  • Patent number: 4745371
Abstract: A phase-locked digital synthesizer comprises a voltage-controlled oscillator (6) supplying a frequency divider (7) the output of which is fed to a phase-sensitive detector (9) also receiving an input from a reference oscillator (10). The output of the detector (9) is fed back by a feedback loop to the voltage-controlled oscillator (6) to achieve phase-locking. The divider (7) receives an input from a logic circuit (8) to control the division ratio of the divider (7), the logic circuit being prompted by a control signal which is also used to select one of a plurality of loop filters (12,13) connected for selectable use in the feedback loop from the detector (9) to the voltage controlled oscillator (6), the selected loop filter being appropriate to the prompted division ratio. Other embodiments include compensating means to correct a loop phase error arising from a change in the division ratio.

  • Patent number: 4743654
Abstract: Clear, transparent, single phase blends of polycarbonate and a polyalkyl methacrylate in which the alkyl radical contains from 1 to about 10 carbon atoms, and in which the polycarbonate and the polyalkyl methacrylate are miscible in all proportions are obtained. Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) is the preferred polyalkyl methacrylate. These blends may be prepared by dissolving the two polymers in a mutual solvent having a boiling point of at least about 30.degree. C. and evaporating the solvent at a temperature of from about 30.degree. C. to the boiling point of the solvent. The preferred evaporation temperatures are from about 45.degree. C. to the boiling point of the solvent. This is in contrast to presently known PC/PMMA blends, which are miscible only when the content is nearly all PC or nearly all PMMA. Preferred blends according to this invention contain from 10 to 80 percent by weight of PC and conversely 90 to 20 percent by weight of PMMA. The single phase blends are moldable and transparent.

  • Patent number: 4732002
Abstract: A servo-assisted master cylinder assembly for a vehicle hydraulic braking system has a tandem master cylinder with primary and secondary pistons operative to pressurise primary and secondary pressure spaces for primary and secondary brake circuits. A servo chamber is defined behind the primary piston, and pressurisation of the servo chamber from a source of pressure fluid is controlled by a valve in response to an input force applied to the primary piston. The valve comprises a spool operated solely by pressure in the primary space and a bias force from servo pressure in a bias chamber and a spring. The secondary piston has a smaller effective area than the primary piston, so that the pistons are in abutment in their retracted positions. To reduce pedal travel, one of the brakes of the primary circuit can be supplied from the servo chamber instead of the primary pressure space.

  • Patent number: 4728698
Abstract: Novel self-reinforced polymer composites of a base polymer with a melt processable liquid crystal polymer are prepared according to this invention. The base polymer is a flexible chain polymer, e.g. a conventional thermoplastic. Polycarbonate is a particularly suitable base polymer. The liquid crystal polymer is melt processable, that is, it has a melting point and exhibits anisotropic properties in the melt phase. Wholly aromatic copolyesters are particularly suitable. Mixing is carried out at a temperature at which both the base polymer and the liquid crystal are melt processable, i.e., at a temperature at which the base polymer flows readily and the liquid crystal polymer is above its melting point. The products of this invention comprise about 2 to 20 percent by weight of liquid crystal polymer, which is in the form of essentially unidirectionally oriented continuous fibers primarily in the range of about 1 to 10 micrometers in diameter, distributed in a matrix of the base polymer.
