Patent number: 5253305Abstract: An optical recognition method and system utilizes a scanner to digitize a complex document comprising regions of text and graphics. A recognition engine, illustratively in the form of a general purpose computer, separates regions of text and graphics and identifies lines of text. Character boundaries are determined in each line of text by forming a shadow of the line of text on the horizontal axis. Each byte from the shadow is utilized to access a table stored in a memory associated with the recognition engine. The value contained in the table provides information as to where boundaries are located in the portion of the line of text corresponding to the byte from the shadow.Type: GrantFiled: June 25, 1991Date of Patent: October 12, 1993Assignee: Industrial Technology Research InstituteInventor: Yeong-Shuenn Lin

Patent number: 5237628Abstract: A system and method for automatically processing machine printed forms which are filled out by hand are disclosed. The inventive system and method eliminate the use of a manual data entry step. Typically each form has one or more fields, each field having a machine printed field identifier such as the words "name" or "social security number" and the corresponding information which is filled in by hand. A scanner or other device forms a digital image of each form. An optical recognition engine searches the digital image of each form through use of an algorithm which can recognize machine printed but not handwritten characters to locate the fields in the digital image by locating the machine printed field identifiers. An offline handwritten character recognition algorithm is then utilized to recognize the handwritten characters in each individual field. Symbolic information corresponding to the recognized handwritten characters is then stored in a database in a memory.Type: GrantFiled: June 3, 1991Date of Patent: August 17, 1993Assignee: NYNEX CorporationInventor: Arthur C. Patent number: 5226002Abstract: A matrix multiplier circuit which is based on distributed arithmetic is disclosed. In the conventional matrix multiplier circuit, one row of J elements from a data matrix is multiplied in parallel with K columns of elements from a transform matrix to form one row of elements of an output matrix. Patent number: 5222726Abstract: The invention relates to a method and apparatus for the floatable guiding of material in the form of sheets or webs. The material in the form of sheets or webs (1a, 1b, 1c) is guided over floating nozzles disposed on one side and operating on the air cushion principle. Suction shafts are disposed between the individual floating nozzles, so that during conveying the material is alternately subjected to excess pressure and negative pressure forces, being guided as a result free from back-up and flapping in a required conveying plane. The invention is more particularly suited for guiding material over convexly and/or concavely curved conveying paths such as are usual, for example, for the dragging conveyance of printed sheets between the outlet of a printing machine and the delivery.Type: GrantFiled: October 22, 1990Date of Patent: June 29, 1993Inventor: Hilmar Vits
