Abstract: A multilamp photoflash array responsive to either a relatively high or relatively low pulse potential includes normally open (N/O) switches formed from an admixture including sliver carbonate and/or silver oxide, titanium dioxide, a blender binder and aluminum hydroxide. Also, enhanced results are provided by the inclusion of a sulfur compound in the range of about 0.001 to 5.0 percent by weight within the admixture.
Abstract: A high-voltage photoflash lamp is provided wherein the lead-in wires are electrically insulated from the metallic shreds therein by including electrically insulating beads in the primer material. The primer also includes combustible metal powder, an oxidizing agent, and a binder, wherein at least part of the combustible metal powder in the primer is in large particle form.
Abstract: Compositions based on polythiophene are described having incorporated therein a polyether, such as polytetrahydrofuran. The polyether is present in an amount of at least about 10 weight percent of the polythiophene present. The compositions exhibit improved mechanical integrity, processing properties, and d.c. electrical conductivity over polythiophene. A process for producing the compositions is also described in which a thiophene compound is electrochemically polymerized in the presence of a dissolved polyether.
Abstract: A chemical vapor purification process for the preparation of high purity metal fluorides using the thermodynamic separation of cations by formation of a gaseous-metal-containing compound, vapor transport, and fluorination is disclosed.
Abstract: A laser medium containing a chromium (3+) doped germanate garnet represented by the general formula: Ca.sub.3 M.sub.2(1-x) Cr.sub.2x (GeO.sub.4).sub.3 wherein M is Al.sup.3+, Ga.sup.3+, Sc.sup.3+, Lu.sup.3+, or Y.sup.3+ and 0<x.ltoreq.0.25 is disclosed. A laser employing the above-described laser medium is also described.

Abstract: Ion implanted polydiacetylenes prepared by implanting ions into substituted polydiacetylenes at fluence levels from about 1.times.10.sup.13 ions/cm.sup.2 to about 1.times.10.sup.17 ions/cm.sup.2 are disclosed. Ion implanted polydiacetylenes exhibit electrical and/or optical properties which are different from those of untreated polydiacetylenes.

Abstract: Compositions based on polypyrrole are described having incorporated therein a polyether, such as polytetrahydrofuran. The polyether is present in an amount of at least about 10 weight percent of the polypyrrole present. The compositions exhibit improved processing properties over these of polypyrrole. A process for producing the compositions is also described in which a pyrrole compound is electrochemically polymerized in the presence of a dissolved polyether.
Abstract: An ultraviolet light source includes a volume filled with a dose of AlBr.sub.3 and an inert gas. No mercury is used. During electrical discharge excited states of AlBr.sub.2, and AlBr emit light, with AlBr having a broad ultraviolet emission peaking at about 278 nm. The source may be energized with or without internal electrodes. Phosphors may be employed to convert the ultraviolet to visible light. The lamp's envelope may be aluminosilicate coated quartz.
Abstract: The laser device of the present invention comprises: a semiconductor substrate; a first cladding layer of semiconductor formed on the substrate; an active layer of semiconductor formed on the first cladding layer, thereby forming a junction plane between the active layer and the first cladding layer; a second cladding layer of semiconductor formed on the active layer and a cap layer of semiconductor formed on the second cladding layer; the active layer having a lattice constant parallel to the junction plane sufficiently larger than the lattice constant normal to the junction plane so as to increase the optical gain of the TM mode relative to the optical gain of the normally operating TE mode, such that at a first injection current level, the laser device operates in the TM mode and at a second injection current level, the laser device operates in the TE mode.
Abstract: Disclosed is a method for applying a continuous protective coating to the surface of individual phosphor particles. The method involves chemical vapor deposition of the protective coating on individual particles of a phosphor powder while the phosphor particles are suspended in a fluidized bed. During the method, the fluidized particles are exposed to the vaporized coating precursor material at a first temperature, which is less than the decomposition temperature of the precursor material, and the precursor material is reacted to form the desired coating material at a second temperature, which is greater than or equal to the temperature at which the precursor material reacts to form the coating material.
Abstract: A miniaturized multilamp photoflash array including a transparent plastic cover member with the cover member having at least one prismatic barrier divider extending outwardly therefrom between a pair of parallel arrayed flashlamps. The prismatic barrier divider serves as a shield whereby sympathetic flashing of adjacent flashlamps is reduced.
Abstract: A negative working resist composition and medium for microlithographic recording comprises a vinyl polymer having aromatic quaternized nitrogen-containing pendant groups. The resist undergoes a transformation from high to low solubility in polar solvents such as water or low molecular weight alcohols upon exposure to electron beams, ultraviolet light, or X-rays. A method for patterning substrates by employing the resist composition is also disclosed.
