Abstract: In order to wash inert materials, even of a large size, with a limited amount of washing liquid and with a lesser consumption of energy and without moving metal parts, apparatus having a plurality of tubular rotors (1) which are in side-by-side relation but spaced a distance from each other and are rigidly locked with a common shaft (13) which is horizontal or at an angle with respect to the horizontal, in which each rotor (1) has a plurality of transverse annular baffle plates (2) adapted to delimit corresponding annular channels (3) and having in each channel (3) a plurality of peripheral boxes (15). As the rotors (1) revolve, the washing liquid overflows to the outside over the lower baffle plate (2) of each rotor (1) and the material being washed, which is introduced through the mouth of the rotor (1) located at one end of the apparatus, advances against the current through all the rotors (1) until it is discharged from the mouth of the rotor (1) located at the other end.
Abstract: A protective device, such as a boxing helmet, rib or muscle protector, athletic mat, hockey helmet, motorcycle helmet and similar devices, is formed such that the major shock absorption is accomplished by a series of bowed, preferably plastic, members which flex when the device is subjected to an impact, so as to absorb the shock and dissipate its transmission to the user. Because of the nature of these bowed members, when the shock has been dissipated, the member returns to its original position so as to be able to absorb further shocks.
Abstract: An atomizer injects fuel oil into one end of a heated tube. As the atomized fuel travels down the tube, it is vaporized. A nozzle at the other end of the tube assures that pressure is built up in the tube so that fuel oil vapor is applied as a steady continuous stream from the nozzle directly into a combustion chamber where it is mixed with ambient air and burned. Ambient air is drawn into the combustion chamber through a vent and a blower is not used. A secondary tube is in communication with the main tube through a bore in the side wall of the main heating tube near the outlet nozzle. A screen at the outlet nozzle prevents particles from clogging the nozzle. These particles fall into the secondary tube to be collected in a sump at the end of the secondary tube. Electric current is passed through the walls of the main heating tube and the secondary tube to generate heat to vaporize the fuel and to provide a temperature gradient along the main heating tube such that a maximum temperature of above 400.degree.
Abstract: A machine for comminuting material by impact has a hollow impeller rotatable about a substantially vertical axis. The impeller has an upwardly opening material inlet and at least one radially outward material outlet. A tube serves to feed material to be comminuted into the material inlet. The lower portion of the tube rotates about its longitudinal axis and imparts an angular velocity to the material fed therethrough. Material entering the impeller travels along at least a portion of the interior walls of the impeller and on emerging from the impeller strikes an anvil where comminution occurs.

Abstract: Cutting tools according to the invention are provided with a wear-resistant coating of heat-resistant compounds of high-melting metals. A layer of a pure metal is provided between the base material and the coating. The base material is a ceramic or an aluminum oxide-based metal-ceramic material. The intermediate layer is discontinuous. Such tools are manufactured by using condensation of plasma material and ion bombardment in order to successively deposit an intermediate layer of a pure metal and a coating of heat-resistant compounds of high-melting metals on the surface of the base material. The intermediate layer is deposited at a temperature of 1/2T.sub.S >T>1/3T.sub.S, where T.sub.S is the melting temperature of the metal being deposited and T is the temperature of the tool in .degree. K. The condensation rate and the duration of deposition are selected bearing in mind that metal is to be deposited only on defects found on the surface of the base material.
