  • Patent number: 4521894
Abstract: A digital system for monitoring the rotational speed of a rotating body, such as a turbine shaft, in order to indicate an overspeed or underspeed condition, features a readily variable reference speed limit. A reference pulse train is generated. The number of pulses from the reference pulse train is counted for a predetermined period of time proportional to a fixed number of rotations of the rotating body, and the resulting count is compared to a fixed reference count. The reference speed limit is adjusted by variation of the frequency of the reference pulse train.

  • Patent number: 4519350
Abstract: A dual induction type intake system for an internal combustion engine has a primary intake passageway for light load operation of the engine and a secondary intake passageway for heavy load operation of the engine. The downstream side open end of each intake passageway opens toward the intake port of the cylinder of the engine. The secondary intake passageway is provided with a controllable valve therein. The load on the engine is detected and the controllable valve is opened when the load on the engine is heavier than a predetermined value so that the intake gas is introduced into the combustion chamber through both the primary and secondary intake passageways, while otherwise the controllable valve is closed so that the intake gas is introduced into the combustion chamber only through the primary intake passageway.

  • Patent number: 4517304
Abstract: Antigens specific to respiratory syncytial virus are produced on the surface of cells by:(1) culturing in vitro cells derived from a human or animal mucosa,(2) inoculating the cultured cells with respiratory syncytial virus, and(3) selecting virally infected cells from the culture. The resulting cells or the viral antigen(s) when partially or completely isolated from the cells have immunological and diagnostic uses in respect of infection by respiratory syncytial virus and may be used to isolate viral antibodies. A specific cell strain NM7 produced by this method from bovine nasal mucosal cells has respiratory syncytial virus antigens on its surface and its corresponding, uninfected cell strain NM5 can be infected similarly.

  • Patent number: 4517520
Abstract: In converting a staircase waveform signal into a smoothed analog signal, this circuit can perform the high-quality conversion without any sophisticated lowpass filter. An input staircase signal is delayed for one stepping interval to produce a differential signal which represents a stepping height at each step, by taking the difference between the input staircase signal and the one stepping interval delayed version thereof. The differential signal is integrated at every stepping interval. The integrated voltage forms a sawtooth wave signal which is in turn additively combined with the one stepping interval delayed version of the input staircase signal. The resulted combined signal is a smoothed signal of the input staircase signal.

  • Patent number: 4516306
Abstract: A semi-automated plant for threading pipe, including oil and gas well casing and tubing, is disclosed. A particular sequencing of equipment activation and movement is utilized in order to have normal operations of the plant, from loading of unthreaded pipe to the unloading of pipe having threads on each end, and a coupling applied to at least one of the ends, performed without requiring manual handling of the pipe. One particularly important portion of the apparatus in the plant is the lifting device for raising the pipe to the height which is proper for the threading machine, or lathe, and a clamping device for clamping the pipe during the threading operation. By use of the disclosed apparatus, the pipe is accurately raised to the proper height, and pipe over a considerable range of size can be securely clamped during the threading operation.
