  • Patent number: 5253305
Abstract: An optical recognition method and system utilizes a scanner to digitize a complex document comprising regions of text and graphics. A recognition engine, illustratively in the form of a general purpose computer, separates regions of text and graphics and identifies lines of text. Character boundaries are determined in each line of text by forming a shadow of the line of text on the horizontal axis. Each byte from the shadow is utilized to access a table stored in a memory associated with the recognition engine. The value contained in the table provides information as to where boundaries are located in the portion of the line of text corresponding to the byte from the shadow.

  • Patent number: 5237628
Abstract: A system and method for automatically processing machine printed forms which are filled out by hand are disclosed. The inventive system and method eliminate the use of a manual data entry step. Typically each form has one or more fields, each field having a machine printed field identifier such as the words "name" or "social security number" and the corresponding information which is filled in by hand. A scanner or other device forms a digital image of each form. An optical recognition engine searches the digital image of each form through use of an algorithm which can recognize machine printed but not handwritten characters to locate the fields in the digital image by locating the machine printed field identifiers. An offline handwritten character recognition algorithm is then utilized to recognize the handwritten characters in each individual field. Symbolic information corresponding to the recognized handwritten characters is then stored in a database in a memory.

  • Patent number: 5235477
Abstract: A track position detecting mechanism is used to detect an outermost peripheral track position of a magnetic disc for use as a reference point in making various accesses to the magnetic disc. The track position detecting mechanism has an optical detector including a light emitting element and a light receiving element, where an optical path is formed between the light emitting element and the light receiving element, and an interrupt member provided at such a position on a carriage that the interrupt member interrupts the optical path within the optical detector when a magnetic head is located at an outermost peripheral track position on the magnetic disc. The optical path substantially coincides with a plane which includes a center line of a guide shaft which guides the carriage, and the plane is parallel to a base of the carriage.

  • Patent number: 5231462
Abstract: A spectrophotometer useful for measuring absorption or emission bands of a substance irradiated with optical radiation, comprises a light source for producing the optical radiation, a monochromator for isolating light of wavelength (W) from the optical radiation and which modulates the wavelength (W) by a predetermined wavelength amplitude (.delta.W), and a photodetector for detecting the intensity of light passing through the monochromator and for producing a measuring signal in response thereto. The monochromator operates under the control of an electronic control unit which produces a control signal that causes the monochromator to scan across a portion of the spectrum of the optical radiation at a frequency (f.sub.2) to transmit a narrow band of radiation at the wavelength (W). The control unit includes a modulation generator which produces a signal that causes the monochromator to modulate the wavelength (W) by the predetermined wavelength amplitude (.delta.W) at a frequency (f.sub.1).

  • Patent number: 5225832
Abstract: A high speed variable length decoder can decode more than one code word in one cycle. A PLA used in the decoder includes extra product lines and extra output lines in order to detect and decode two successive short length code words in one cycle. When two short length code words are detected, a corresponding extra product line is activated and the two code words are decoded in the same cycle using an extra output line. For a digital video compression system, a significant speed-up in the variable length decoder can be achieved by the invention.

  • Patent number: 5226002
Abstract: A matrix multiplier circuit which is based on distributed arithmetic is disclosed. In the conventional matrix multiplier circuit, one row of J elements from a data matrix is multiplied in parallel with K columns of elements from a transform matrix to form one row of elements of an output matrix. In contrast, in the inventive matrix multiplier circuit, N rows of elements from the data matrix are multiplied in parallel with K columns of elements from a transform matrix. Maximum advantage of parallel processing and pipelined processing is achieved if N is the nearest integer to M/J where M is the precision of the elements from the data matrix.

  • Patent number: 5222726
Abstract: The invention relates to a method and apparatus for the floatable guiding of material in the form of sheets or webs. The material in the form of sheets or webs (1a, 1b, 1c) is guided over floating nozzles disposed on one side and operating on the air cushion principle. Suction shafts are disposed between the individual floating nozzles, so that during conveying the material is alternately subjected to excess pressure and negative pressure forces, being guided as a result free from back-up and flapping in a required conveying plane. The invention is more particularly suited for guiding material over convexly and/or concavely curved conveying paths such as are usual, for example, for the dragging conveyance of printed sheets between the outlet of a printing machine and the delivery.
