    Abstract: A detector device used in an imaging system includes a photodiode array that is positioned to detect radiation transmitted by the imaging system. A switch array is connected to the photodiode array. The switch array has an output and comprises switch banks having switches. A control logic circuit is connected to the switch array and controls the state of the switches in the switch banks based on a predefined switching configuration. The control logic circuit also includes a memory device programmed to store the predefined switching configurations. The predefined switching configurations represent respective operational modes of the imaging system wherein each respective operational mode has a respective predetermined detector slice thickness.

    Abstract: A method for characterizing the parameters of a normally occurring turbine exhaust gas temperature profile is provided. From that characterization the characteristics of a filter function to eliminate or significantly reduce the strength of aliased signals from that normally occurring pattern are established. Sensors to provide filtering functions for that purpose include a distributed gradient thermocouple system and a resistance thermometer system. Examples of such sensor systems are disclosed. The method and related sensors improve the detection limits associated with exhaust gas temperature profiles used to monitor, diagnose, and control gas turbines.

    Abstract: A method and an apparatus for perfusion imaging using coded excitation. Bursting pulses are scanned over the region of interest in one or more frames followed by scanning one or more encoded imaging pulses in each subsequent frame. The bursting pulse is intended to break contrast micro-bubbles within a transmit focal zone and therefore should have high mechanical index and low frequency. The basic concept is to use a very low-amplitude encoded pulse train to image the contrast agents. The low amplitude prevents the contrast bubbles in the transmit focal zone from being destroyed while imaging, and the coded excitation provides the necessary signal-to-noise ratio. The imaging pulses are transmitted during refilling of the transmit focal zone with contrast agent subsequent to transmission of the bursting pulse into the transmit focal zone. On receive, the receive vectors are decoded to form a compressed pulse.

An electrode for forming the curved turbulator configuration in the radial cooling passage includes a leading face having a curved turbulator pattern, a trailing face having a complementary curved turbulator pattern, a conductive core, and an insulating coating disposed thereon that is partly removed.

    Abstract: A method and structure for reducing mechanical shear stresses induced in an IC chip by metal interconnect lines that interconnect the chip with its surrounding substrate. A dielectric layer overlies at least a portion of the substrate and a peripheral surface region of the chip. The lines are formed on the dielectric layer and are electrically interconnected with contact pads on the peripheral surface region of the chip, i.e., beneath the dielectric layer. At least one trench is formed in the dielectric layer and surrounds the peripheral surface region of the chip. The lines traverse the trench so as to have nonplanar portions within the trench. The trenches and the nonplanar portions of the lines increase the expansion/contraction capability of the dielectric layer and lines in a region sufficiently close to where the lines are interconnected to the contact pads, such that shear stresses at critical points near the line-pad connections are significantly reduced.

    Abstract: An embedded eddy current inspection apparatus includes a substrate having an opening, and a test eddy current coil (“test coil”) affixed to the substrate near the opening. An internally inspected multilayer component structure includes an upper layer, a lower layer, and an eddy current probe embedded between the upper and lower layers. The eddy current probe includes the test coil facing a subject layer selected from the upper and lower layers. A method of inspecting a multilayer component structure includes simultaneously energizing the test coil and a reference eddy current coil (“reference coil”) embedded between the upper and lower layers and facing the subject layer. The reference coil is located in a reference region of the multilayer structure. A test signal from the test coil is compared with a reference signal from the reference coil, to determine whether a flaw is present in the subject layer near the test coil.

    Abstract: Eddy current inspection of a contoured surface of a workpiece is performed by forming a backing piece of flexible, resiliently yieldable material with a contoured exterior surface conforming in shape to the workpiece contoured surface. The backing piece is preferably cast in place so as to conform to the workpiece contoured surface. A flexible eddy current array probe is attached to the contoured exterior surface of the backing piece such that the probe faces the contoured surface of the workpiece to be inspected when the backing piece is disposed adjacent to the workpiece. The backing piece is then expanded volumetrically by inserting at least one shim into a slot in the backing piece to provide sufficient contact pressure between the probe and the workpiece contoured surface to enable the inspection of the workpiece contoured surface to be performed.

    Abstract: A combined acoustic backing and interconnect module for connecting an array of ultrasonic transducer elements to a multiplicity of conductors of a cable utilizes the backing layer volume to extend a high density of interconnections perpendicular to the transducer array surface. The module is made by injecting flowable backfill material into a mold made up of a plurality of spacer plates having aligned channels, with interleaved flexible circuit boards. The backfill material is cured to form a backing layer which supports the flexible circuit boards in mutually parallel relationship. Excess flexible circuit material on one side of the backing layer is cut flush with the front face of the backing layer, leaving exposed ends of the conductive traces on the flexible circuit boards. The module is then laminated to a piezoelectric ceramic layer, and diced. The flexible circuit board conductive traces are aligned with, and electrically connected to, signal electrodes of the transducer elements.
