  • Patent number: 4549349
Abstract: A pair of cutter blades is provided for cutting sheet metal in flat tubular form. The blades are pivotally connected together in scissors-fashion so as to be capable of relative movement between each other. At least one of the blades is formed with a cutting edge comprising a piercing point or region having on each side portions which trail the leading extremity of the piercing point or region considered in the direction of cutting, whereby in operation after initial piercing of the metal to be cut, and on continued cutting, the incision made by the piercing point or region increases away from the pierced region towards the sides of the material being cut. The blades may be operated by means of a piston and cylinder device driving a pair of links connecting the piston to the two blades at positions off-set from the pivotal axis of the two blades.

  • Patent number: 4549193
Abstract: The invention provides a new structure for a subsurface junction field effect transistor (SJFET) and a new process for its fabrication, the process being especially compatible with existing processes for the fabrication of bipolar devices. Spaced zones of p.sup.+ type are diffused into an n-type epitaxial layer to terminate the channel and connect to source and drain terminals. Spaced zones of n.sup.+ type are diffused into the epitaxial layer to define the channel width. The corresponding zones for the bipolar device can be formed at the same time. A passivating layer of silicon dioxide is applied and the subsurface p-type channel formed by ion implantation to leave a thin n-type layer between the channel and the silicon dioxide layer. Upon application of a metal layer over the silicon dioxide layer in the neighborhood of the channel, and its connection to the back gate terminal, a stable electron accumulation layer forms at the surface of the n-type layer which interfaces with the silicon dioxide layer.

  • Patent number: 4547988
Abstract: In a firearm with a cylinder bolt mechanism, a locking chamber (27) is arranged in a space in the barrel between the rear end of the barrel and the rear end of the cartridge chamber for a bolt tip (28) on the bolt. Behind the locking chamber in the barrel is arranged a separate locking ring (23) between a stop (25) in the receiver and the rear end of the barrel. The locking ring is provided with lugs and grooves, and the bolt head is provided with corresponding claws which are able to pass through the grooves in the locking ring and to be rotated into the locked position ahead of the lugs in the ring. By introducing the bolt complete with the bolt head into the barrel and locking it securely in this position, it is possible to achieve greater accuracy because the bolt head acts as a stiffening connection between the barrel and the receiver, so that these components of the firearm are unable to move relative to each other as the result of oscillations in the barrel when the cartridge detonates.

  • Patent number: 4546873
Abstract: The specification discloses an article retention system for transfrer equipment, particularly transfer equipment for carrying can ends to a series of stations to produce an easy-opening end. The can ends are supported by an indexing belt and contact means in the form of spring steel strips and are arranged in overlying and contacting relationship with the can ends supported by the belt. A contacting force of between 200 to 500 grams is sufficient to retain the can ends in a predetermined orientation such that the ends are accurately presented to each station. In an alternative embodiment a fixed rail overlies the edges of the can ends and spring loaded rollers engage the indexing belt to force the can ends into engagement with the rails to maintain the orientation in a manner similar to the above.
