  • Patent number: 5080937
Abstract: Pinhole and blister formation during autodeposition coating of active metal objects, particularly galvanized steel, other zinciferous surfaces, and even ordinary steel that has been abraded, scratched, or otherwise strained, can be greatly reduced by exposing the active metal surfaces to a solution containing cystine before using a autodeposition process itself, or by adding cystine to an otherwise conventional autodeposition composition.

  • Patent number: 5069817
Abstract: A process for the production of alkyl polyoxyethylenes showing improved low-temperature behavior, by reaction of alcohols with ethylene oxide at elevated temperature in the presence of basic alkali metal compounds as catalysts and subsequent neutralization of the alkaline catalyst with acids, which under prior art practice was impractical because of clogging of reaction vessels and equipment associated with precipitation of salts during neutralization, is made practical by adding a finely divided solid to serve as a precipitation control agent during neutralization. The finely divided solids used are, in particular, organic and/or inorganic materials known in the prior art as filter aids, such as kieselguhr and sawdust or other finely divided cellulose.

  • Patent number: 5064512
Abstract: Substituted diphenols, phenyl ethers containing two oxygen atoms attached to a benzene nucleus, and naphthols are more practically effective than previously known additives in stabilizing tin (II) salts, in electrolyte solutions useful for coloring anodized aluminum by electrolysis therein, against oxidation to tin(IV) by reaction with ambient oxygen. Preferred additives include 2-tert-butyl-1,4-dihydroxybenzene, methylhydroquinone, trimethylhydroquinone, 4-hydroxynaphthalene-2,7-disulfonic acid, and p-hydroxyanisole. If p-toluenesulfonic acid or napthalene sulfonic acid are also used in the electrolyte, the throwing power can be greatly improved.

  • Patent number: 5039496
Abstract: Prior art processes for removal of one or more contaminant elements, including at least one of antimony, bismuth, and arsenic and optionally including iron, from electrolyte solutions of primary metals by solvent extraction with an organic phase including a hydroxamic acid, then precipitating at least part of the contaminant elements from the organic phase as sulfides, are improved by an additional step of re-extracting the organic phase with water before precipitating the sulfides from it. At least part of any arsenic present and, if desired, part of any antimony as well, may be re-extracted in this manner and subsequently recovered if desired, so that the overall process is made more economical.
