Abstract: A combined brush and comb ("brush-comb") is used to apply tones, touches or streaks of hair treatment liquid to human hair. The brush-comb has a curved body portion terminating in a tip, which may be used to part the hair, and a head portion having comb tines and brush tufts positioned close to the tines. Each tine has at least one and preferably a plurality of grooves perpendicular to its axis to retain the liquid and to replenish the liquid to the brush tufts. In operation, the brush-comb head portion is dipped into a container of the liquid and then the head portion is pulled through the hair to apply touches of the liquid to selected areas of the hair.

Abstract: The composition contains: an antiinflammatory effective amount of piroxicam; an amount of tetrahydroxypropylethylenediamine sufficient to solubilize the piroxicam in the composition; an amount of C.sub.2 -C.sub.6 alkylene glycol, or mixture thereof, sufficient to detackify the composition and provide humectancy; about 0.2% to about 2% carbomer; about 30% to about 60% C.sub.2 -C.sub.4 alkanol; and water qs to 100%. Hydroxypropylcellulose can be added to the composition.
Abstract: Methods of enhancing skin permeation and skin retention of .alpha.-hydroxy acids for the treatment of dermatological disorders by applying a composition containing an amphoteric salt of an .alpha.-hydroxy acid, such as lactic, glycolic, citric, tartaric or malic acid and an amino acid, dipepdide, polypeptide or proteins, in a dermatologically acceptable carrier which contains 0.5 to 8% glycerol monocaprylate, 0 to 80% petrolatum and 0 to 30% isopropyl myristrate, the pH of the composition being from 3 to 9, and compositions for practicing such methods.
Abstract: 4-Halo-1-naphthol is reacted with a secondary amine and formaldehyde to produce a reaction mixture containing a Mannich base which is hydrogenated to produce 2-methyl-1-naphthol. Advantageously, the procedure can be carried out in one pot.

Abstract: The invention provides stable, substantially anhydrous, transparent, gelled, antiperspirant sticks which are substantially free of lower monohydroxy alcohols, contain dibenzylmonsorbitol acetal as a gelling agent and are stabilized by the presence of a weakly basic, organic, nitrogen containing, stabilizing compound soluble in the composition employed to produce the stick.
Abstract: Direct dyes having quaternary center with a long aliphatic chain, compositions containing those dyes, and the process of using them to dye hair are disclosed. These dyes have a higher affinity for hair and are more shampoo stable than conventional direct dyes, and produce pleasing uniform dyeing.
Abstract: 2-substituted-1-naphthols when coupled with an oxidation dye precursor in an oxidative dye system produce a long lasting intense color to hair. Use of such couplers makes available to the colorist novel oxidation hair dyes which surprisingly show a color shift to the red. Dyestuffs prepared through use of the 2-substituted-1-naphthol couplers are substantially more acid-fast compared to like dyestuffs using a 1-naphthol coupler. Compositions and a method of dyeing hair are also disclosed.

Abstract: The present invention relates to composition and methods for enhancing and/or controlling epidermal, dermal and transdermal penetration of topically applied pharmacologically active agents by use of dibutyl adipate, or a mixture of dibutyl adipate and isopropyl myristate.
Abstract: The hair fixative composition contains from about 2 to about 10 weight %, based on the weight of the composition, of a water-dispersible amorphous thermoplastic hair fixative polyester whose polymer chain is represented by the structure: ##STR1## wherein A is an aromatic dicarboxylic acid moiety, G is an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic glycol residue, on the average there being 5 to 8 sodiosulfo substituents per molecule. The fixative polyester is in colloidal suspension in the composition. The composition further contains from about 0.1 to about 3 weight %, based on the weight of the composition, of a copolymer containing dimethylpolysiloxane and organo-modified methylsiloxane moieties. Such amount is sufficient to cause the composition to spread out on a hair shaft when the composition is applied to same. The composition also contains from 0 to about 25 weight %, based on the weight of the composition, of a lower alcohol and sufficient water to bring the composition to 100 weight %.

Abstract: An indole of the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sub.5 and R.sub.6 are acetoxy or hydrogen, at least one of R.sub.5 and R.sub.6 being acetoxy, is prepared, in good yield, in a one pot synthesis, without extraction, recrystallization or isolation of intermediate reaction product; A compound of the formula ##STR2## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are benzyloxy or hydrogen, provided that at least one of R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 is benzyloxy, is subjected to reductive cyclization followed by acetylation of the resultant reaction product.
Abstract: N.sup.1 -Trifluoroalkyl substituted 2-nitro-p-phenylenediamines, compositions containing same, and their use as direct dyes for keratinous fibers are disclosed.
Abstract: 1,5-diamino-2,4-bis(2,2,2-trifluoroethoxy) benzene is a novel m-phenylenediamine coupler and oxidative dye compositions containing same. Stronger dyeing intensity is afforded by use of the novel coupler of the invention.
