  • Patent number: 8093556
Abstract: A device and method for analyzing a sample, in particular a sample which contains low-density materials, is provided. Ions of a predefined mass and/or a predefined elementary charge are selected from a plurality of ions. The selected ions are directed onto the sample for sample preparation. An electron beam is then directed onto the prepared sample and a spatial distribution of scattered electrons is measured.

  • Patent number: 8094768
Abstract: The present invention discloses a novel multi-channel timing recovery scheme that utilizes a shared CORDIC to accurately compute the phase for each tone. Then a hardware-based linear combiner module is used to reconstruct the best phase estimate from multiple phase measurements. The firmware monitors the noise variance for the pilot tones and determines the corresponding weight for each tone to ensure that the minimum phase jitter noise is achieved through the linear combiner. Then a hardware-based second-order timing recovery control loop generates the frequency reference signal for VCXO or DCXO. A single sequentially controlled multiplier is used for all multiplications in the control loop.

  • Patent number: 8085715
Abstract: A mobile telecommunications network includes a radio access network comprising base stations and one or more additional access points. An access point is connected to a network core by an IP transport broadband connection. The access point is configured to appear to the mobile terminal as a conventional base station—that is, for example, it communicates with the mobile terminal using GSM or UMTS transport protocols and does not require any modification to a standard GSM or UMTS mobile terminal. Access Points may not be under the direct control of the network provider, and so are more susceptible to security threats. The described system allows the network provider to verify that the access point through which a mobile terminal is about to communicate is a legitimate and trusted base station and/or is at a particular location. Differential charging may be performed in dependence upon a subscriber's location.

  • Patent number: 8085794
Abstract: Described are techniques for determining a set of routing information for a plurality of components performing routing in a network. Destinations that are directly connected to each of the plurality of components are determined. Each of the plurality of components is associated with one of a plurality of routing tables. Each of the plurality of routing tables stores routing information in accordance with destinations in the network. Cost information is stored in the plurality of routing tables for each destination directly connected to one of the plurality of components. For each of the plurality of components, a set of neighboring components is determined. For each neighboring component, routing information for a destination is adopted from the routing table of said each neighboring component in accordance with an adoption rule. Processing is repeatedly performed until the routing tables have not been modified.

  • Patent number: 8082397
Abstract: Described are techniques and criteria used in connection with cache management. The cache may be organized as a plurality of memory banks in which each memory bank includes a plurality of slots. Each memory bank has an associated control slot that includes groups of extents of tags. Each cache slot has a corresponding tag that includes a bit value indicating the availability of the associated cache slot, and a time stamp indicating the last time the data in the slot was used. The cache may be shared by multiple processors. Exclusive access of the cache slots is implemented using an atomic compare and swap instruction. The time stamp of slots in the cache may be adjusted to indicate ages of slots affecting the amount of time a particular portion of data remains in the cache. Each director may obtain a cache slot from a private stack of nondata cache slots in addition to accessing a shared cache used by all directors.

  • Patent number: 8082390
Abstract: Described are techniques for representing and using RAID group consistency information. RAID group consistency information for a slice of data included on a device may be obtained by mapping the slice to an index. The index is one of a plurality of indices each associated with a structure indicating RAID group inconsistencies for a different portion of slices of data of the device. If the index is not associated with a structure, it may be determined that there is no RAID group inconsistency for the slice. If the index is associated with a structure, a hint bit associated with the slice may be determined wherein the hint bit encodes summary consistency information for a plurality of slices. A determination is made as to whether the hint bit is set, and, if the hint bit is not set, it is determined that there is no RAID group inconsistency for the slice.

  • Patent number: 8078813
Abstract: Storing recovery data includes providing chunks of data to a remote destination, where each chunk of data represents data written before a first time and after a second time and where the second time for one of the particular chunks corresponds to a first time for a subsequent one of the particular chunks, providing synchronous data to a local destination, and providing an indicator to the local destination in connection with creation of a new chunk of data for storage at the remote destination. The local destination may maintain a plurality of maps, where each of the maps associates synchronous data being provided thereto with a specific chunk of data. In response to receiving an indicator in connection with creation of a new chunk of data, the local destination may point to a new map. There may be two maps or more than two maps.

  • Patent number: 8070659
Abstract: The present invention generally relates to an orthopedic exerciser and its actuating mechanism which, more specifically, are used for therapy, post-surgery rehabilitation or healing of a knee, of a joint, or the muscles of a leg or any other body member. Such exercisers usually allow a combination of exercises that help in the recovery of the joint, but to minimize the chances of further injuring the body part and therefore increase the recovery process, the exerciser must submit the body part to a controlled level of force. The orthopedic exerciser of the present invention includes an actuating mechanism cooperating with a resistance assembly which provides resistance and/or assistance along different directions of movement of the actuating mechanism.

  • Patent number: 8074085
Abstract: A system and method for controlling power supply of a power source to at least one power consumer to a desired value in the range of from 0 and 100% in which the operating time of the power consumer is divided up into periods and the power output by the power source is switched on within one period only during the duty cycle which is the portion of the period length that corresponds to the desired value. Resolution provided by the present system and method is improved over known techniques for the static division of the period into equally long periods, especially in the control of light modules having low intensities. The present system and method includes the feature in which the period length is divided up into a number of blocks, every block having at least one switch segment in which the switching state can be modified, and at least one static segment in which the switching state cannot be modified.

  • Patent number: 8069310
Abstract: Data units are prefetched into a cache memory by executing a first prefetch task to prefetch a first prefetch series of data units from off-cache. A first prefetch operation is executed to prefetch and store a first selected set of data units. Decisions are made about the first prefetch task, subsequent prefetch operations and prefetch tasks based on in-cache data units associated with the first prefetch task and on other data units that are read from off-cache but that are not associated with the first prefetch task. A determination is made whether an additional data unit that is read from an off-cache logical location is a first prefetch series member. If so, it is associated with the first prefetch task, and, for decision making, is treated as having been prefetched into cache in accordance with the first prefetch task.
