with the layers comprising individual matrix material having different directions of orientation. The layers are stacked to form a laminate of crossing layers, and the laminate has a core plane relative to which the crossing layers are in mirror image relationship so that the laminate has orthotropic properties. The laminate comprises layers of adhesive material present at least between any pair of layers of UD-reinforced matrix material having different directions of orientation.
Abstract: A water-dispersible hybrid polymer comprises an ethylenically unsaturated polyurethane (core) onto which an addition polymer chain (shell) has been provided by polymerization, with the unsaturation of the polyurethane being achieved by the incorporation therein of dimethyl-m-isopropenyl benzyl isocyanate, and the acid number of the shell polymer being in the range of 30 to 120 (mg KOH/g). Aqueous dispersions of these hybrid polymers are pre-eminently suitable for use in aqueous coating compositions of the so-called clear coat type, particularly when stringent demands are imposed with regard to the acid resistance of the topcoats applied using these compositions.

Abstract: A bis(pentaerythritol phosphate alcohol) alkylphosphonate compound, such as one comprising an alkyl group of from about one to four carbon atoms, preferably bis(pentaerythritol phosphate alcohol) methylphosphonate, is a flame retardant compound. Such a compound can be prepared by the transesterification of a diphenyl alkyl phosphonate carrying the desired alkyl group with pentaerythritol phosphate alcohol. An alternative process of preparation comprises the reaction of pentaerythritol phosphate alcohol, a trialkylamine, and an alkylphosphonic dihalide.
Abstract: The invention relates to an optically non-linear active waveguiding material comprising an optically transparent polymer and a donor group and acceptor group-containing triphenylcarbinol as a dopant. Said dopants have a high hyperpolarizability and have a charge-transfer absorption band which is about the same as that of their corresponding compounds having only one donor-.pi.-acceptor unit. The triphenylcarbinols were found to display good solubility in polymers. Nitro-functionalized triphenylcarbinols are preferred because of their charge-transfer absorption band at a low wavelength (.lambda..sub.max at about 290 nm). Aldehyde-functionalized calix(4)arenes were also found to have this low wavelength charge-transfer absorption band (.lambda..sub.max at about 270 nm). Triphenyls comprising stilbene donor-.pi.-acceptor units are preferred because of their high hyperpolarizability.
