  • Patent number: 7466658
Abstract: Coded digital data symbols sent from a transmitter through a transmission channel of a communications network are received in a receiver. An estimate, represented by a first number of bits, of a sent data symbol is calculated, and a second number of bits, lower than the first number, is selected from the estimate to achieve a rounded estimate represented by the second number of bits. The rounded estimate is decoded to achieve a decoded data symbol. A target value for a block error rate of the transmission channel is received from the network; and the second number of bits is selected in dependence on the target block error rate value. Thus an optimal rounded estimate is provided in most situations, and the method can be performed with the limited computational resources of a terminal.

  • Patent number: 7466983
Abstract: Methods of handling messages at an interface in a communication system include the steps of receiving a message having an information element indicating the message's type, determining whether a frequency of receipt of messages of a predetermined type exceeds a threshold, handling the message in a normal way if the frequency does not exceed the threshold, and discarding the message if the frequency exceeds the threshold and the message is of the predetermined type. Such methods are useful in avoiding overloads after re-starts of serving GPRS support nodes or base station systems in packet-switched communication systems.

  • Patent number: 7457280
Abstract: The combination of narrowband applications with broadband transport may be enabled with a tri-level nodal communications architecture including a call control node having both switching intelligence and narrowband switching fabric, a plurality of connection control nodes having broadband switching fabric and an intermediate node for interworking between the call control node and the plurality of connection control nodes. The intermediate node includes a database providing an indication of which format(s) of multiple formats a given connection control node uses. When an incoming communication arrives to/from a specific connection control node, the database is consulted to ascertain the corresponding particular format(s) used by that specific connection control node. Accordingly, the incoming communication may be translated responsive to the ascertained particular format(s).

  • Patent number: 7457237
Abstract: A media gateway controller (MGC) is described herein that implements a shared risk group package to control and prevent a media gateway (MG) from establishing redundant links like a primary link and a secondary link that use resources that share the same risk of failure. Essentially, the MGC uses the shared risk group package to control which resources like ephemeral terminations are used by the MG to establish the primary link and the secondary link such that if any of the resources associated with the primary link fail then the secondary link remains operational within the MG and if any of the resources associated with the secondary link fail then the primary link remains operational within the MG.

  • Patent number: 7432794
Abstract: A variable integrated inductor is described herein which has an inductance value that can be switched between two or more values. In the preferred embodiment, the variable integrated inductor includes a multi-loop primary inductor which is electromagnetically coupled to a pair of secondary inductors. The secondary inductors are connected to one another to form a closed circuit within which the secondary inductors have a changeable topology that can be switched between a series connection and a parallel connection in order to change an inductance value which is output by the multi-loop primary inductor. In one application, the variable integrated inductor is used in a voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) which is of the type that can be used in a multi-band RF radio transceiver (e.g., wireless communication device).

  • Patent number: 7412216
Abstract: A radio transmitter includes a transmitter circuit which produces a signal at a first frequency, and has digital divider circuitry, for dividing the first frequency to produce a signal at a second frequency. The noise performance of the digital divider is adjusted, depending upon the transmitter output power. Specifically, the digital divider is operated with a relatively good noise performance when the gain of the power amplifier is high, and is operated with a worse noise performance at low output powers. This can ensure that a specified noise requirement is met, without excessively increasing the power consumption or the size of the device.
