  • Patent number: 4732784
Abstract: An aqueous coating solution is sprayed into the interior of the reactor. After the aqueous coating solution has been sprayed, steam is injected and condensed within the reactor. Upon polymerizing a vinyl chloride-base monomer composition in the reactor after having been treated, the formation of deposits of polymer on the internal surfaces of the reactor is substantially reduced and even suppressed.

  • Patent number: 4672504
Abstract: An electronic generator for air purification includes a molded plastic housing having a flat floor and a cover. The housing has an air inlet and a fan pulls air in through the inlet and blows it out through remote outlets. Within the housing and mounted on the floor there is a concave-convex dome made of non-conducting material and having a non-conducting outer surface. The concave surface is coated with a conductive material, and high voltage providing transformer and rectifier structure are mounted within the dome in an inaccessible position. A negative high voltage potential is applied to the conducting concave surface to establish a negative electrostatic charge over the convex surface. The air moving through the housing passes over this convex surface and negative ions are produced.

  • Patent number: 4664418
Abstract: A system for handling orders including a sheet defining a plurality of delineated spaces. Indicia are displayed in the spaces for identifying a plurality of items available for ordering, and a pencil or other marking device is used for placing marks in selected ones of the spaces. The sheet is used in conjunction with a cash register or similar device, and the delineated spaces on the sheet form a pattern corresponding with the pattern of keys on the register. In use, the operator of the register will depress or otherwise operate the keys of the register in only those positions bearing a mark. In this fashion, the register will record the particular items ordered, and the sheet can then be used for order-filling and verification after removal from the face of the register.

  • Patent number: 4664391
Abstract: An apparatus for retaining a liquid phase which may include solid materials between a fixed wall and a rotary member passing therethrough. A seal is thereby provided which eliminates friction while accepting limited leakage of the liquid phase. The apparatus includes:(a) a partition member which is fixed with respect to the rotary member and the periphery of which has at least one planar surface which is perpendicular to the axis of rotation of the rotary member. This forms a bearing surface, and a surface which is concentric to the axis and which is joined to the bearing surface;(b) a retaining ring which is positioned on the planar surface and the concentric surface of the partition member, and which is fixed with respect to the rotary member; and,(c) a collar joined to the wall and having an inside diameter that is at least equal to the outside diameter of the ring.

  • Patent number: 4660398
Abstract: The invention relates to a process for controlling a rolling mill having oblique rolls which is used for rolling metal rods or tubes, and to the rolling mill for carrying out the process. The rolling mill according to the invention comprises at least three rolls distributed round the rolling axis, each of the rolls having a profile generated by revolution of decreasing cross-section, the roll axes not intersecting the rolling axis, and each of the rolls exerting on the product a pressure which permits helicoidal rolling to be carried out. The process involves controlling the forward feed while keeping the angle of inclination of each of the axes of revolution of the rolls constant relative to a secant straight line, the so-called control axis, which is a straight line perpendicular to the rolling axis and intersecting said rolling axis and which traverses the zone of contact between the roll and the product to be rolled.

  • Patent number: 4658617
Abstract: The method consists of a cold pilger mill to effect a recoil movement of the chuck upstream followed by a return to its original position, at least once per rolling cycle. The period during which the mandrel is withdrawn with respect to its rolling position is used advantageously for example to carry out the rotation of the mandrel and/or to cause a lubricant under pressure to circulate between the mandrel and the pipe. The method is applied particularly to the rolling of pipes with a large section, with high reduction rates.

  • Patent number: 4657449
Abstract: A remote cutting tool for insertion into an underground sewage pipe for trimming branch line stub ends that extend into the sewage pipe. The cutting tool comprises a sled adapted to be drawn through the interior of the pipe by cables attached thereto. A cylindrical cutting bit is driven by a hydraulic motor, the motor and bit being retained on the sled through a hydraulic jack ram. The jack ram facilitates the axial movement of the motor and bit with respect to the sled as required to effect branch stub cutting. Expandable pneumatic sleeves are provided on the sled which, when inflated, lock the sled in fixed orientation in the pipe prior to each cutting operation. A guide member is positioned over the pneumatic sleeve adjacent the point of intended cutting to deflect the sleeve in the opposed direction and to align the cutting bit in close proximity to the sewer pipe wall at the point of stub pipe entry.

  • Patent number: 4652722
Abstract: Apparatus for inscribing characters or other symbols onto moving articles or substrate. The symbols or characters are defined by a matrix having a predetermined number of rows and columns. The apparatus includes a plurality of individual lasers, each dedicated to write a predetermined character row. Columns are written in sequence as the article passes the laser head. Light energy from the lasers is directed by mirrors to an exit lens which focuses the laser beams onto the articles or substrate to be marked. Separate laser mirrors provide reduction in laser beam spacing thereby facilitating a correspondingly foreshortened laser beam path. The lasers are arranged into two groups and interleaved to form the desired character row spacing without mirror overlap or shadowing.

  • Patent number: 4647197
Abstract: In a distortion inspection apparatus of a glass plate, a light and dark contrast pattern is sensed by an image sensor through a glass plate. The number of bits corresponding to a light or dark portion is detected from bipolar image data which are divided into a plurality of bits along each of parallel scanning lines assumed upon a surface of the glass plate. Then, a distortion state of the surface of the glass plate is discriminated in accordance with the differences among the thus detected number of bits and a reference value thereof. In such an arrangement, quantitative distortion discrimination can be performed.

  • Patent number: 4643634
Abstract: A handling apparatus for work pieces such as sheet metal pieces which are to be formed in a sheet metal press. The handling apparatus is designed to pick up a work piece from a first location which may comprise a stack of sheets, and to then move the work piece to a second location which may comprise the tool of the forming press. In the course of movement, the work piece will generally travel laterally, however, a vertical component of movement is imposed in at least one location, for example, when placing the work piece in position at the forming station. The drive means for moving the gripping means comprises a driver and a first shaft supporting a primary arm. A connection is provided between the first shaft and the driver so that the driver oscillates the primary arm. A pivoting follower is also associated with the driver so that movement of the driver simultaneously controls movement of the follower.
