  • Patent number: 4450677
Abstract: A bearing rail is provided extending along each side of the draw frame and spaced laterally from the outer edges of the double upper rollers. At the end of the each rail, in the area when the thread exits from the exit rollers, each rail is provided with two carriers, one of which is provided with a light source and the other which with a light receiving photo-cell. The light source on one side of the drawing frame is arranged in association with the thread being drawn adjacent the photo-cell on the other side so that the light source causes this remote thread to cast a shadow on the photo-cell adjacent to it. Similarly the light source on the other side, the thread remote from it and the photo-cell opposite it are also aligned. The shadow on each photo-cell produces an alternating current which is then independently fed to a circuit and switch means, housed at the inlet end of the bearing rail.

  • Patent number: 4449575
Abstract: A heat exchanger for high temperature operation has a ceramic-walled chamber traversed by ceramic tubes and is capable of use inter alia in fluidised bed applications. The tubes are arranged in series of successive banks and to give a compact arrangement the successive banks of tubes at different levels are disposed transversely to each other. The tubes may have internal and external reinforcing means to allow them to withstand the loads imposed by the fluidised bed and generally to allow longer tubes to be used in ceramic constructions. The internal reinforcing means may also provide restrictions that in fluidised bed applications can function to minimise the effects of tube wall fracture by reducing carry-over of bed particles seeping into the tubes. For improved end sealing, means can be provided to hold resilient ceramic seals compressed against the tube ends while permitting axial thermal movement of the tubes.

  • Patent number: 4438706
Abstract: Material is comletely atomized, and converted into a plasma state by directing the feeding of the burner so that the material to be decomposed and an oxidizing agent (oxygen, air, etc.,) are in a suitable ratio at every point of the equipment so that the waste transforms in stable combustion products. There is no need for a catalyst or for any other subsidiary materials. The recovery of certain end products as chemical basic materials is also effected. The oxidizing agent may be air, air enriched with oxygen or oxygen. Plasma can be produced from air, or from the waste, itself. With waste materials containing halogens, it is advisable to introduce water into the plasma to promote the formation of hydrogen halogenids. A MHD generators or conventional heat exchangers may be used and the final gases are to be desacidified before letting them outdoors by treatng them with a weak alkaline washing solution.

  • Patent number: 4439588
Abstract: The invention relates to polymers and copolymers of pivaloyloxyalkyl methacrylates which contain structural units of the general formula ##STR1## where R.sup.1 is (CH.sub.2).sub.n.sbsb.1 --O (n.sub.1 =2 to 10) or (CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --O).sub.n.sbsb.2 (n.sub.2 =1 to 4) and to the method of their preparation and modification. The polymerization and copolymerization can be initiated by free-radical initiators of the peroxy type or by anionic initiators, e.g., alkali metal alkoxides or butyllithium, and carried out in a solution, bulk or suspension process in the presence of a crosslinking agent or without it. Anionic polymerization may result in stereoregular polymers or may be used for preparation of block copolymers by the "living" polymer technique. The polymers and copolymers can be modified by the partial or total conversion of the pivaloyloxyalkyl methacrylate units into hydroxyalkyl methacrylate units by selective hydrolysis, alcoholysis or other reaction.
