  • Patent number: 4688559
Abstract: The modular components of an orthopedic leg brace assembly are secured together around a flexible cable arrangement and the components are removable so that they may be dissambled for repair or for replacement with longer components to accommodate for a user's growth. The components inlcude an ankle-foot orthosis and upwardly extending side braces of stanchion form with an upper securing strap arrangement for securely surrounding a user's lower leg, a second pair of side braces of stanchion form with an upper securing strap arrangement for securely surrounding a user's thigh, and knee joint assemblies joining the ends of the braces to simulate the normal action of a user's knee during flexion and extension of the leg. The flexible cable arrangement allows the user to rigidly hold the entire unit in aligned, fixed relation when the leg is extended.

  • Patent number: 4687929
Abstract: A monodisperse aerosol generator forms a stable jet of liquid at a velocity allowing columnar breakup into droplets of uniform size and spacing. To prevent degradation of the monodisperse aerosol, it is dispersed by entrainment in a high velocity gaseous stream. To provide an interface for direct injection into a mass spectrometer or to interface a liquid chromatograph with a mass spectrometer, the generator is followed by a desolvation chamber operating at about atmospheric pressure and a multistage pressure reducer which evacuates solvent vapor and gaseous medium to form a high momentum, solvent-depleted solute aerosol beam which is input into the mass spectrometer.

  • Patent number: 4667141
Abstract: A hand truck type of device provides a portable jumper battery for motor vehicles. Battery cables which connector clips are stored in the truck as is a power cable for connection to a power outlet so that the jumper battery may be recharged by a charger carried by the hand truck. Electronic circuitry connected to the cables prevents connection to the jumper battery until the connector clips have been properly connected and the vehicle battery has sufficient charge to be sensed. The sensing actuates a periodic signal and permits the system to be turned on. A token responsive switch controls a cycle timer which allows the circuitry to complete the connection to the vehicle battery.

  • Patent number: 4665845
Abstract: The head of a tufting machine frame journals a plurality of transversely spaced push rods, the lower end of which carries a needle bar and its needles. The upper end of each push rod has an individual drive assembly which includes a sidewise extending drive pin pivotally connected to a connecting rod reciprocated by an eccentrically mounted pivot pin protruding from the face of a crank member which is removeably mounted on a driven wheel carried by a stub shaft. A timing belt, connected over the driven sprocket, is itself driven by one of a plurality of drive wheels on a main drive shaft.

  • Patent number: 4661010
Abstract: An improved concrete block intended to serve as a roadway defining member. The block is in the shape of an elongate concrete body having an essentially triangular cross-sectional configuration with one bottom face and two preferably symmetrical side faces. Each side face is formed closest to the bottom face with a straight threshold portion sloping at a gradient of 1:5, which portion is connected to a second straight portion sloping at a gradient of 1:7 via an essentially circularly arcuate concave portion.

  • Patent number: 4660038
Abstract: An apparatus and method are disclosed which employ the Doppler principle to measure the terminal velocity and, hence, the size distribution of hydrometeors such as raindrops and hailstones. The apparatus of the present invention employs a ground-based, upwardly directed, low power, 10.525 GHz homodyne continuous wave radar module to transmit microwave signals to falling hydrometeors within the size range of 0.5 mm through 4.0 cm, to record the frequency distribution and power spectrum of the reflected signals, and to process these data with "terminal velocity"-to-"hydrometeor diameter" calibration data to generate information on the hydrometeor size distribution in the precipitation under observation. The disclosed method permits a user of the apparatus to select the Doppler velocity threshold above which data are recorded for processing with a Fast Fourier Transform technique to determine hydrometer velocity values.
