  • Patent number: 5542418
Abstract: An exothermic, hydratable fuel mixture for a self-heating food container comprises particles of a base such as lime and an acid such as oxalic acid. When water is added to the mixture, exothermic heat is generated by hydration of the lime and neutralization reaction between the lime and the acid. Mixtures of bases and mixtures of acids can be used to optimize the heating characteristics of the fuel mixture.

  • Patent number: 5520816
Abstract: The present invention is directed to a water desalination system that can be used in a home or commercial entity which uses a reverse osmosis or nanofilter membrane element in a unique flow configuration which promotes self cleaning of a membrane element to prevent a buildup of salts and minerals on the membrane surface. The systems use the dynamics of water usage in a water service line, not connected to the membrane to flush a recirculation/reservoir tank that feeds the reverse osmosis or nanofilter membrane periodically. The systems also produce little or no waste effluent that must be dumped into a waste system, thereby wasting water and causing an environmental problem.

  • Patent number: 5498376
Abstract: An improved packing body is formed by forming a first end wall of a perforated strip into an interior convolution surrounded by a peripheral convolution containing the second end wall of the strip. The convolutions may be in spiral form or concentric polygons such as cylinders joined by connector segments. Baffle elements can project from the surface of the strip at an angle to the longitudinal axis of the packing body. Tapered strips with the large end wall disposed to the interior can be bent into a shape approaching spherical.

  • Patent number: 5482528
Abstract: Solid waste such as sewage sludge containing fecal matter is processed to reduce pathogens by at least 90% and converted to a useful product such as an amendment to agricultural land by combining the waste with an acid such as concentrated sulfuric and a base such as fly ash which exothermically react and thermally pasteurize the waste and add mineral value to the product. Pozzolanic materials, such as fly ash agglomerate the product and after grinding, the particles can aerate soil. The calcium oxide in fly ash reacts with sulfuric acid to form calcium sulfate dihydrate, a soil amendment. The amount of sulfuric acid can be controlled to provide a product with acid pH which is useful to neutralize alkaline soils such as those found in the Western United States of America.

  • Patent number: 5480432
Abstract: The position of the rear esophageal flange of a voice prosthesis disposed in a tracheoesophageal fistula is determined by forming a distinctive radiopaque pattern on the flange, preferably by insert molding a radiopaque ring along the perimeter of the flange and radiographically imaging the flange to determine the pattern of the ring. Pattern recognition of the ring is improved by forming the concentric flapper valve of radiopaque material.

  • Patent number: 5477287
Abstract: A strobe light mounting system for underwater cameras with arm segments clamped together with side clamps that grasp balls on the ends of the arm segments. The arm segments are rigid, light, and low in water resistance because they have four longitudinal channels pierced by mutually orthogonal transverse holes of large diameter so that longitudinal ribs are preserved at the maximum diameter of the arm segment. Water flows easily through the orthogonal holes permitting easy movement underwater.

  • Patent number: 5474387
Abstract: A bicycle pedal crank bearing system has a hollow axle within which expandable cone shaped discs are flattened so as to expand radially outward and expand the axle into locking engagement with a thrust sleeve surrounding the axle. Since the thrust sleeve can not move axially relative to the bearing, the axle is likewise axially positioned, but is still free to rotate. The chain path is, thus, easily aligned and access to the bearings for maintenance is made easier.

  • Patent number: 5474489
Abstract: A base lens blocking system comprises a blocking member formed of a flange with a rearward directed shank received in a collet of a spindle, preferably, a dead length, recessed collet. The front surface of the flange contains a lens blank engaging region which can be recessed. The lens blank is applied to the flat, front surface of the flange by means of a disc of adhesive tape, either a thermoplastic adhesive or a double-sided pressure sensitive adhesive tape or a very thin film of wax applied to a heated surface of the flange under a pressure from 5-20 pounds. A batch of blocked lens blanks can be cut with base curves and processed to finished lenses without measuring the center thickness of the base curves of each lens.

  • Patent number: 5474398
Abstract: Porous pipe formed of particles of vulcanized rubber dispersed in a binder resin such as linear low density polyethylene preferably having a Melt Index below 1.0 and a broad distribution of molecular weights, is stabilized to reduce degradation by ultraviolet light by dispersing in the binder resin an effective amount of an ultraviolet stabilizer such as 0.1 to 10% by weight of carbon black.

  • Patent number: 5472091
Abstract: A storage container holding photographs and/or negatives in segregated chambers in which a central polypropylene frame is wrapped with a resin coated non-acid paperboard membrane. The membrane is spaced away from the frame by a variety of projections so as to form the chambers. The central frame is rigid and dimensionally consistent to allow stacking of the containers even though the paperboard membrane is flexible and forms 3 exterior walls of the container.

  • Patent number: 5458817
Abstract: An improved packing body is formed from a strip divided into segments along fold lines. Segments along one side of a medial segment are alternately folded along the fold lines into a stack on the top surface of the medial segment. Segments on the other side of the medial segment are then folded along the fold lines into a stack on the bottom surface of the medial segments. Side segments hingedly connected to the medial or end segments can be folded along the side edges of the stack. Baffle elements can project from the surface of the strip at an angle to the longitudinal axis of the packing body. Tapered strips with a large medial segment disposed to the interior can be folded into a shape approaching spherical.
