  • Patent number: 8175261
Abstract: An echo canceller comprises foreground and background filters. The background filter locates and confirms peaks, defines active regions centered about the confirmed peaks and updates coefficients of the foreground filter when the background filter is more effective than the foreground filter. A method for improved adaptive echo cancellation comprises configuring a foreground filter, calculating an echo-return loss responsive to the foreground filter, identifying the location of one or more peaks repetitively in a block of data in a background filter, confirming one or more identified peaks over a defined number of blocks before defining an active region equally about the identified peaks in the background filter, filtering the sparse impulse response responsive to the active regions, calculating an echo-return loss responsive to the background filter, and updating the foreground filter when the background filter includes a more effective set of filter coefficients.

  • Patent number: 8174363
Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention provide RFID systems having a centralized frequency source and controller. The centralized frequency source generates a reference signal, having a frequency below the RF band of interest, which is transmitted to a plurality of reader nodes. The centralized controller generates and transmits data to the plurality of reader nodes. At each reader node, the reference signal is converted to an RF carrier signal that is modulated and transmitted within corresponding read field of the reader node. This modulated RF carrier signal may interrogate and communicate with one or more RFID tags within this read field. The RF carrier signal may also be held constant to enable communication from RFID tags to the reader node, which is subsequently transmitted back to the centralized controller or processor.

  • Patent number: 8165219
Abstract: Described systems and methods allow a reduction in the memory bandwidth required in video coding (decoding/encoding) applications. According to a first aspect, the data assigned to each memory word is chosen to correspond to a 2D subarray of a larger array such as a macroblock. An array memory word organization allows reducing both the average and worst-case bandwidth required to retrieve predictions from memory in video coding applications, particularly for memory word sizes (memory bus widths) larger than the size of typical predictions. According to a second aspect, two or more 2D subarrays such as video predictions are retrieved from memory simultaneously as part of a larger 2D array, if retrieving the larger array requires fewer clock cycles than retrieving the subarrays individually. Allowing the combination of multiple predictions in one memory access operation can lead to a reduction in the average bandwidth required to retrieve predictions from memory.

  • Patent number: 8165017
Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention provide a GMPLS fast re-route of packets within a network using a multicast address and a table comprising a list of alias IP addresses. According to various embodiments of the invention an alternate data path from a source node to a destination node allows a packet to traverse to the destination node without IP forwarding techniques being applied. In other words, a tunneling effect from a source node to a destination node allows other nodes in the network to ignore the packet and only read the multicast address within the header and immediately forward the packet to the destination node. A predetermined set of IP addresses are determined from network topology including all potential paths, for a packet to traverse, to a destination address.

  • Patent number: 8149909
Abstract: In some embodiments, macroblock-level encoding parameters are assigned to weighted Linear combinations of corresponding content-category-level encoding parameters. A macroblock quantization parameter (QP) modulation is set to a weighted linear combination of content category QP modulations. Content categories may identify potentially overlapping content types. The combination weights may be similarity measures describing macroblock similarities to content categories. A macroblock may be associated with multiple content categories, with different similarity levels for different content categories. A similarity measure for a given macroblock with respect to a content category may be defined as a number (between 0 and 8) of neighboring macroblocks that meet a similarity condition, provided the macroblock meets a qualification condition. The similarity condition may be computationally simpler than the qualification condition. Content-category-level statistics are generated by combining block-level statistics.

  • Patent number: 8124916
Abstract: Apparatus and methods that minimize surface defect development in silicon wafers during thermal processing at relatively high temperatures at which silicon wafers are annealed and at less extreme temperature, or for other purposes. The apparatus and methods have utility to horizontally-disposed furnaces for silicon wafers and to vertically-oriented furnaces in which larger wafers can be thermally processed. A selectively-sealable process tube encloses silicon wafers during heating of the silicon wafers to a predetermined temperature, and a heating atmosphere supply system induces through the process tube a positive flow of a process gas, such as hydrogen or argon, that is non-reactive with solid silicon at the predetermined temperature. A process tube outlet vents gas from the process tube, and an impurity sensor in the process tube outlet detects oxygen and moisture in the vented gas to verify the purity of the atmosphere surrounding the wafers during thermal processing.

  • Patent number: 8098788
Abstract: An apparatus that includes a module for controlling the frequency of a voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) as part of a phase locked loop (PLL), or clock and data recovery (CDR) when an input reference signal to the PLL or serial data to the CDR has ceased from being received. In particular, the apparatus comprises a VCO adapted to generate a VCO clock signal, a first control module adapted to control the frequency of the VCO clock signal based on the input reference signal, and a second control module adapted to control the frequency of the VCO clock signal in response to an absence of the input reference signal. By controlling the frequency of the VCO clock signal during an absence of the input reference signal, the first control module is able to more easily re-acquire control the frequency of the VCO clock signal when the input reference signal is received again.

  • Patent number: 8098602
Abstract: A data transmission technique where high speed data is transmitted differentially in a forward channel by way of a serial link, and relatively low speed data is differentially modulated onto the forward channel signal for transmission in a reverse channel via the link. By utilizing differential modulation in both forward and reverse channels, the resulting signal has a common mode voltage that is substantially constant, resulting in low EMI. The spectral content of the signal associated with the high speed data may be substantially non-overlapping with the spectral content of the signal associated with the low speed data. This facilitates the recovery of the high speed data and low speed data with minimal interference. The differential signaling lends itself for communicating data via an inexpensive medium, such as twisted wire pair or parallel PCB traces. The data transmission technique applies to various communication network topologies: point-to-point, daisy-chain, and point-to-multiple points.

  • Patent number: 8081682
Abstract: In some embodiments, encoding modes for a video image block are enabled according to similarity measures of the block with respect to multiple content categories. Content categories may identify potentially overlapping content types such as sky, water, grass, skin, and red content. In a priority mode, the encoding modes specified by a priority content category (e.g. a red category) are selectively enabled for the block, regardless of the block's similarity to other (non-priority) content categories, provided the block is sufficiently similar to the priority category. In a dominant mode, the encoding modes enabled by a maximum-similarity content category are enabled for the block. In an all-inclusive mode, any mode enabled by any sufficiently-similar content category is enabled for the block. Enabled encoding modes may be further evaluated for selection for the block. Encoding modes may include inter/intra modes, macroblock partition sizes, and intra-prediction directions.

  • Patent number: 8081091
Abstract: A secure key scanning functionality drives the row lines and column lines of a key switch array with randomized pulses of different polarities, and drives signals in one direction from a row line through a pressed key and to a column line as well as in an opposite direction from the column line through the pressed key and to the row line. To make unauthorized detecting of key presses more difficult, row lines and column lines are driven with pulses that appear as actual key press conditions when in fact the pulses are dummy pulses and no corresponding key has been pressed. In one novel aspect, dummy pulses are generated so that the line being driven with the dummy pulses has the same sustained and consistent waveform as the intersecting row and column lines that have identical waveforms due to the actual key press.
