  • Patent number: 8283641
Abstract: A positioning device and a particle beam apparatus including a positioning device ensure reliable positioning of a holder for holding an object at any working distance. The positioning device includes a positionable holder for holding the object. A light source generates a light beam which is guided in the direction of the positionable holder. A detector detects the light beam. An injection area injects particles of a particle beam such that they are guided in the direction of the positionable holder. The light beam passes the injection area. The injection area has an output side for the light beam and the particle beam, which is directed toward the holder. The detector includes a detector element situated in an area between the output side and the holder. The light source includes a light source element situated in an area which extends away from the holder, starting from the output side.

  • Patent number: 8271207
Abstract: Absolute quantitation of protein in a sample is provided by comparing a sum or average of the N highest ionization intensities observed for peptides of a particular protein along with a calibration standard. The calibration standard can be in the form of a table generated by prior protein peptide analysis performed using one or more pre-determined proteins. The comparison is used to determine a corresponding absolute quantity of protein based on the observed sum or average of ionization intensities. A simple conversion factor can be applied to the calibration standard value to determine the absolute quantity of protein in the sample.

  • Patent number: 8271002
Abstract: A method and device capable of automating registration of a transmission mail address allowed for reception in a white list and reducing a user burden without an input error is provided. From a mobile unit, in respect of registration of a transmission address allowed for reception in a white list of an e-mail server, it becomes possible to eliminate a work of making an operation of inputting list data for updating the white list by utilizing information electronically stored in an address directory, and further, it becomes possible to reliably register the latest data free of an input error as a white list. In addition, the data stored in the white list of the e-mail server is transferred to a mobile terminal device, thereby making it easy to update an address directory due to a device model change.

  • Patent number: 8269503
Abstract: A method of locating a fault on an electrical network energized by a source uses a form of triangulation of voltage measurements at at least three different locations on the network, with at least one of the locations situated upstream from the fault with respect to the source. Voltage phasors corresponding to the voltages measured during the fault are time synchronized. Conductors of the network involved in the fault are determined as a function of characteristics of the voltage phasors and a fault current causing a voltage drop at one of the locations with respect to an initial voltage value is evaluated. A position of the fault is evaluated at a point of the network where a ratio between a difference of the voltages measured at two of the locations and an impedance between one of the two locations and the point is equal to the fault current.

  • Patent number: 8271996
Abstract: Described are techniques for communicating between one or more producers and one or more consumers. A first consumer of an event queue registers for notification regarding occurrences of one or more events. A producer of the event queue posts one or more notifications to one or more consumers of the event queue regarding one or more occurrences of one or more events. Each of the consumers receive notification regarding occurrences of events for which the consumer is registered. The first consumer retrieves posted event notifications regarding events for which the first consumer is registered. If the first consumer is executing in user space and an event notification list to which the event notifications for the first consumer are posted is located in shared memory, the first consumer retrieves the posted event notifications without proxying into kernel space.

  • Patent number: 8266453
Abstract: A backup site and a client are coupled to a network and the backup site obtains backup data for the client using a portable storage device by providing a direct coupling between the portable storage device and the backup site. The portable storage device contains full backup data for the client. The direct coupling is separate from the network. Full backup data is uploaded from the portable storage device to the backup site via the direct coupling. At least one incremental backup, based on the prior full backup, is performed to transfer data from the client to the backup site through the network. The network may be the Internet. The direct coupling may be USB, Firewire, or eSATA. Only a subset of data corresponding to a backup dataset may be provided on the portable storage device. Data on the portable storage device may be encrypted.

  • Patent number: 8261029
Abstract: A system for dynamic balancing of writes between multiple storage devices in which Remote Data Facility (RDF) groups may be assigned weights according to a dynamic priority parameter. The dynamic priority parameter provides the ability to control the weight of an asynchronous RDF group compared to that of a synchronous RDF group. Thus, when the same RDF adapter includes a mix of asynchronous RDF groups and synchronous RDF groups, a dynamic balance of the write priorities between the two group types may be obtained.

  • Patent number: 8255611
Abstract: One embodiment of the invention relates to the transfer of content between a host computer that issues OAS access requests and a block I/O storage system. Specifically, a host computer may issue an access request for a content unit that identifies the content unit is an object identifier. The request may be received by a second server, which may determine the block address(es) on the block I/O storage system at which the content unit is stored. A request may then be sent to the block I/O storage system to retrieve the content stored at the requested block address(es) and the block I/O storage system may return the content.

  • Patent number: 8250033
Abstract: A replication process using snapshots to maintain information regarding changes made to a production data set following a point in time. In some embodiments, the production data set may be a file system and the snapshot may store information relating to changes made to both previously-allocated and newly-allocated data blocks. When a change is made to a previously-allocated data block, the original contents for the data block may be copied to a save volume prior to being overwritten by the new data, while for a newly-allocated data block no data may be copied to the save volume. An entry may also be created in a map identifying each changed data block. A replication process may then read the block map to identify data blocks storing new data to should be replicated to a replication data set, such that the replication data set remains a copy of the production data set.

  • Patent number: 8250257
Abstract: Described are techniques for performing I/O operations. A graph is received including a plurality of nodes and edges. The graph includes a first level with a root node and one or more other levels of nodes. Each edge has a value indicating an I/O load metric. A thread associated with a first node determines whether to perform a background I/O operation directed to a first device and having a first priority. The first priority is compared to a first value of an I/O load metric. The first value is determined in accordance with criteria including a maximum usage of an I/O buffer of the first device and priorities of other I/O operations directed to the first device. If it is determined that the background I/O operation is to be performed, the background I/O operation is forwarded for processing on an I/O path having a corresponding path in the graph.

  • Patent number: 8250035
Abstract: Embodiments of the invention relate to maintaining reference counts in a file system to track when a block is available to be freed. When a snapshot copy of a file is created, rather than copying all the blocks of the file for the snapshot copy, the snapshot inode is given pointers to the blocks of the file. Rather than updating the reference counts for all these blocks to indicate that they are now in use by more than one file, the update of reference counts for at least some of these blocks may be deferred until a later time.

  • Patent number: 8247785
Abstract: A particle beam device includes a movable carrier element with at least one receiving element for receiving a specimen and in which the receiving element is situated on the carrier element. In various embodiments, the receiving element may be situated removably on the carrier element and/or multiple receiving elements may be situated on the carrier element in such a way that a movement of the carrier element causes a movement of the multiple receiving elements in the same spatial direction or around the same axis. The carrier element may be movable in three spatial directions situated perpendicular to one another and rotatable around a first axis which is parallel to an optical axis of the particle beam device and around a second axis which is situated perpendicular to the optical axis. A method for using the particle beam device in connection with specimen study and preparation is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 8244792
Abstract: An apparatus and method for information recovery quality assessment in a computing environment is disclosed. This includes a group of inter-related software modules and associated data structures that analyze and assess the recoverability of the network data through the data protection configuration setup and a previously performed data protection process. It examines in a comprehensive manner the recoverability perspective across a pre-defined data protection domain, such as a computer network with an organization. The results of the examination provide for the display of inconsistencies of data protection configuration and previously performed data protection processes that consequently result in problems of recovering the network objects in an appropriate manner.
