  • Patent number: 4463263
Abstract: A radiographic method and apparatus for nondestructively monitoring a specimen for density variations are disclosed.A positron-annihilation-radiation-emitting point source is situated approximately midway along the axis separating two detectors sensitive to positron-annihilation (0.511-MeV photon) radiation. The outputs of the two detectors are fed to an electronic circuit that reckons only time-coincident events that are sensed simultaneously in the two detectors. The specimen to be measured is positioned between the source and one of the detectors such that the cone of detected, i.e., coincident, photons intercepts the region of interest. The number of coincidences that are counted in a preset time interval are recorded, or, alternatively, the coincidence count rate is monitored directly with a ratemeter.

  • Patent number: 4460378
Abstract: A process for the production of a "fuel grade" mixture of methanol and higher alcohols from CO and H.sub.2.To reduce the amount of water contained in the mixture coming from the synthesis reactor of the alcohol synthesis the reaction product is cooled and fed to a secondary reactor wherein the reaction of conversion:CO+H.sub.2 O.revreaction.CO.sub.2 +H.sub.2is conducted in conditions near to equilibrium. The further reaction product is cooled down further so as to obtain a liquid phase constituted by the alcohols, and in which there are still dissolved some gases, and a gaseous phase containing the carbon dioxide produced in the secondary reactor together with the non-reacted gases. The gaseous phase is sent to a section of absorption of the CO.sub.2 wherein the absorbing liquid is constituted by the very alcoholic mixture produced; after removal of the CO.sub.2 the gas is partly recycled and partly let off in order to avoid the accumulation of inert gases contained in the feeding mixture.

  • Patent number: 4450448
Abstract: An apparatus and method for use in an n-element electronically scannable array antenna provides a notched auxillary radiation pattern for use in reducing interference energy received in the sidelobes of the antenna's main radiation pattern. The apparatus includes circuitry for feeding the antenna elements in series from one end of the array to the opposed end thereof. Each antenna element is fed through a directional coupler which is responsive to its associated antenna element along with the downstream antenna elements in the array. The directional couplers provide a first output signal for forming a primary radiation pattern. At least one directional coupler also provides a second output signal on receive for forming an auxiliary radiation pattern having a notch in the direction of the primary radiation pattern main beam and electronically steerable therewith, and a relatively uniform response in all other directions.

  • Patent number: 4449350
Abstract: Apparatus and method for making sealed packages for spreadable products includes means for transporting a relatively stiff base member carrying a spreadable product in the approximate center thereof, means for feeding a relatively thin flexible sheet material and for cutting such flexible material into predetermined lengths and for feeding such cut lengths to a rotatable vacuum drum having a plurality of die stations. There is a first tamper which cooperates with the die at the die station as the stations rotate past the tamper to shape each cut length of flexible material into a predetermined three-dimensional form. The three-dimensional form is transported by the vacuum drum to a position over the stiff base and the spreadable product thereon where the formed flexible sheet is released by the vacuum drum and cohesively joined along its outwardly extended edges to the base member to enclose the spreadable product positioned thereon.

  • Patent number: RE31613
Abstract: A measuring transformer comprises a measuring conductor carrying the current I.sub.m to be measured, a pre-magnetizing winding which carries a pre-magnetizing current I.sub.v, and a magnetic field comparing means which is exposed to the magnetic field produced by the current I.sub.m and the magnetic field produced by the pre-magnetizing current I.sub.v and is alternately controlled in both directions of saturation. The magnetic field comparing means is a magnetic film which may be anisotropic, operated in the magnetic preferential direction, and have a thickness of at most a few microns. It may be secured to pole shoes of a magnetic core or arranged between a flat measuring conductor and a pre-magnetizing coil of flat cross-section. The measuring transformer can be used as an input transformer in a static electricity meter. In a further embodiment, the output pulses can be obtained directly from the magnetic field comparing means.
